Former Secretary of State Colin Powell uploaded a 60-year-old “selfie” of himself to Facebook on Thursday morning, taken decades before the practice would become a social media phenomenon.

“I was doing selfies 60 years before you Facebook folks. Eat your heart out Ellen!” said the retired general, in reference to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who promotes a “Throwback Thursday” event encouraging people to post old photographs.

The photograph is a simple one, showing Powell simply standing in front of a large bedroom mirror with a neutral expression on his face.

If Powell is dating the photo accurately, it would date to 1954, when the general was 16 years old and about to graduate from Morris High School in the Bronx, New York.

Just two hours after the photo was uploaded it had accumulated over 33,000 Facebook “likes” and 8,000 shares.
