Report: Support growing for Condoleeza Rice as NFL Commissioner

The past week has been one giant PR and potential legal nightmare for the National Football League. From the release of the Ray Rice video to Adrian Peterson being charged with child abuse—many are questioning what is going on inside the NFL.

At the head of all of it is commissioner Roger Goodell, who’s inconsistent reaction and statements to the various incidents in question have led many fans to lose confidence in his leadership of the most popular sport in the United States.

It’s also led some to look towards others as potential replacements, and according to the Business Insider there is a growing support for former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.

To the outside world that may seem strange, but Rice has long named being commissioner of the NFL as her dream job.

She’s been involved with the game of football for a long time and is a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan.

Many in the political sphere see Rice as a great choice because of her passion for and knowledge of the sport. That includes former chief of staff for President George W. Bush, Karl Rove.

“I think Condi would succeed in any job she had, as she did when she was national security adviser, Secretary of State, Provost of Stanford, etc,” Mr Rove said.

“If it’s a job she wants, with her encyclopedic knowledge of the sport and passion for the game, I have no doubt she’d be great.”

Just how much is she trusted in the game of football? She currently is serving on the inaugural College Football Playoff selection committee.

Her involvement in that committee could be the biggest hurdle to taking over as NFL commissioner, as members of the committee serve at least three-year terms and some will rotate out after the three years are up.

Considering Rice’s stated intentions of someday wanting to become NFL commissioner, it would be interesting to see how she handles balancing her current responsibility in the sport with her “dream job.”

While this could be an interesting choice, most reports indicate that there is zero support from NFL owners to force Goodell out as commissioner. That vote would need to take place before any replacement could even be thought of, and it appears there’s no appetite for change at the top just yet.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt is the chair for the Roosevelt Institute, and an advisory board member for the Wheelchair Foundation.

Mikhail Gorbachev is an advisory board member for the Wheelchair Foundation, was the general secretary for the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and the president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

Don Shula is an advisory board member for the Wheelchair Foundation, was a player for the Cleveland Browns, and a player for the Detroit Lions.
