U.S. Marine Dies in Afghanistan on New Year's Day

U.S. Marine Dies in Afghanistan on New Year's Day

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) reported the death of a Spokane, Washington Marine who died on New Year's Day.

According to DoD, the death of 22-year-old U.S. Marine Sgt. Jacob M. Hess is "under investigation." There are conflicting reports about the cause of death in this incident.

DoD reported that the Marine sergeant died on Jan. 1 "while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province" located in the southern region of Afghanistan along the Pakistan border.

On the day that Sgt. Hess died, the U.S. and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reported that one of its service members had "died as a result of a non-battle related injury in southern Afghanistan."

Although the ISAF report did not mention Sgt. Hess by name, that was the only Jan. 1 death reported by both DoD and the coalition force.

Helmand province is one of the deadliest provinces in Afghanistan for U.S. and coalition forces.

Breitbart News recently reported that U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan reached 2,162 in 2013. Sgt. Hess's is the first American death of 2014 in Afghanistan.

According to DoD, Sgt. Hess "was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 26, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C."

The Pentagon did not immediately answer requests for comment.
