Formed in May 2007, the Institute
for Genome Sciences is part of the University
of Maryland School of Medicine and is on the University of Maryland
Baltimore campus.
Members of the IGS team have helped revolutionize
genomic discoveries in medicine, agriculture, environmental science and
biodefense.
The Institute is led by Claire
M. Fraser Ph.D., a preeminent genome scientist and microbiologist,
and a team of investigators who have been working on the cutting edge of
genomic research for the past 15 years. Members of the IGS team have helped
revolutionize genomic discoveries in medicine, agriculture, environmental
science and biodefense. By applying genomic tools to clinical research, these
investigators are creating new dynamics for understanding individual
differences in our susceptibility to disease, for understanding the role of our
bodies' microorganisms in health and disease, and for exploring new
personalized therapeutics. IGS investigators are also leading the development
of the new field of microbial forensics.
In the years since IGS was created, the institute has become a leading center for major biological initiatives currently underway including the NIH-funded Human Microbiome Project (HMP) and the NIAID-sponsored Genomic Sequencing Center for Infectious Diseases (GSCID).

The human genome is
a complete set of nucleic acid sequences for humans, encoded
as DNA within the
23 chromosome pairs
in cell nuclei and
in a small DNA molecule found within individual mitochondria. These
are usually treated separately as the nuclear genome and the mitochondrial genome.[2] Human genomes include
both protein-coding DNA genes and noncoding DNA. Haploid human
genomes, which are contained in germ cells (the egg and sperm gamete cells
created in the meiosis phase
of sexual reproduction before fertilization)
consist of 3,054,815,472 DNA base pairs (if
X chromosome is used),[3] while
female diploid genomes
(found in somatic
cells) have twice the DNA content. While there are significant
differences among the genomes of human individuals (on the order of 0.1% due
to single-nucleotide variants[4] and
0.6% when considering indels),[5] these
are considerably smaller than the differences between humans and their closest
living relatives, the bonobos and chimpanzees (~1.1% fixed single-nucleotide variants[6] and
4% when including indels).[7] Size
in basepares can vary too: telomeres size
is decreasing
after every duplication of chromosomes and size of centromeres
can be slightly different (which was discovered when those were fully sequenced
in 2022).

Kim left PIH in 2003 to join the World Health Organization (WHO) as an adviser to the director-general. In March 2004, he was appointed as director of WHO's HIV/AIDS department, after having success creating programs to fight the disease at PIH. Kim oversaw all of WHO's work related to HIV/AIDS, focusing on initiatives to help developing countries scale up their treatment, prevention, and care programs. This included an ambitious "3x5 initiative" designed to put three million people in developing countries on AIDS treatment by the end of 2005. The goal was not met until 2007, but according to the WHO, served to push the treatment strategy for AIDS in Africa further and faster than could have otherwise been hoped.[12][13] As of 2012, the program has treated more than 7 million Africans with HIV.
