Mass shootings are no more common than they have been in past decades, despite the impression given by the media.
In fact, the high point for mass killings in the U.S. was 1929, according to criminologist Grant Duwe of the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Incidents of mass murder in the U.S. declined from 42 in the 1990s to 26 in the first decade of this century.
The chances of being killed in a mass shooting are about what they are for being struck by lightning.
Until the Newtown horror, the three worst K–12 school shootings ever had taken place in either Britain or Germany.
The below note from Rachel Alexander hits the bull's eye. The decline of a civilization has always been associated with random killing of women and children. It is because of a survival instinct. The women and children are dependents. A society in crisis can not support dependents. Those who are functional producers don't need the dependents, and thus the dependents are eliminated to enhance the survival of the tribe.
This is a very primitive instinct. In modern times we need to find a more intelligent identification of what is killing the tribe. It isn't just women and children now days. In fact many women are functional producers and even warriors. Eliminating the "dead wood" in America will require more discerning tactics that killing women and children.
In functional societies woman and children are cherished and protected. The survival list of the Titanic is a good example. Men would restrain other men who attempted to get on the life boats so there was space for women and children.
When a society is disintegrating women and children are impediments to survival. Crisis reverses the value of women and children.
Imagine the passengers on a ship escaping from a collapsing society. Alarms sound and the Captain orders "abandon ship. Women and children first," is the command. The women and children are lowered to the sea in lifeboats and not a single man joins them. The fog horn blows and the perfectly functional ship sails away, leaving the women and children behind.
This crisis that reverses the perceived value of women and children is not yet upon us, but the primitive instinct is beginning to manifest in less stable minds.

It should come as no surprise
that the rate of mass shootings at schools and in other public places is increasing. The surge has nothing to do with
guns, which have been widely available in the U.S. for years. Gun control laws
have been increasing. Instead, there is a direct correlation between the
increase in violence and the gradual degradation of morals, ethics and
parenting. We are cultivating mental illness in our society.
Parents are increasingly allowing television
and video games to babysit their children, even though both have
become full of
gratuitous violence. A New York
Times study of rampage killers found that six of
them were into violent video games. Research shows that violent video games and television
desensitize people and promote aggressive behavior, despite claims to the contrary. A research scientist at the
University of Michigan found that television was responsible for 10% of
youth violence. Parents today are neglecting their children, and when things
don't go well, rushing to get divorced instead of trying to work things out
first. Children suffer emotionally when their parents fight or split up.
Parents are ignoring their children so much they don't even see the warning
signs that something might be wrong. The New York Times study found that 63 of 100 rampage killers
had made threats of violence before the event.
“We will
keep a close eye on how the investigation into this heinous crime proceeds,
looking for any anomalies or inconsistencies in the official story line, because
we already KNOW that this crisis will be used by this criminal government to begin
the process of disarming the American people."
According to numbers I have seen, gun deaths per capita in the USA are on a multi-decade downtrend. perhaps the Age of Obama will help reverse that?

I personally cannot begin to grasp the grief these families must be going through and the long-term impact it will have on hundreds, if not thousands of people. As a race, we allow this to happen on a daily basis: in Pakistan, Africa, Afganistan, Iraq..wherever.... Our own young come home daily in coffins from foreign countries. When and how do we stop not only incidents like this, but all the incidents that shorten the lives of our young of either gender and bring such grief upon the families of our planet. Not to mention those that DO return with PSTS, missing limbs, lives changed beyond the comprehension of we who have been differently blessed.
