Founded: 1999

Mission:
To advance women's leadership across sectors, enhancing public perceptions of women's ability to lead and fostering the entry of women into leadership positions, including the presidency of the United States.

Background:
Established in 1999, the
White House Project is based on the belief that women are underrepresented in leadership positions in the U.S. While the nation is considered the birthplace of the women's movement, it ranks fifty-second in the world in women's representation in national legislatures. Only 215 women out of more than twelve thousand people have served in the U.S. Congress, and only six women run Fortune 500 companies even though women account for 60 percent of the workforce. To address the discrepancies, the White House Project conducts media campaigns, research on women's leadership, conferences, and initiatives to spark interest among young women.

Current Programs:
Recent research produced by the White House Project focuses on how voters respond to images and messages of women candidates, how women's authority and leadership are presented on Sunday morning political shows, and ways to attract young women to political careers.

The project's Change the Culture program works within the entertainment industry to encourage dialogue about women's leadership issues and how they are portrayed in the media among producers, studio and network executives, and writers. Each year, the program's Leadership in Media Award recognizes a film, TV movie, or documentary that spotlights the talents and abilities of women leaders.

Recent Successes:
In June, the organization hosted its second annual National Women's Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. More than 120 women leaders attended activities around the theme: "Using Our Power to Create Change." Also at the conference, the project launched the new Visibility Project initiative to better position women experts so they are consulted more frequently by the news media.
Jane Fonda announced the June 2004 National Women's Convention, which will focus on women's topics in the upcoming election.

Web site:
In addition to a review of its programs and activities, the White House Project Web site features a comprehensive list of leadership training programs for young women around the nation. Its GirlZone section provides information about women in politics and leadership, and includes activities for future leaders. The group's research reports are also available on the site.

Funding:
The White House Project receives funds from individual supporters and foundations. Its Web site is sponsored by the
Rockefeller Family Fund.
