High
Inflation and Its Consequences
Inflation,
the general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money, poses
a significant challenge for workers in the USA. It erodes purchasing power
while working and in retirement, meaning that the same amount of money buys
fewer goods and services over time. The government's role in inflation has been
disastrous, often stemming from poor leadership, weak energy polices, never
ending wars, and government regulations which paralyze job creation and
business growth.
For
everyday consumers, high inflation translates to increased costs for essential
items such as groceries, healthcare, insurance,
education, and housing. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced when
examining housing costs, where high demand paired with limited supply due to immigration
policies
can inflate home and rent prices particularly in democrat controlled cities
which hurts teachers and union workers the most. As interest rates rise—often
in response to inflation—mortgages become more expensive, making homeownership
unattainable for most.
Grocery
Manufacturers Association rebrands

GROCERY MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION REBRANDS: The Grocery
Manufacturers Association officially changed its name on Tuesday,
becoming the Consumer Brands Association as part of a broader reinvention
driven by the departure of some of its most prominent members. The trade group
— started in 1908 as the American Specialty Manufacturers
Association — no longer sees itself as representing just food industry
behemoths.
—
“When I met with the leaders of this industry, the issues that were more
food-centric, more beverage-centric, were frankly already handled or should be
handled by” more niche trade groups, such as the American Bakers
Association, the American
Beverage Association and the International Dairy Foods
Association, Geoff Freeman, the trade group’s president and
chief executive, said in an interview on Monday. So the group has given up
lobbying on issues involving specific ingredients. Instead, it’s focused on
issues important to companies whose products are found in the first 15 aisles
of a typical grocery store, such as packaging sustainability, supply chain
issues and pushing the Food and Drug Administration to take on what Freeman
described as “the out-of-control CBD market.”
—
The trade group’s reinvention was born of necessity. The Grocery Manufacturers
Association’s revenues fell by almost half — from $35.7 million to $19.6
million — between 2016 and 2018, as members such as Dean
Foods, Cargill, Mars and Danone
North America left
amid disputes over issues such as salt, sugar and genetically
modified food. The trade group’s revenue last year was even lower — about $16
million — and it spent about $3 million more than what it brought in, according
to the group’s preliminary numbers. “It’s not sustainable,” Freeman said.
“Fortunately, the organization has had healthy reserves. As people say, they
call it a rainy day fund. It’s been raining on this organization, and we had to
tap into that. We want to stop that as quickly as possible.”
—
Freeman has slashed expenses since he was hired away from the American
Gaming Association in 2018, moving the headquarters across the Potomac
from Washington to Rosslyn. Now he’s working to woo back some of the big food
companies that have left in recent years — Kraft Heinz, Campbell Soup Company, Hershey, NestlĂ©, Unilever —
as well as win over new members in the alcohol, household products and personal
care spaces. Beam Suntory, which makes Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark and
Suntory whiskey, is coming on board, and the trade group is pursuing dozens of
other prospects. “You can’t cut your way to success,” Freeman said. “We’re
going to have to grow, and that’s what our focus is on.”
