L.A. Archbishop Reads Letters of Children of Illegal Aliens to Promote Amnesty

L.A. Archbishop Reads Letters of Children of Illegal Aliens to Promote Amnesty
by Dr. Susan Berry 30 Jan 2014, 3:00 PM PDT
Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles read aloud the letters of children of illegal aliens that were addressed to Pope Francis and collected by a coalition of groups seeking rights for illegal immigrants. Gomez said he hoped the letters would challenge the consciences of Americans.

As a Catholic News Agency report in the National Catholic Register indicated on January 17th, Gomez discussed what the report said were “heartfelt letters to Pope Francis seeking his help and his prayers for their parents who have been deported or arrested.”

“They know that Pope Francis himself is the son of an immigrant. They know that he has the heart to understand what they are going through,” Gomez said. He added that reading the children’s letters “makes my heart ache.”

“They are so beautiful and so sad,” he told the civic group Town Hall Los Angeles.

A letter from Karla, a 15-year old girl born in Los Angeles, told Pope Francis she has a “very religious” family. Both her parents and her two older siblings are immigrants from Mexico.

“My mom is slowly going blind, and my dad has a heart problem. My sister is in a wheelchair, and she needs medical help, but they can’t get the medical help they need because they don’t have their legal documents,” she said.

“I know there are more people with the same or even worse situation. Some kids even younger than me have been separated from their parents and family,” Karla added. “I ask you to keep me and my family in your prayers.”

Karla also asked the Pope to pray for President Barack Obama, “so he can stop all deportation.”

Another young girl, Guadalupe, asked for the Pope’s help “to stop deporting families and separating families, because it’s sad to see kids be separated from their parents and the kids ending up as orphans.”

“I hope you can help us with this fight. You are our hope for all the families getting separated,” the girl told Pope Francis. She said she knew how it feels to be separated from her father, who died in October 2013.

Breitbart News spoke with Martha Ugarte, a spokesperson for the coalition of immigration rights groups.

“We are a coalition of different organizations over the years that have been trying to get immigration reform in the spotlight,” she told Breitbart News. “We work with churches for marches and immigration rights, but we’re not directly associated with the Church.”

Ugarte said the children wrote the letters as part of an activity in which “the coalition asked them if they would like to express their feelings in the letters.”

“The coalition is in contact with the parents of these children,” Ugarte said. “These kids are American citizens. They can speak up but their parents cannot. The kids sometimes don’t know if their parents are going to be deported.”

“Many of the immigrants feel the new pope has brought new hope,” she continued. “He is taking on all the hard issues and we’d like him to take on immigration reform in the United States.”

Ugarte said her coalition has had the children write letters to the pope in the past, as well as to President Obama and Santa Claus.

The children’s letters were collected by the coalition and brought to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.

Gomez said he would forward the letters to Pope Francis.

“My friends, this is what immigration is doing to the soul of our country,” Gomez said. “How we respond to these children is a challenge to our conscience — and it will be a measure of our humanity.”

California's Henry Waxman Stepping Down After 20 Terms in House

California's Henry Waxman Stepping Down After 20 Terms in House
Thursday, 30 Jan 2014 11:06 AM
By Newsmax Wires
Rep. Henry A. Waxman, a liberal icon whose 4-decade-long legislative record has made him one of the country’s most influential lawmakers, announced Thursday that he will retire from his California seat, the latest in a wave of departures that could prove pivotal for Democrats this year.

"In 1974, I announced my first campaign for Congress," Waxman, 74, said in a statement. "Today, I am announcing that I have run my last campaign. I will not seek re-election to the Congress and will leave after 40 years in office at the end of this year."

As chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in 2009 and 2010, Waxman worked with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also a California Democrat, to steer Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act through the chamber.

“In all my years in politics, I felt the moral claim that this country has failed in not providing every American access to health care,” Waxman said in March 2010, the month Obama signed the legislation into law.

Waxman was elected in 1974 as part of a wave of Democrats who won their seats three months after Republican Richard Nixon resigned the presidency amid the Watergate scandal. The other remaining member of that group serving in the House continuously since then, Representative George Miller, also of California, announced his retirement earlier this month.

Waxman took the helm of the Energy and Commerce panel by unseating, in a vote among House Democrats, Representative John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat and an ally of auto companies.

An advocate of environmental regulation, Waxman as chairman pushed for a cap-and-trade system to curb greenhouse-gas emissions. The House narrowly passed the legislation in June 2009 and sent it to the Senate, where it stalled.

Under his leadership the committee also investigated the circumstances surrounding the April 2010 explosion on a BP Plc- operated well in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 workers and created the worst oil spill in U.S. history.

Steroid Probe

Waxman lost the Energy and Commerce chairmanship after Republicans won the House majority in the 2010 elections. Since then, he has served as the committee’s top Democratic member.

As the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in 2007 and 2008, Waxman led investigations into steroid use in professional baseball and held hearings after the collapse of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the investment bank Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.

In 1994, as chairman of Energy and Commerce’s health subcommittee, Waxman held hearings that put the tobacco industry under the spotlight. At one session that gained wide coverage, tobacco company executives testified under oath that nicotine wasn’t addictive.

The hearings were credited with laying the groundwork for lawsuits that led in 1998 to a settlement in which major tobacco companies agreed to make payments to U.S. states to resolve claims that cigarettes caused public-health dangers.

‘Boiled Owl’

Waxman is “tougher than a boiled owl,” then-Senator Alan Simpson, a Wyoming Republican, said in 1990 after the two helped negotiate an agreement to revise clean-air laws.

Waxman was born in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights. On both sides of his family, his grandparents had emigrated from what is now Moldova to avoid anti-Jewish pogroms in the early 1900s.

Prior to taking his House seat in January 1975, Waxman served six years in the California Assembly. He forged a political alliance there with Democrat Howard Berman, a friend from their days as students at UCLA who served in the House with Waxman from 1983 to 2013.

He and Berman headed a political network named after them that for many years determined who held office in parts of Los Angeles and was fueled by wealthy donors in the city’s heavily Democratic Westside.

Waxman’s Tally

Democrats are favored to keep control of Waxman’s 33rd District, which includes parts of the Westside and all of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Malibu and Redondo Beach. Obama won 61 percent of the district vote in the 2012 election.

Waxman took a career-low 54 percent of the vote that year against a wealthy political independent who spent about $8 million in a district reshaped by the congressional line-drawing process.

Waxman is the 30th House member who’s announced plans to retire at the end of the year or seek a different political office. Most of those congressional districts lean heavily to one party.

Miller, 68, the other “Watergate Baby” giving up his seat in the 2014 election, represents a San Francisco-area district. The other Democrat in the House first elected in 1974, Representative Richard Nolan of Minnesota, served three terms and then left the chamber. He then returned after winning a seat in 2012.

Waxman’s former chief of staff, Phil Schiliro, recently returned to Washington to help Democrats tout the health law measure -- hurt by a flawed rollout late last year -- to voters before November’s elections. Schiliro, who had moved with his family to New Mexico, previously served as the Obama administration’s congressional liaison.

Hagel Voices Frustration with Afghan Foot-Dragging

Hagel Voices Frustration with Afghan Foot-Dragging
Thursday, 30 Jan 2014 03:33 PM
Expressing growing impatience, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday he doesn't know what to believe about new assurances from Afghanistan that President Hamid Karzai is moving closer to signing a pact to keep American troops in his country next year as advisers.

"What is coming out of the presidential palace today, or what President Karzai says today, I don't know," Hagel told a news conference in Warsaw. "It changes constantly."

Hagel pointedly noted that Karzai had "agreed — personally agreed — to the bilateral security agreement" negotiated between the two nations last year, yet continues to balk at signing it.

The deal would allow some U.S. service members to remain and keep training Afghan soldiers after most of the 39,000 troops now there withdraw. The 12-year-old U.S. combat mission is set to end in December.

The Obama administration has indicated it might be willing to keep as many as 10,000 military trainers in Afghanistan to advise forces fighting the Taliban insurgency.

Earlier, on his overnight flight from Washington to Warsaw, Hagel told reporters that Karzai's foot-dragging puts at risk the planning necessary for a post-combat mission.

"You can't just keep deferring and deferring," he said, "because at some point, the realities of planning and budgeting — it collides."

Since the new year, the Obama administration has repeatedly said it needs an agreement signed in weeks, not months, if it is to keep any troops in Afghanistan in 2015.

In Kabul on Thursday, Karzai's national security adviser voiced optimism about the pact.

Rangin Dadfar Spanta said he has grown more hopeful that the Afghan leader will sign the agreement before leaving office this year. Karzai has repeatedly said he wants to wait to sign the document until after the country chooses his successor in April 5 elections.

At a news conference, Spanta said intense talks in the last few days have made him "more optimistic" that the stalemate can be broken.

"We are working very intensively together with the United States authorities to reach and sign this agreement soon," Spanta said. "I cannot go today into detail, but I don't know — since two, three, four days, I am more optimistic compared to last week. Let us wait a few days more."

If the deal falls apart, Afghanistan could lose up to $15 billion a year in aid, effectively collapsing its fragile economy and making it unable to pay its 350,000-strong army and police.

Hagel, who was visiting Polish leaders to consult on Afghanistan and other security issues, sounded skeptical at his news conference in Warsaw when asked about Spanta's remarks.

Saying that the Afghan president's position keeps changing, Hagel noted that U.S. officials, including Gen. Joseph Dunford, the top US military commander in Afghanistan, have pressed Karzai and "talk with him constantly." But they have limited ability to influence his decision, Hagel said.

He added that U.S. allies who are willing to help train and advise Afghan forces beyond 2014 also are eager to know if there will be a U.S.-Afghan security agreement soon.

Insurgents in Afghanistan have intensified attacks recently in a campaign to regain territory as foreign forces prepare to leave the country.

Hollywood is Only His Day Job

'Monument' Trouble: Clooney Is No Cary Grant But He Could Have Been Greg Bautzer.

For nearly fifty years, until his death in 1987, Greg Bautzer was one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. The self-made mover and shaker was movie star-handsome, serial-dated Hollywood's Lana Turners and Joan Crawfords, and was a major force behind many of the consequential decisions that would shape Hollywood for decades -- including the installation of studio heads.

Bautzer wasn't an actor, director, or mogul -- he was an entertainment attorney. And his genius was his dedication to his clients (including Howard Hughes -- then the most powerful man in the world) and an uncanny ability to promote and ingratiate himself among Hollywood's royalty.

Today, George Clooney is in trouble yet again because his talents as a director/writer/actor are not living up to the myth he and his Hollywood media pals have so carefully crafted over the last two decades. His latest film, "Monuments Men" is looking like a critical dud, and he alone has never been anything close to a box office draw.

This is not to say Clooney doesn't have artistic talent. But his modest talents as an artist cannot and never have lived up to the hype. Because he's movie star-handsome (though not a movie star), practices the correct politics, and is obviously a genius at glad-handing the media, when it comes to the films he's directed that hit the left's political sweet spot (Good Night, and Good Luck; The Ides of March) or is seen as a Big Star good enough to slum in oh-so-important indie films as an actor, the media and Academy fall all over themselves with hosannas.

But those movies just aren't very good. In fact, nothing Clooney does is very good.

Competent? Sure.

Diverting? Fine.

The truth is that his resume is mediocre at best. There are a couple near-misses (The Descendants, Up In the Air), but his biggest hit in years is Gravity and you have to be reminded he is in it.

Clooney's good-not-great artistic abilities and TV-level acting talents continue to be an embarrassment for him.

Clooney should have stuck with his strengths: schmoozing, glad-handing, charming, being a guy people desperately want to be liked by… Had he chosen to become a manager or agent or Greg Bautzer,  he would probably be running Hollywood right now instead of wiping away another layer of flop sweat.

Clooney is only 53. He has three-decades of living ahead of him. Plenty of time cash in and do it right.

Dem Nunn leads GOP rivals in Georgia poll

Dem Nunn leads GOP rivals in Georgia poll
January 29, 2014, 04:33 pm
By Cameron Joseph
Georgia Senate candidate Michelle Nunn (D) has leads over four of her Republican rivals, according to a new poll conducted for the liberal group Americans United for Change.

Nunn leads Reps. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel (R) by margins of one to four points.

The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, might skew a bit Democratic — there are equal numbers of self-identifying Democrats and Republicans in its survey in the Republican-leaning state. More Republican voters are undecided in the poll, as well.

But its results are the latest sign that Nunn has a real chance of winning the race to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.).

The poll was conducted for the group to show raising the minimum wage is a strong issue for Democrats, even in red states. It found 54 percent of voters supported raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour, while 37 percent opposed it.

The poll of 640 Georgia voters was conducted from Jan. 24-26 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percent.

Video: Ted Cruz Grills Eric Holder On Investigation Into IRS Targeting Of Conseratives

Video: Ted Cruz Grills Eric Holder On Investigation Into IRS Targeting Of Conseratives
by Debra Heine 29 Jan 2014, 1:23 PM PDT
At a Senate Judiciary hearing, today, Sen. Ted Cruz took the opportunity to grill U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder about the DOJ's eight month investigation into the IRS's improper targeting of conservative groups.

At the hearing, Holder declared that the IRS investigation doesn’t warrant a Special Prosecutor and he steadfastly denied that the the current investigator has any conflict of interest, despite being a major Obama donor. As with all of the Regime's scandals, his excuse for not answering pertinent questions is, "I'm not going to discuss what we have done in an ongoing investigation."

That answer is of course designed to stall questioners until they run out the clock.

At the 5:10 mark, Holder denied he had any reason to believe the IRS investigation is conflicted, saying, “I don't have any basis to believe that the people who engaged in this investigation are doing so in a way other than investigations are normally done. That is by looking at the facts, applying the law to those facts, and reaching the appropriate conclusion. I don't have any basis to believe anything other than that is occurring.”

Sen. Cruz responded, “I would say a lot of American citizens have a basis to believe it, given 282 days have passed and no on has been indicted, 280 days have passed and many, if not all, of the victims have not even been interviewed. 280 days have passed and apparently the anger and outrage that both the President and you expressed has utterly disappeared. Indeed, in last night's State of the Union address the President did not so much as mention the word 'IRS.' So the anger and outrage sees very little manifestation in actual action."

In an exchange at the 9:41 mark, Cruz told Holder, “I would call upon you to carry out the tradition of independence that attorneys general have honored that office with for centuries and protect the integrity of the Department of Justice, given the political sensitivities, given the fact that individual citizens believe they are being persecuted by the Department of Justice for partisan reasons. It would further Justice and further the integrity of the Department of Justice for you to appoint a special prosecutor with a meaningful degree of independence to investigate and find out what happened, and I would suggest that any special prosecutor should have integrity beyond reproach, and not be a major Obama donor.”

Holder responded, “I don’t think that there is a basis for us to conclude on the information as it presently exists that there is any reason for the appointment of the independent counsel…The notion that somehow this has caused a loss of faith in this Justice Department is inconsistent with the facts.”

(Last I checked, Attorney General Holder had an approval rating of 23%.)
