Disney Cartoon Teaches Children Being a Princess Is a ‘State of Mind’

Disney XD cartoon Star vs. The Forces of Evil hopes to impart what it apparently believes to be an important lesson for children: boys can be princesses too, if they want to be.

A recent episode of the television series features lead character Marco Diaz (voiced by Adam McArthur) disguising himself as Princess Turdina in an effort to save a group of students at a reform school for princesses from the villainous principal Ms. Heinous. But all does not go according to plan.

Entertainment Weekly describes the scene:

On a recent episode of Star vs. The Forces of Evil, the character of Marco Diaz (voiced by Adam McArthur) disguised himself as Princess Turdina to help save the students at St. Olga’s Reform School for Wayward Princesses from Ms. Heinous, the wicked headmistress.

Marco is about to reveal his truth to the students when Ms. Heinous storms in and outs him herself, pulling down his shirt to reveal a strand of chest hair. But the other princesses stand by Marco’s side.

After Marco reveals himself to be a boy, he gets support from female students at the princess school.

“That doesn’t prove anything! Princesses can be hairy!” one student exclaims.

“Turdina is a state of mind!” shouts another.

“He can be a princess if he wants to!” says yet another.

After the students lead a rebellion against Ms. Heinous, forcing her to disappear back through the portal in the sky from which she came, a robot DJ kicks off a dance party and one of the students goes to snap a selfie with the “boy princess.”

Star vs. The Forces of Evil — headed by showrunner Daron Nefcy — broke ground in progressive television in March of this year when the cartoon featured same-sex couples kissing, marking the first gay kisses on television for a Disney cartoon.

I JUST MET A GIRL NAMED MARIA

It was a long hard road just to graduate from Immokalee High School. Until she was 15 years old, she was on that road with her parents, following the harvest across America, from sea to shining sea. There were artichokes in California, cherries in Michigan, and tomatoes in Florida.
Maria's mother found a way to give roots to her family. She worked part-time, lived with relatives, and attended adult education classes while the rest of the family continued to harvest crops for a living. Maria's mother became a licensed cosmetologist. She found a job at a beauty shop in Immokalee. With financial help from neighbors, her family finally had a home.
The rest of the family members found jobs, and for the first time in her life, Maria became a student who could actually stay in one school for an entire school year. Her grades began to improve. By the time Maria was a senior, her teachers began to notice that this was no ordinary girl named Maria.
One of her teachers encouraged Maria to apply for the Mensa Scholarship which is awarded at the end of each school year. Mensa is the high IQ society, and the local chapter members evaluate student essays to determine the winners. Some Mensa members see themselves as holy guardians of the English language. Things like spelling, grammar, syntax, and parts of speech are treated with reverence. Maria's essay was written in English which is not her native language. Maria won!
In addition to correct English usage, the Mensa essays are judged on the goals the student has for the future. Maria had a well thought-out plan. Maria’s dream was attending college, majoring in education, with a goal toward a Ph.D. Her dream was to establish a standardized curriculum in all the school districts in the great harvest regions of our country. She knows, first hand, that if migrant children can get high quality, consistent education, they will be able to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty that has been so much a way of life for her family.
My wife and I were invited to act as Masters of Ceremony for the Mensa Scholarship Awards Dinner. Our Mensa chapter believes that the parents of these young geniuses should at least be treated to a good dinner at a respectable restaurant, so we get together and treat the whole family. We were fortunate to be seated at the same table with Maria and her mother.
Maria's mother seemed to tolerate the fuss over her daughter with a benevolent amusement. Maria bubbled. She was irrepressibly charming. She confided to my wife that she was afraid that her makeup had smeared or run before the ceremony had even begun. She explained that they don't have air-conditioning at home, and the A/C in their old pickup hasn't worked since last year. Maria and my wife left to do the things that women do in front of mirrors. Maria's mother, who had seemed so composed earlier, leaned forward with an intense look on her face, "Maria is going to do something with her life. Thank you for helping." she said. A slight quiver of the lower lip was the only hint of the feelings behind her matriarchal dignity.
Several of the people at our table were struck with compassion for what we were witnessing. We were also inspired by such a pure example of the "American Dream." When Maria returned, some of us began to offer sympathy for all her hardships. Maria wanted none of it. "Things aren't so bad now. It has been a long time since we haven't had enough food," she said cheerfully.
In Naples, Florida, we know people who have a bad day if their hot tub springs a leak. Maria thinks things are OK if she has eaten that day.

·      If you participate in criminal behavior you are a criminal, and you don’t deserve to be treated as an equal with law abiding citizens.

·      If your demographic group commits more crime than other demographic groups you will be looked upon with suspicion, even if you personally are not a criminal.

·      Children raised by married parents have substantially better life outcomes compared with similar children raised in single-parent homes.

·      The overwhelming majority of welfare assistance to families with children goes to single-parent households. If your culture elects politicians who develop welfare programs which discourage fathers from living with their families, creating a large percentage of “fatherless” homes, that makes your voting habits sick and does not deserve equality.

·      If your demographic group has a large number of dysfunctional families, your children will not be well adjusted nor do well in school or the workplace.

·      If your demographic group has a high drop-out rate for high school, you are not the equal of educated people.

·      If you cannot properly read, write, and speak the language of your country, do not expect equal treatment when you apply for a job or interact with those who are fluent with the primary language.

·      If you use more than you produce or accept handouts, you are of no value to your society, and cannot expect to be treated as an equal.

·      If your demographic group makes up 12% of the population and accounts for 49% of all homicides, and if 93% of those murders are committed by other people in your own demographic group, your group is pathologically violent and should not be seen as equal to other less violent groups.

·      If your demographic group abuses illegal drugs and abuses alcohol you will not be the equal of sober, responsible people.

·      If you behave hatefully toward other demographic groups, you will not be respected.

·      If it is safer to be in the military than in your neighborhood, enlist now. If you get through boot camp you will be treated as an equal.

·      If you are blaming other people for your dysfunctional behavior, you have serious psychological problems, and don’t deserve to be treated as an equal.

Equality doesn’t come to you because of your color or heritage, no matter what it is. Laws cannot bestow equality, no matter how much politicians will lie to you to get your vote. You will be respected because of your behavior. You will be equal when your behavior is equal to other people in the nation.

There are dozens of additional demographic studies that have been cited above, but which make the same point. Don’t blame your color for your lack of equality. Blame your own behavior; or the people for whom you vote.

THERE IS A SOLUTION

The good news is that there is a way out. You do have equal opportunity. Change your behavior, and you will leave your demographic group behind, and become an equal.

You may be right that "simple will power" is not adequate to reverse decades of social pathology in your culture, but I do know that validating pathology and subsidizing it through welfare will prevent any tactic from being efficacious. The sub-culture we are discussing is sick to its core.

However, the solution is available within this very same demographic group. Not everybody is sick. One of the most valuable areas of research for epidemiologists is studying those who don't get sick. How are the functional people in this demographic group behaving? Mostly they succeed because of hard work, good values, a two-parent home and responsible living. And that is a universal recipe for success, and is not confined to any demographic group. These are nongovernmental solutions that can heal a sick society. Blaming the pathology on other people is not a solution. Blaming the pathology on history is not a solution.

PERSONAL VICTORY DESPITE PATHOLOGICAL INFLUENCES

There are no government solutions. There isn’t a “program” that will rescue you! Need an example? The Washington Post report notes that Dr. Ben Carson’s mother, Sonya, had a big influence in the life of a “screw-up kid with a temper” who later went on to become a world famous neurosurgeon and ultimately an outspoken, Conservative critic of many of President Obama’s policies, especially ObamaCare.

“Sonya had 24 siblings and was married at age 13. When she found out that her husband, Ben’s father, had a second family, they divorced. Unable to read, Sonya encouraged her kids to stop watching television and read two books per week.” Sonya Carson's life motto is: "Learn to do your best and God will do the rest." Thank you, Sonya!  That is the solution.
