America Needs a Trustworthy President - Not a Lawyer

Because neither one of them is a lawyer, that's why!

America Needs a Trustworthy President - Not a Lawyer

There is a paradox at work in this election. Maybe it can be chalked up to a lack of wisdom, or a disregard for wisdom amongst newly minted adults, (a.k.a.) the youth vote. When polled about who they trust (by occupation), people have consistently ranked Doctors and Teachers at the top of the list, and Lawyers at or near the bottom.

In a 2006 Harris Poll, lawyers would have maintained their position at the bottom of the trustworthiness barrel, except for the fact that the Pollster included Actors as a new choice. Actors are now at the bottom of the list, bumping Lawyers up a notch to second least trustworthy.

I suppose lawyers are inherently bound to be untrustworthy. Their duty to advocate for clients requires the use of blinders and shaded glasses. The de facto standard for all other people on the planet is that honesty is a non-negotiable precondition to good citizenship. Holding lawyers to the same standard would mean criminals could never obtain adequate representation in court.

Lawyers are trained to put the truth in their back pocket, lest they be tempted to violate a client's right to representation. Not withstanding the fact that lawyers will argue the notion, many will have a difficult time finding the contents of their back pocket outside of the lawyer-client setting. Everyone tends to become what we practice. Physicians are not expected to leave their medical knowledge at the clinic.

It seems that in order to maintain a sense of normalcy, lawyers have no choice but to adopt an altered view of truth. One of the highest-resolution mental snapshots of this phenomenon at work was in the case of Bill Clinton, defending his blatant disregard for honesty while giving testimony to a Grand Jury.

Remember: "…it depends on what the definition of IS, is".

Americans have a lot of common-sense wisdom in their gut, and in that light they have ranked lawyers near or at the bottom of the trustworthiness scale. Nevertheless, voters have consistently put those they find least trustworthy (lawyers) in power. Fifty-nine lawyer Senators (59%) and one-hundred seventy-four lawyer Representatives (40%) were elected to the 110th Congress.

None of this makes a bit of sense. Americans have entrusted their most precious asset (this unique country) to people they trust the least, and according to recent polls, voters are thinking about putting another lawyer in power, Barack Obama.

Senator Obama still maintains that his association with un-repentant terrorists is no big deal. In fact, he describes William Ayers as a well-respected college professor, even though Ayers has said there were too few domestic terrorist bombings. Obama now says he does not agree with Ayers' methods. Senator Obama tells us that his bigoted America hating pastor of twenty years is not someone he agrees with either.

I don't know, but coming out in the light of a national election, these denouncements are not convincing at all. The integrity that Obama (allegedly) keeps in his rear pocket has been waved in our faces, sort of like flashing a badge without giving us time to read what it says.

Democrats hold a majority in both Houses of Congress, and Democrats have been wailing incessantly, telling the American people how Republicans (especially G. W. Bush) are to blame for everything wrong in America. These are lawyers, people, and 68% of you believe lawyers are not going to be truthful.

Sixty-nine percent of Americans polled believe that Actors are the least trustworthy of all, and that they are least likely to tell the truth. Yet, actors hands-down are stumping for Barack Obama, a lawyer who ranks only one percentage point higher in trustworthiness than actors. The Actors are considered the least capable of telling you the truth, yet many Americans have believed them, accepting their assessment of what is good for America, and who is to blame for the problems we face as a nation.

None of this makes any sense folks. Why don't you listen to that common sense voice that guides you in all else that you do. Actors and lawyers are working overtime; spending tens of millions of dollars trying to convince you to ignore that little common sense voice. The least trustworthy want you to give them even more power. They want you to put more lawyers in Congress and they want you to put a lawyer in the Presidency.

If Americans really want "Change for America", I might suggest that throwing lawyers out would be a great place to start. There is no doubt that a lot of dysfunction exists in government, but the lawyers want you to believe that they are blameless.

Look more closely at the innocent grin on the fox's face, and you may detect a feather or two, caught on his whiskers. Lawyers are masters at deflection, and the deflection of blame from lawyers in Congress seems to come effortlessly and without any hint of remorse.

Lawyers have more than half the power of our Legislative branch of government. It makes absolutely no sense to hand the office we need to trust in most, the Presidency, to someone we instinctively trust the least, Barack Obama, the lawyer.

IMMIGRATION: Illegals vs. American taxpayers

SIMMONS: Illegals vs. American taxpayers
Deborah Simmons (Contact)
More than a few pundits and commentators have called the Oct. 7 debate between Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama a snoozer because the two candidates didn't go at each other. Whether you concur or not with their assessment, one thing is certain, the candidates are not being grilled on the issue of illegal immigration and its inextricable link to our economic well-being and our national security.

Exhibit A is a violent snapshot from Mr. McCain's home county, Maricopa County, Ariz. It unveils, in brutally honest facts and candid law-enforcement comments, what happens when sanctuary and amnesty policies tied the hands of law enforcers in Phoenix.

Phoenix police reported more than 350 extortion-related kidnappings in 2007 and the city is now known as America's "kidnap capital." A special unit trying to arrest the problem is also grappling with something dubbed "virtual kidnapping," whereby a criminal claims it has kidnapped a relative, friend or associate of another criminal and threatens physical harm if that other criminal fails to pay a ransom. The ransoms range from $50,000 to $1 million.

"Phoenix is ground zero for illegal narcotics and illegal human smuggling in the United States, Phoenix Detective Phil Roberts says. "There's a lot of illegal cash out there in the valley, and a lot of people want to get their hands on it."

Even the innocent are being snatched off the streets. A 14-year-old girl standing in front of the home of a known drug dealer was mistaken as the dealer's daughter by armed abductors. Blessedly she was released. Other victims have not been as fortunate.

Illegals and other parts of the black market enterprise known as human trafficking often use what is called a "drop house." Arizona authorities raided once such house just this week and found 11 illegals and six traffickers. "[T]he illegal immigrants told police that they were held against their will and some were beaten, kicked and struck with pistols because their family members couldn't come up with ransom money," the East Valley Tribune reported on Oct. 8.

Kidnappings aren't Phoenix and Maricopa's only crime problem tied to illegals. "Illegal immigrants account for one-third of drug convictions, 85 percent of criminal impersonation or fake ID convictions, 44 percent of forgery convictions and 20 percent of felony DUI convictions. Nearly 20 percent of all convicted criminals in Maricopa County are illegal aliens and 21 percent of jail inmates are in the country illegally," said Judicial Watch's Corruption Chronicles Blog. The site goes on to report that in Arizona alone: Illegals are responsible for 13 percent of stolen autos, 11 percent of murders and 10 percent of sex crimes.

How does this affect Main Street? It is estimated that every violent crime costs Joe Six Pack and Harriett Homeowner $20,000.

When the economy was in better shape, Americans were in better shape to look the other way — our elected leaders trying to earn their keep inside the Beltway certainly did. While Main Streeters were telling the occupants of the Capitol to reject amnesty legislation, John McCain reached across the aisle to his Democratic friend Ted Kennedy on comprehensive immigration reform.

Consider this: Officer Nick Erfle was doing what we witness our officers doing every day, when, about a year ago, he and his partner approached three jaywalkers. One man drew a gun and mortally shot Officer Erfle in the face, and then carjacked and kidnapped the driver. Police killed the gunman in a standoff. And guess what? The gunman was an illegal alien who had a felony record, had been deported in 2006 but managed to re-enter the country.

Phoenix, of course, isn't the only city where illegals are committing abductions, dealing drugs and killing our law enforcers, or even committing such misdemeanors as jaywalking, graffiti, urinating in public, etc. They and American-born citizens are doing that and more all across America.

What's also criminal, though, is that neither Mr. McCain nor Mr. Obama is talking about it — and their campaigns can't hide behind, "Well, the economy is just too important." Indeed, while the economy has been the No. 1 issue on Americans' minds all year, the campaigns didn't even pay attention until Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson said the sky was falling.

Well, long before Mr. Paulson clued us in, Americans were begging for tougher immigration enforcement — and just like Washington waited too late to "fix" the financial markets, so, too, is Washington playing footsies with illegal aliens.

It's easy to figure out how much taxpayers spend per month on each $20,000 violent crime that is committed in Any City, USA. That's frightening enough. What's even more spooky is that while officers are losing their lives preventing crime, officers are also using valuable hours trying to save the lives of criminals who have been kidnapped by other criminals.

Some of the costs of illegal immigration are hidden no longer. Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain should be challenged accordingly.

UPDATE: Second 'Virgin Birth' Documented in Shark

SEE: http://thesteadydrip.blogspot.com/2008/10/scientists-virginia-sharks-pup-virgin.html

Second 'Virgin Birth' Documented in Shark
Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

Oct. 10, 2008 -- The first documented virgin shark birth seemed like an odd miracle, but now a second female has become pregnant sans daddy, adding to the evidence that female sharks don't always need a male to conceive, according to a new study.

Virgin birth, scientifically known as parthenogenesis, has previously been proven in certain amphibians, reptiles, birds and bony fish. It's now suspected that most, if not all, female sharks possess the ability.

"Parthenogenesis may not have evolved in sharks," Demian Chapman, who led the research, told Discovery News. "It may just be an occasional mistake that sometimes occurs when eggs are left unfertilized."

Chapman, a shark scientist with the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, explained that during egg production, a female shark produces four cells. Only one of these becomes the egg. Another of the four is called "the sister polar body," which is a close genetic match to the egg.

During parthenogenesis, according to Chapman, "the sister polar body fuses with the egg and injects its chromosomes into it."

"Therefore, it acts like a sperm and triggers the development of an embryo," he said.

The discovery in this case is bittersweet, since the virgin shark in question, a female blacktip shark named "Tidbit," died after living for eight years without a male companion at the Virginia Aquarium.

An autopsy upon her death revealed that she was pregnant with a single offspring. DNA testing of the unborn offspring showed that it contained no genetic material from a father.

A paper outlining the findings appears in the latest issue of the Journal of Fish Biology.

Chapman and his team made a similar discovery just last May, when a hammerhead residing at an Omaha, Neb., zoo became pregnant after not being in contact with male sharks for at least three years. DNA fingerprinting techniques were used in that case as they were for Tidbit.

The method is identical to how researchers handle human paternity testing.

Female sharks can store sperm for long periods of time, which is why the scientists needed to confirm, through the DNA analysis, the lack of paternal input.

Despite the novelty of the phenomenon, virgin births are inferior to regular shark births in two major respects.

First, the female appears to only be able to produce a single offspring in this manner. Females that mate can have litters ranging from a few to more than 100 shark pups, depending on the species.

Second, the offspring of a virgin birth has "reduced genetic diversity when compared to its mother or any other shark produced by sex," Chapman said, adding that the process is "no great white hope for depleted shark populations."

He hopes that future conservation efforts will focus on "robust shark populations with balanced gender ratios, rather than hoping for a bailout from some interesting quirk of reproduction."

Robert Hueter, director of the Center for Shark Research at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida, told Discovery News that he supports the new findings since "the research methods are sound and the conclusion of a parthenogenetic birth in this shark species is proven."

Hueter said it's still possible that virgin births are more of "an egg developmental aberration rather than a physiological response to a lack of a mate," but he predicts "time will tell as more research is focused on this interesting subject."

Such revelations may come sooner rather than later, as Chapman is now analyzing the DNA of an offspring from yet another suspected virgin shark birth.

MEDIA: What happened to the media?

What happened to the media?
By Karyn Gaidos

I am not trying to sound trite, but honestly I don't know whether to laugh or to cry.

What happened to our jaded media who looked for the fire when they even had a glimpse of smoke? What happened to the media who wanted every single detail of a blue dress and a naughty cigar?

As much as I thought all of the insidious coverage of that Presidential misstep was a bit much, I would take that any day over this overly-apathetic, take-any-answer-at-face-value media we are dealing with now.

Come on media. A sitting president enjoying a peaceful and prosperous eight years has a little fun with an intern, and you went after every last, salacious detail of each and every phone call and encounter.

Now in a time of war and financial meltdown, we have a relatively unknown candidate for the highest office in the land, who keeps fluffing off reports of radical associations as if he is swatting a mosquito away, and you just accept his nonsensical answers at face value.

Never would I have thought that the American media would let an unknown politician running for President get away with having "Community Organizer" as a main feature of his short resume and the seemingly endless radical connections that keep emerging.

Let's recap some of what Barrack Obama seems to have skated passed the American media -- and by default -- much of the American public.

First comes the twenty-year association with a very racist, radical and politically-incorrect Reverend Wright, who is on tape ranting and raving about the American government, white people, Hillary Clinton and many American ideals. His extreme, radical bias against the American government, the American Dream and white people are clearly depicted.

Even though Obama clearly spent 20 years sitting in the pews of Reverend Wright's church and has mentioned him as his spiritual guide on several occasions, the media allowed him to escape relatively unscathed with the announcement that he is leaving his church. This appeased the media and seemed to appease the masses.

Who cares about what it says about his judgment and philosophy to have sat in his pews for 20 years and have used him as his spiritual guide? They said, "Let's get back to the issues."

And so they did.

Then the alternative media started wondering, "What exactly is a Community Organizer, and how does that prepare someone for presidency"? That is a great question, but the mainstream media ignored that question entirely and made it sound like he was some do-gooder who was providing community service.

Anyone at all who bothered to look into what exactly Barrack Obama did as a Community Organizer would have found that he was involved with radical organizations, such as ACORN. Once it came out that ACORN is in frequent trouble for voter fraud and has been caught shaking down mortgage executives to offer bad loans to risky home buyers, his campaign manager says that he didn't work for ACORN. He worked for Project Vote.

The media just left it at that. They didn't bother to report that Project Vote has always been an ACORN affiliate project, and that Barrack Obama did, in fact, serve as ACORN's attorney at least in one Motor Voter Law case. They would also have discovered that he acted as a trainer, who trained young people to be radicals.

Instead, the media ignored that he addressed ACORN's Convention recently and all of the other facts mentioned above, and let the story end with the bogus explanation about Project Vote having been his employer, not ACORN.

Early in his bid for President, it came out that Barrack Obama bought property next door to his good pal, Tony Rezko, who got it for him at $300,000 under market value. Did I mention Rezko is a felon who is most likely on his way to prison for shaking down vendors who wanted to do business with the State of Illinois? I wonder where he learned that tactic? I am sure it wasn't Harvard Business School. I would bet he learned that in some Marxist textbook.

So after that connection gets swept under the rug and dismissed as John McCain's attempt to avoid the real issues, yet another radical association emerges - Bill Ayers.

This guy started a radical, anti-American, terrorist group called the Weather Underground and bombed the Capitol, the Pentagon, the New York City Police Headquarters, and the home of a Judge presiding over a trial of another radical group, the Black Panthers.

It comes out that Barrack Obama launched his political career in this despicable terrorist's living room, sat on some boards with him, collaborated on education projects with him and who knows what else. I wish the media would find out what else. Since when would they let a story like this go?

I'll tell you when - since they decided they were in the bag for Barrack Obama.

Even though Obama and his advisors keep changing their stories about his connection with Ayers, which would indicate to anyone that there is a lie hidden within the spin, the media has not challenged one single statement that has come from Obama's camp.

There is a chance that a man with a history of radical, Anti-American connections will be our next President, and we are going to treat these reports of his connections as a McCain campaign ploy to distract the public from the real issues.

I cannot think of an issue more pressing than the political agenda and theoretical basis of our next President and Commander-in-Chief. Can you? Radicalism and Socialism have defined him and might soon define our country if the media doesn't wake up and report the facts so that the American people can see things as they really are - not as they are packaged.

Barrack Obama has packaged himself as a Patriotic American looking to serve the people and help the "middle class." Frighteningly, what he might really be is an Anti-American, Socialist, who is looking to own the "middle class."

You think I am exaggerating? Thanks to the mainstream media, you might not know that Barrack Obama sought after and won the New Party's endorsement in 1996.

The New Party is a Socialist, Left-Wing faction of the Democratic Party who disdained Clinton's middle-of-the-road policies. Barrack Obama is now running as a Centrist, despite all of the evidence, including his voting record, that shows that he is as Left-Wing as they come.

Like I said, let's unwrap the packaging and get to the heart of this man before he takes the helm of a country in middle of two wars and a devastating economic crisis.

SCIENCE CLIMATE: Huge sigh of relief as sunspot appears

Huge sigh of relief as sunspot appears
Published: 10 Oct 08 - 0:00
A sunspot has just appeared on the sun and many people are breathing a sigh of relief. Why?

Well firstly, what is a sunspot? A sunspot is actually a huge magnetic storm on the sun, which, when one looks at the sun, appears as a darker spot on the bright surface.

Do not look at the sun with binoculars or a telescope, as doing that will probably destroy your eye – there are ways of projecting the sun's image.

The sun has a well-known 11-year cycle, during which it moves from Solar Max to Solar Min; this means from a state of many sunspots, or solar storms, to few.

Sunspot data has been collected since 1749, and 100 or more ‘spots' can occur during a single month of the maximum portion of the cycle.

We have just been through Solar Min, and the return of sunspots is late. During the last few months, there have been virtually no spots, and a month with no spots at all is very rare.

It has been found that there is a direct correlation between the number of sunspots and global warming, and, consequently, the state of the climate.

The last time the sun was as quiet as it is now was 400 years ago, and that signalled the onset of a period of global cooling, the coldest point of which is known as the Maunder Minimum. At that time, New York harbour froze to such a degree that people could walk from Manhattan island over to the island on which the Statue of Liberty stands today. In London, the Thames froze, and ice fairs were held on the river.

There has been no global warming since 1998; in fact, there has been a slight cooling. In 2005, Russian astronomer Khabilullo Abdusamatov predicted that the state of the sun could trigger a rapid cooling if it stayed this way. So it is with relief that the current sunspot has made its appearance – maybe more will follow.

Dr Timothy Patterson, director of the Geosciences Centre at Carleton University, has found "excellent correlations" between solar fluctuations and global temperature, whereas he says there are no such correlations with the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. Patterson says there is no surprise in this, since "the sun is the ultimate source of energy on this planet".

Sunspot climate research dates back to 1991, when the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) released a study showing that world temperatures over the last several centuries correlated very closely with solar cycles.

Further research, led by the DMI's Dr Henrik Svensmark, has revealed what appears to be happening. The temperature of the planet is related to how much cloud cover there is. Fewer clouds mean a warmer planet, since sunlight strikes the earth and warms it up. More clouds mean that the tops of the clouds reflect the sun's heat back into outer space.

The amount of cloud cover is related to the quantity of cosmic rays coming into the atmosphere. Cosmic rays are energetic nuclear particles that originate in the stars and constantly hurtle through space. While you read this article, a few cosmic rays will pass through your body.

As the cosmic rays race through the atmosphere, they strike atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, and this gives rise to nucleation points, which induce clouds to form, from the water vapour in the air.

This is the same mechanism that drives the formation of the long trails of cloud that appear behind the engines of high-flying jet aircraft. The specs of soot and ions in the jet exhaust provide the nucleation sites for droplets of water to form, which are then seen as the familiar ‘contrails'.

But the earth has protection. This protection is provided by the magnetic field around the planet. This field extends out a great distance, and its effects are seen half way to the moon.

The earth's magnetic field acts as a shield, preventing many cosmic rays from getting through to our atmosphere. Then there is another phenomenon, which is known as the Solar Wind. The sun blasts out a huge stream of nuclear particles, including charged particles, which race away from the sun and impact the earth.

The charged particles interact with the earth's magnetic field, giving rise to, besides other effects, the awe-inspiring northern and southern lights, which look like gossamer curtains of coloured lights in the polar skies.

As the magnetic storms on the sun's surface vary in number, which we see as the sunspot count, so the intensity of the Solar Wind alters. As the wind alters, so it alters the magnetic protection around the earth.

When there are many sunspots, a stronger magnetic field develops around the earth, and this shields the planet from the cloud-forming cosmic rays. The result is less cloud cover and so a warmer planet. A quiet sun, like we have now, results in more clouds covering the earth, and so a cooling climate results.

During the Little Ice Age of 400 years ago, the Solar Minimum stayed for years, and one could walk across New York harbour. Dr Kenneth Tapping, a solar researcher at Canada's National Research Council, has said that if we do not get some sunspots soon, we could be heading for an extended chilly period.

LITERITURE: An example of political commentary as art. Mark Steyn

Mark Steyn

My favorite Presidential heritage site is the Coolidge homestead in Plymouth Notch, Vermont: I have seen the mausoleums of mighty kings, but none compares to the row of headstones on a snowbound hillside cemetery, seven generations of Coolidges lined up in a row, all buried under simple, bald granite markers with only an all but imperceptible small American eagle to distinguish the 30th president from his forebears and descendants. The American ideal: the citizen-president.

Or so I always assumed. But let’s be bipartisan here. If I were a Democrat, I’d salute Harry S Truman, the Missouri haberdasher who — whoa, “haberdasher!” There’s a word you don't hear too much nowadays, and, if you did, it’d probably be because the Treasury Secretary and the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee are on cable TV standing on the steps of the Capitol announcing a 700 gazillion-dollar bipartisan haberdashery bailout package because the global haberdashery sector is too big to fail and if we don't act now there’ll be a massive planetary ripple effect that could take down ladies’ lingerie, if you'll pardon the expression.
