More than two-thirds of Democrats signed onto a letter Wednesday accusing Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin of "actively hamstringing America's homegrown clean energy industry" under new policies implemented by the Trump administration, reports the Hill.

"While countries around the world are clamoring for cleaner, cheaper, and more innovative technologies, you are actively hamstringing America's homegrown clean energy industry, which has already injected $422 billion and 400,000 jobs into our economy in just the past two and a half years," the bicameral group of legislators wrote.

"This is anything but unleashing American energy. At the same time, instead of lowering costs for American families, your actions will result in the opposite. Americans' medical expenses will increase because your Polluters First agenda will allow particulate matter and other hazardous air pollution to go unchecked," they added.

Zeldin in March announced nearly three dozen deregulation moves that he said would spur the U.S. economy by rolling back rules that have unfairly burdened industry. Many of the moves would affect landmark regulations aimed at protecting clean air and water.

The lawmakers said Zeldin's actions would "needlessly increase American families' exposure to the pollution that can make them sick and stick them with the bill for their care."

The Pentagon this week posted a notice from chief spokesman Sean Parnell to soldiers who were involuntarily dismissed or left on their own while refusing to take the required COVID-19 vaccination. Parnell said, "The door is open."

But since President Donald Trump earlier announced he wanted them back; few are taking the offer.

Military.com reported that the number of soldiers returning to service so far is hardly noticeable. Only about 100 out of about 8,700 affected soldiers have returned since Trump announced in January that they were welcome to rejoin the service.

Part of the issue may be a cumbersome process to verify how much backpay and benefits they lost, balanced against income they have earned since they left the service, to arrive at the amount they'll get on return. The report said, so far, only the Navy has spelled out details of the financial calculations involved in the process.

Trump signed an Executive Order in January setting the stage for the return of unvaccinated military personnel. "The vaccine mandate was an unfair, overbroad, and completely unnecessary burden on our service members. Further, the military unjustly discharged those who refused the vaccine, regardless of the years of service given to our Nation, after failing to grant many of them an exemption that they should have received."

Shares of U.S. health insurers jumped on Tuesday after a bigger-than-expected increase in the government's reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage plans in 2026 signaled some relief for a sector burdened with steep medical costs.

Shares of Medicare-focused insurer Humana led gains with a nearly 15% jump in premarket trading, while other health insurers including UnitedHealth Group, Centene and CVS Health advanced between 5% and 9%.

The 5.06% average increase, roughly double of what was proposed by the government in January, could help profit margins in the sector after a post-COVID surge in demand for medical procedures drove up costs.

The "best-case scenario" rates, coupled with rising tariff risk, make health insurance stocks a strong relative safe haven, Baird Research analysts said in a note to clients.

Some health insurance stocks have performed well despite a recent market rout triggered by escalating worries over a trade war. Centene and Molina Healthcare notched gains last week, when broader markets plunged after President Donald Trump's tariff announcement.

The rate the U.S. government pays to private health insurers to manage Medicare for people aged 65 and older or with disabilities influences the monthly premiums these companies charge, the plan benefits they offer and, ultimately, their profits.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services had earlier proposed a 2.2% increase in 2026 payments. Last year, the government announced a 0.2% decline in the reimbursement rates for 2025.

The agency said the rate change mainly accounts for additional data on rising costs for insurers, including payment data through the fourth quarter of 2024.

Health insurance stocks had a rough 2024 with most companies ending the year in the red due to low government payments, high medical costs and public backlash against the sector after the murder of a UnitedHealth executive.
