Are Evangelicals or University Professors More Irrational?

Last week, The New York Times published an opinion piece by Karl W. Giberson and Randall J. Stephens, a physics professor and history professor at Eastern Nazarene College, respectively. The authors take evangelicals to task for being anti-intellectual, anti-reason and anti-science. Their evidence:

-- Evangelicals doubt man-made global warming,

-- Evangelicals believe that gays can "pray away" their homosexuality.

-- Evangelicals believe Earth is only thousands of years old and that men lived alongside dinosaurs.

-- Evangelicals oppose same-sex marriage.

Given how often they are made, it's worth analyzing these charges.

With regard to man-made global warming, the accusation that all skeptics are anti-science is despicable and, indeed, anti-science. The list of prominent scientists who dissent -- including the scientist widely considered the dean of climate science in America, Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- is so long that there are entire websites that feature their names and credentials: There's a Wikipedia page titled "List of Scientists opposing the mainstreat scientific assessment of global warming" and a website called PetitionProject.org.

The authors of the Times op-ed piece, like virtually all other left-wing intellectuals who comment on the subject, dismiss all skepticism regarding the Al Gore hypothesis that humanity is headed toward a worldwide apocalypse due to heat resulting from man-made carbon emissions. This is a reflection on these intellectuals' politics, not on their commitment to science.

With regard to "praying away" homosexuality -- if it is indeed the normative evangelical position that all gays, with the right faith, can cease being sexually attracted to the same sex -- that position is wrong. But to the best of my knowledge, that is not the normative evangelical position; evangelicals believe that no more than they believe that prayer alone will end any undesired physical condition.

At the same time, the opposite position -- the position of nearly all the liberal intellectual world -- that everyone's sexual orientation is fixed is a position also driven by ideology rather than by science. Society has a huge influence on how people act out their sexuality, including the gender of person with whom they choose to be sexual. Human sexuality -- especially female -- is far more elastic than the intellectual community admits. And the widespread liberal belief that, all things being equal, it makes no difference whether a child is raised by a mother and father or by two fathers or two mothers is hardly rational. On the issue of homosexuality, the intellectual left is just as driven by ideology as evangelicals.

With regard to those evangelicals -- and for that matter, those ultra-orthodox Jews -- who believe that Earth is less than 10,000 years old and that there either were no dinosaurs or that they lived alongside human beings, my reaction has always been: So what? I believe that Earth is many millions of years old, that "six days" is meant as six periods of time (the sun wasn't even created until the third day, so how could there have been any days before then?) and that dinosaurs preexisted man by millions of years.

But what real-life problem is caused by people who believe otherwise? Does it affect any of their important behaviors in life? Do they not take their children to doctors? Do they oppose medical research? Do they reject scientific discoveries that affect our lives? No. Not at all. Are there no evangelical or ultra-orthodox Jewish doctors? Of course there are, and apparently they are very comfortable learning and practicing science.

Compared to the many irrational beliefs of secular, leftist intellectuals -- good and evil exist even though there is no God; male and female are interchangeable; international institutions are the hope of mankind -- evangelical irrational beliefs are utterly benign.

And in regards to same-sex marriage, why is the normative Christian and Jewish belief that marriage should be between a man and a woman anti-science and anti-intellectual? What we have here is the usual left-wing tactic of smearing opponents. If you disagree with race-based affirmative action, you are a racist. If you disagree with the ever-expanding welfare state, you lack compassion. If you disagree with redefining marriage in the most radical way ever attempted in history, you are a hater.

No wonder the left developed the foolish and destructive self-esteem movement -- no one has anywhere near the self-esteem leftists have. They are certain that they are better human beings in every way than those who have the temerity to oppose them.

This Jew will take the evangelicals' values and the evangelicals' America over those of left-wing intellectuals' any day of the year. If evangelicals come with some views I find irrational, that's a tiny price to pay compared to the price humanity has paid for the left's consistently broken moral compass -- when it comes to America; Communism and Islamism; superiority of peace studies over waging war against evil; America's role in the world; Israel; the welfare state; Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and all the other left-wing dictators whom the left-wing has celebrated; the belief that men and women are basically the same; the greater worth of any animal than of the unborn human; and nearly every other major moral issue.

If these professors typify the views of Eastern Nazarene, which is officially listed as a Christian university, it is reason for despair. Once left-wing values enter the evangelical bloodstream, there is almost no hope for America.

Doing away with collective bargaining and crooked unions pays huge dividends

The Democrats and Liberals are keeping really quiet about this.   Is There any wonder why Obama stayed away from Wisconsin on his latest Campaign Tour (Listening Tour, Cough! Cough!), even though he was right next door.  Wisconsin is the last place they want to talk about, just like New Jersey!

This got real quiet as to how it came out.  Well, here are the results.

Remember the violent and disgusting demonstrations over Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker doing away with collective bargaining for Teacher's unions?  The results are in.  Some school districts went from a $400,000 deficit to a $1,500,000 surplus as a result.  They are even hiring new teachers, not firing like the Liberals said would happen.  Why? 
It seems that the insurance company that provided all the "so-called" benefits to the teachers was an insurance company owned and operated by the teacher's union.  Since the outfit was guaranteed to get the insurance business from the teachers, and the State had to pay for it (not the teachers) the insurance company was increasing  annual costs every single year to become the most expensive insurance company in the state.  Then the company was donating millions and millions of dollars to its favorite democrat politicians who, when they got elected, guaranteed to keep funding the union's outrageous costs.  In other words, the insurance company was a "pass through" for Wisconsin taxpayer money directly to the democrat politicians.
Nice racket, and this is the racket that is going on in every single State that allows collective bargaining.  No wonder the States are taking it away. Now the State of Wisconsin is free to put the insurance contract out for bids and, lo and behold, they have saved so much money it has turned deficits into surplus amounts.  As a result, none of the teachers had to be laid off, everyone got a raise, etc., etc., and the taxpayers of Wisconsin don't have to pay more taxes to fund the union's political ambitions.
If you weren't aware of the reasons Gov. Walker was fighting to take away collective bargaining, it gives you an idea of the problem the Republican Party has.  Outside of one or two, none of them know how to speak up and explain properly what the problem was.  We could sure use a Ronald Reagan now, someone who could explain things for people to understand, since we know that people don't like to read anymore.

Wisconsin schools buck union to cut health costs

The Hartland-Lakeside School District, about 30 miles west of Milwaukee in tiny Hartland, Wis., had a problem in its collective bargaining contract with the local teachers union. The contract required the school district to purchase health insurance from a company called WEA Trust. The creation of Wisconsin's largest teachers union -- "WEA" stands for Wisconsin Education Association -- WEA Trust made money when union officials used collective bargaining agreements to steer profitable business its way.
The problem for Hartland-Lakeside was that WEA Trust was charging significantly higher rates than the school district could find on the open market. School officials knew that because they got a better deal from United HealthCare for coverage of nonunion employees. On more than one occasion, Superintendent Glenn Schilling asked WEA Trust why the rates were so high. "I could never get a definitive answer on that," says Schilling.
Changing to a different insurance company would save Hartland-Lakeside hundreds of thousands of dollars that could be spent on key educational priorities -- especially important since the cash-strapped state government was cutting back on education funding. But teachers union officials wouldn't allow it; the WEA Trust requirement was in the contract, and union leaders refused to let Hartland-Lakeside off the hook.
That's where Wisconsin's new budget law came in. The law, bitterly opposed by organized labor in the state and across the nation, limits the collective bargaining powers of some public employees. And it just happens that the Hartland-Lakeside teachers' collective bargaining agreement expired on June 30. So now, freed from the expensive WEA Trust deal, the school district has changed insurers.
"It's going to save us about $690,000 in 2011-2012," says Schilling. Insurance costs that had been about $2.5 million a year will now be around $1.8 million. What union leaders said would be a catastrophe will in fact be a boon to teachers and students.
But the effect of weakening collective bargaining goes beyond money. It also has the potential to reshape the adversarial culture that often afflicts public education. In Hartland-Lakeside, there's been no war between union-busting bureaucrats on one side and impassioned teachers on the other; Schilling speaks with great collegiality toward the teachers and says with pride that they've been able to work together on big issues. But there has been a deep division between the school district and top union executives.
In the health insurance talks, for example, Schilling last year began telling teachers about different insurance plans, some of which, like United HealthCare's, required a higher deductible. "We involved them, and they overwhelmingly endorsed the change to United HealthCare," he says. But even with the teachers on board, when school officials presented a change-in-coverage proposal to union officials, it was immediately rejected. The costly WEA Trust deal stayed in place.
Now, with the collective bargaining agreement gone, Schilling looks forward to working more closely with teachers. "I would say the biggest change is we have a lot more involvement with a wider scope of teachers," he says. When collective bargaining was in effect, "We dealt with a select team of teachers, a small group of three or four who were on the bargaining team, and then the union director. Any information that went to the teachers went through them. Now, we feel that we will have a direct dialogue."
It's not hard to see why union officials hate the new law so much. It not only breaks up cherished and lucrative union monopolies like high-cost health insurance; it also threatens to break through the union-built wall between teachers and administrators and allow the two sides to work together more closely. The old union go-betweens, who controlled what their members could and could not hear, will be left aside.
Hartland-Lakeside isn't the only school district that is pulling free from collective bargaining agreements that mandated WEA Trust coverage. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Pewaukee School District, not far from Hartland-Lakeside, will save $378,000 by next year by leaving WEA Trust. The Menomonee Falls School District, farther north, will reportedly save $1.3 million. Facing state cutbacks, the districts can't afford to overpay for union-affiliated coverage.
Look for the unions to fight back with everything they have. If the Wisconsin situation has shown anything, it is that organized labor views the collective bargaining fight as a life-or-death struggle. If the unions lose in Wisconsin, the clamor for change could spread to other states. What happened in Hartland-Lakeside could become a model for other schools looking for new and better ways to do business.

One of the most heartbreaking realities of contemporary Christendom is the obvious exponential decrease in its biblical discernment. While much of the civilized world has been wholly secularized, there was a remnant of believers in America that pushed against that godless agenda snatching this great Christian experiment from us. Sadly, if today's church were transplanted to the first century, we would likely be the ones responsible for the breeding of and caring for stadium lions. And, that is no better exemplified than by the church's virtual silence over the numerous crimes that have been committed regarding the illegal presidency of Barack Obama.
Biblical discernment is that which allows the believer to understand the deeper, or underlying, truths of God's Word, rather than what is often purported to be "truth," but is nothing but a worldly perversion of it. The misuse or misinterpretation of God's Word has been responsible for many atrocities throughout history, and there is presently one that is being widely used to promote the church's laziness and apathy in this arena: Romans 13:1,2 (Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.).
What the church must understand is that, even though earthly authority was established and ordained by God, He also clearly delineated limits to that authority. The authority of man plainly ends at the line where it conflicts with God's authority. In the book of Acts, we are told that the apostle Peter and others had been imprisoned by the governing authorities for preaching the Gospel, and then were supernaturally transported out of the prison, allowing them to continue their preaching. When they were, once again, brought before the governing authorities and questioned regarding why they were continuing to preach, when they had been commanded not to, their response was, "We ought to obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29)
Had our forefathers subscribed to the current lukewarm understanding of these doctrinal principles, there would have been no America, and we would all be British subjects. America was borne out of the rejection of and rebellion against an ungodly, unjust government.
God has mandated that the church speak the truth in love; moreover, for the Christian, there is no distinction between the spiritual and the secular, for everything we do should be done to honor and glorify God. Therefore, acquiescing to any lie cannot possibly bring about such honor or glory.
That God "allowed Barack Obama to ascend to the presidency, and therefore we have no other duty but to respect him, be in subjection to him, and pray for him" is an insidious lie from the evil one. Again, that is nothing but a heinous misinterpretation of scripture. As with these constitutional crimes, God allows every form of sin to be committed, but we are certainly not to hold our tongues about the sin, nor are we not to warn about its eternal penalty. Yes, God allowed this illegal presidency, but that is different from ascribing it to being His will, for God does not trade in deceit or fraud. God does not lie to accomplish His will. God merely allows man the ability to commit those sins, and, having succumbed to the power of sin, He will turn man over to the destruction of his flesh (1 Corinthians 5:5).
Abortion is legal in this country, but the church has consistently stood up against it because it is clearly opposed to God's law. Is that not a form of rejecting the law of the governing authority? If it were discovered that Barack Obama had wandered out of the White House one night, and had committed a brutal murder, would the church's posture be that, since God commands us to be in subjection to the governing authorities, we should simply keep silent about the crime, and merely work toward voting him out of office in the next election cycle? While that question may seem preposterous, it is essentially the same pragmatic belief of many church leaders, since it has been irrefutably shown that fraud and forgeries have been used to enable Obama's usurpation of the presidency. To remain silent about those crimes is no different than silence about any other crime.
While this is not an absolute truth, it is often helpful to familiarize oneself with those who populate either side of an issue to glean further insight into it. Those who are fighting daily for this truth to be understood and rectified are patriotic, upstanding members of society, and many are Bible-believing Christians. The types of people who are our strongest opposition can easily be seen at websites like the Fogbow and the Facebook page "Orly's World." These are most often profane, juvenile reprobates who promote just about every "religious" belief other than biblical Christianity. For the most part, they appear to be primarily atheistic. They promote a forced tolerance of every ungodly, man-made religion, while maintaining an adversarial posture toward any biblical follower of Christ (often, they even preach a "tolerance" of Islam, which is not a religion, but a political ideology bent on the destruction of western civilization).
One of these internet posters even goes so far as stalking those who proclaim the truth in this matter, and his unwelcome messages are often laced with profanity, school-yard taunts, and he has even promoted violence against us, stating that he wishes that "all birthers would be prosecuted, lined up against a wall, and shot." The most incredible fact about this person is that he is actually a Philadelphia lawyer. But, he is typical in this crowd of creatures who lack any character, and are the antithesis of the Americans our Founding Fathers were. For the most part, it is difficult to imagine that any of them are even adults.
Why, pastor, would you align yourself with the likes of these who hate the Christ you purport to preach? Your continued silence does just that!
American Patriot Terry Lakin, the former Army Lieutenant Colonel who ultimately forfeited his career and spent nearly six months in Leavenworth Prison, did so for nothing other than asking to be told the truth—is Barack Obama eligible to be our country's Commander-in-Chief? Rather than receiving a simple answer through documentation proving that he is, the truth was hidden from Terry, and he paid a tremendous price. What pastors and church leaders might not immediately understand is that, with their current silence, we are all paying a vast price, for, as Terry has poignantly stated, "The truth matters . . . the Constitution matters." Right now, that Constitution is under attack, and it is that Constitution which allows believers to share the Gospel of Christ openly and freely. Do not mistake, pastor, the more our Constitution is eroded, the less free you will be to preach the truth to a dying a world in America. The illegal presidency of Barack Obama is just a further erosion of our Constitution by those who reject the fact that America was founded as a Christian nation and are abrogating the rule of law in this country.
The time has come for the church to end her silence over the current illegal presidency. This is not a political issue, so there should be no pastoral fear of speaking the truth in it. This is a matter of right and wrong, and should be handled just as you would any other form of sin. In light of that, we are forming The Truth Matters Coalition—a consortium of American pastors and ministry leaders who will commit to sharing the truth with their congregations and ministries about the illegality of Barack Obama's presidency, and the unspeakable price this country will pay if we do not rise up against it. To be sure, many Christian leaders openly oppose this administration's policies, and rightly so, but doing only that is akin to swatting at the tail of the beast while ignoring its head. It lends legitimacy to what is illegitimate, and allows an America-ending precedent to stand unopposed.
