Acquisition by Wanda Group (2012–2021)[edit]

In May 2012, AMC Theatres was acquired by Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, headquartered in Dalian, who paid $2.6 billion to acquire AMC's 5,048 screens in 347 theaters in the U.S. and Canada.[38] The deal was finalized on September 4, 2012.[39] The acquisition made Wanda the world's largest cinema chain.[40] Wang Jianlin, CEO of Dalian Wanda Group, announced that the company would plan to spend $500 million renovating AMC locations.[39]

AMC Theatres had eight movie theatres in Canada. In July 2012, four locations were sold to Cineplex Entertainment, and two more locations were sold to Empire Theatres and later acquired by Landmark Cinemas. The two remaining locations have since closed.[41]

Gerardo I. Lopez announced his resignation as CEO of AMC in August 2015. Craig Ramsey was appointed as the interim CEO by the company board.[42] In December 2015, AMC announced that Adam Aron would be the company's president and chief executive officer, as well as a member of the company's board of directors, beginning on January 4, 2016.[43]

In March 2016, AMC Theatres announced it would acquire competitor Carmike Cinemas.[44] In July 2016, Carmike's management accepted a revised offer, pending regulatory and shareholder approval.[45] The deal was closed on December 25, 2016, making AMC the largest cinema chain in the United States.[46]

On March 1, 2017, AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron stated that the company would rebrand Carmike Cinemas locations under the AMC name; smaller locations were rebranded under the new banner AMC Classic (which repurposes trademarks associated with Carmike). Aron also announced a plan to rebrand its kitchen-equipped theaters as AMC Dine-In.[47][48]

In July 2017, AMC Theatres announced they would cut $30 million in expenses by the end of the year. This cost reduction would be accomplished by reducing operating hours, cutting staffing levels, and other measures.[49]

In September 2018, Silver Lake Partners made a $600 million investment in AMC Theatres, whose proceeds were used to repurchase approximately 32% of Wanda Group's class B common stock.[50] However, the voting power of AMC's shares is structured in such a way (granting three votes per-share for each Class B share if its stake in the company is above 30%)[51] that, even after reducing its ownership of AMC common stock to just under 50% by the end of 2019, Wanda Group continued to retain majority control over AMC's board of directors.[52]

Did Disney Own Sound Of Freedom? Rights Explained & Why It Took 5 Years To Release

The 2023 box office hit Sound of Freedom took a long time to get released in theaters worldwide – read on for a history of the film’s struggles.

BY

SARAH LITTLE

PUBLISHED 4 DAYS AGO

https://screenrant.com/sound-of-freedom-movie-disney-rights-release/

Sound of Freedom, starring Jim Caviezel, has become a surprise hit at the box office, but the journey to success was a long one for the 2023 action film. The movie claims to recount the true story of Tim Ballard, played by Caviezel, who quit his job with the Department of Homeland Security to track down child sex trafficking rings and rescue the kidnapped children. His primary assignments with DHS included tracking down and arresting pedophiles who bought and consumed the content from the rings. But Ballard wanted to do more, as depicted in the film.

Before being released in 2023, Sound of Freedom struggled to be made ready for a theatrical release for many years. The script was written in 2015, and the filming finished in 2018. Then, the movie sat on the shelf for almost five years. Sound of Freedom was created to raise awareness about the difficult truths of child sex trafficking. However, the film jumped between studios, including a Disney-owned company, before the filmmakers could bring their story to life on the big screen.

Disney Acquired Sound Of Freedom After Purchasing Fox - So What Happened?

Following the conclusion of filming in 2018, the Sound of Freedom producers made a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox. The movie should have come out way before 2023, so what happened? The answer is the Walt Disney Company. Disney officially purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, meaning that the entertainment conglomerate also acquired all the studio's projects that were in development, including Sound of Freedom.

However, following the sale, Disney shelved Sound of Freedom. The producers then tried for many years to get the distribution rights to the movie back, and eventually, in March 2023, Angel Studios obtained the worldwide distribution rights and released the film in July of the same year. According to Newsweek, a Disney spokesperson commented on the matter and shared that a deal regarding Sound of Freedom's international distribution happened before Disney bought Fox. They said, "[Disney] studios had no knowledge of the film given the nature of the international acquisition pre-merger." Therefore, it got shelved, and the rest is history.

Why Sound Of Freedom Has Been So Successful After Years Of Delays

Sound of Freedom became a box office success just a week following its release and five years after filming finished. Despite the movie's many setbacks, the wait has evidently been worth it for the filmmakers and everyone involved. One of the main reasons for its triumph is its great word of mouth (people who have seen it and loved it are very passionate about the movie online). Plus, it caters to a specific faith-based and patriotic audience, so it was wise for Angel Studios to release Sound of Freedom on Independence Day in the United States.

For many, the increasing frequency of President Biden's bumbles, stumbles and moments where he appears confused and needs somebody to tell him what to do next are signs that there's no way he should be running for another term in the White House.

However, for Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," those are all signs that Biden needs a more attentive staff so the Republicans don't have so much video to pounce on:

Brzezinski's request to Biden's staff seems to be "make the 80-year-old in decline not appear to be an 80-year-old in decline" and that's quite a tall order.

The Biden re-election campaign now has their slogan: "You need to be there for him."

Scolding Biden's staff for not making Biden appear to be somebody other than Biden is something else.

Disney Crowd Sizes ‘Shockingly Low’ Amid Backlash (Connecting the Dots: Bob Iger, Walt Disney Company, ABC & Soros Funding, All Networking)

https://www.theepochtimes.com/disney-crowd-sizes-shockingly-low-amid-backlash_5385164.html?utm_source=News&src_src=News&utm_campaign=breaking-2023-07-11-1&src_cmp=breaking-2023-07-11-1&utm_medium=email

Walt Disney World crowd sizes over the July 4th long weekend were “shockingly” thin, according to tracking data provider Touring Plans, which predicted that the low-attendance trend seems poised to continue amid ongoing conservative backlash to what some describe as a woke agenda.

Disney has been embroiled in a legal and political fight with Florida governor Ron DeSantis which was triggered by the company’s opposition to a bill that bans discussing sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.

The company has also faced streaming losses and its stock was recently downgraded in part due to fears of lower attendance at its Disney World and Disneyland theme parks.

While Disney executives have said they expect weaker performance from their U.S. theme parks this year, the recent attendance numbers suggest reality could be even worse than pessimistic predictions.

“This is not normal. These are not peak summer crowds. These are shockingly low crowds,” wrote Becky Gandillion of Touring Plans in a blog post in which she detailed some of the dismal data.

‘Absolutely Crazy’

Touring Plans uses a 10-point scale to measure crowd size. The latest data show that June 27–29 scored a six on each of the days at Disney’s theme parks on average. This was followed by a crowd level five on June 30.

The numbers then plunged to a reading of two on July 1, rising to a three on July 2 and a four on July 3.

Some individual theme parks saw worse numbers than the average, with the EPCOT theme park at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida notching a crowd level one on July 1.

“This is madness in a chart. We have a park at a crowd level eight and a park at crowd level one just three days apart,” Gandillion wrote in commentary on the data. “We almost never see that, outside of party season at Magic Kingdom.”

“The crowds on July 1 and 2 look more like Labor Day than July 4th. This is absolutely crazy,” she added.

The unusually hot weather on some of the days may have been partly to blame, with a larger share of locals likely opting to stay home.

However, Touring Plans believes that Disney will continue to see sparse crowds going forward.

“Let’s face it. If this weekend didn’t turn crowds around at Walt Disney World … crowds aren’t going to turn around,” Gandillion wrote. “All signs point to this continuing in the short and long term.”

Disney did not return a request for comment from The Epoch Times.

Stock Downgrade Amid Backlash

Recent weeks have seen Disney’s stock hit with a downgrade amid fears of sluggish growth.

Investment company KeyBanc Capital Markets recently lowered Disney’s rating from overweight to sector weight.

“While Disney appears less expensive versus its historical average, we believe the stock is unlikely to work until a number of items have line of sight to being resolved,” analyst Brandon Nispel wrote, Barron’s reported.

Mr. Nispel touched on several areas of concern for Disney in the note, including sluggish subscriber growth, sagging content sales, and concerns over stagnating crowd sized at its U.S. theme parks.

As of July 10, Disney’s stock stood at about $88. Even after it brought back CEO Bob Iger in recent months, the company’s stock remains far below its early 2021 peak of $200 per share.

While Mr. Nispel made no mention of Disney’s wading into social issues, some consumers and conservative influencers have called for a boycott amid the company’s stance on a Florida law that prohibits teachers from instructing young children on transgender issues and sexuality.

Disney Embroiled in Controversy

Disney became embroiled in controversy when it pushed back against the introduction of Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill.

In March 2022, Florida lawmakers passed HB 1557, or the Parental Rights in Education act, which was signed into law by Mr. DeSantis on March 28 of that year.

The same day Mr. DeSantis signed the bill, Disney waded into the controversy, a statement that was highly critical of the measure and saying it was the company’s objective to have it repealed.

“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” the statement reads.

Disney stated at the time that it was the company’s goal “for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts.”

Supporters of the legislation have argued that it gives parents more power to decide how and when topics relating to LGBT issues can be introduced to their children. It also gives parents the opportunity to sue school districts for violating the rules set out in the legislation.

In the wake of the controversy, Mr. DeSantis ended a decades-long deal allowing Disney World to govern its vast Central Florida resort by itself. The Republican governor has explained that the action was aimed at holding Disney accountable.

“The corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” he said in February. “There’s a new sheriff in town, and accountability will be the order of the day.”

Expecting a package? American shipping giant could grind to a halt in just days

340,000 drivers on verge of strike

Labor union giant the International Brotherhood of Teamsters warns that if a deal is not reached in negotiations with the United Parcel Service soon, 340,000 drivers could strike.

The Teamsters, a labor union that boasts 1.2 million members and traditionally covers drivers, has been in talks with UPS in order to reach a deal on a new contract before the current contract expires on July 31, according to a press release from the Teamsters. The union demanded to UPS in a press conference Saturday that a deal must be reached soon, hinting that a strike could occur as soon as July 5 if demands for better pay, more full-time jobs and more safety considerations are not met, which would be the largest strike since the 1959 steelworkers strike, according to CBS News.

“Both sides have made commitments to get a historic deal done no later than July 5. If UPS fails on this pledge, they know what’s waiting for them. UPS will put itself on strike and force the supply chain in this country to come crashing down,” General President Sean O’Brien said in a press conference on Saturday.

UPS has maintained that it is in full cooperation and is working tirelessly to reach a deal with the Teamsters. “Last week, we provided our initial economic proposal. This week we followed with a significantly amended proposal to address key demands from the Teamsters,” UPS said in statements to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Reaching consensus requires time and serious, detailed discussion, but it also requires give-and-take from both sides. We’re working around the clock to reach an agreement that strengthens our industry-leading pay and benefits ahead of the current contract’s expiration on August 1. We remain at the table ready to negotiate.”

The shipping company as of Q1 2023 controls 52.73% of the market share within the U.S. transport and logistics industry, with its closest competitor, FedEx, having 46.11%, according to CSI Market.

UPS’ only other nationwide strike was in 1997, when 187,000 UPS workers went on strike, lasting 15 days and costing the company $780 million, according to trade publication Parcel.

The Teamsters have made their threats of strike very clear, giving an ultimatum on Tuesday after the union accused UPS of coming to negotiations “without a revised or respectful economic proposal in-hand.” The union told UPS that “you have one week” to bring a better deal.

“This is why there’s new leadership at the Teamsters. UPS isn’t working with the union’s prior administration, dragging out the bargaining process and submitting to extensions until finally agreeing to a watered-down deal months after the expiration of the contract,” said Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman in the press release. “This is what hard bargaining looks like. This is labor’s leverage, and the Teamsters are not afraid to use it.”

The threats of strike come as the Biden administration has been emphasizing its support for unions. President Joe Biden pledged to “be the most pro-union president you’ve ever seen” the night before the 2020 election and has taken pro-union actions like an April 2021 executive order to investigate how to increase union membership.

The Teamsters did not respond to a request to comment by the DCNF.

Ben & Jerry’s disgraceful July 4th message enrages America: ‘Make them Bud Light again’

BPR Business & Politics

July 5, 2023 | Terresa Monroe-Hamilton

https://www.bizpacreview.com/2023/07/05/ben-jerrys-disgraceful-july-4th-message-enrages-america-make-them-bud-light-again-1374120/

Once again, Ben & Jerry’s is roiling the American waters with radical leftist ideology by claiming on July 4th that the “US exists on stolen indigenous land,” enraging Americans with some calling for the ice cream company to get the Bud Light treatment by boycotting them.

“The United States was founded on stolen indigenous land. This Fourth of July, let’s commit to returning it,” Ben & Jerry’s tweeted on Independence Day.

The company also put the message on its website, contending that the celebration of Independence Day can “distract from an essential truth about this nation’s birth.”

This is a company that has bought into just about every radical leftist stance, including Black Lives Matter, abortion, climate change, defunding the police, and standing against Israel, actively promoting political issues through their ice cream.

The ice cream company proposed that we “start with Mount Rushmore,” adding, “But what is the meaning of Independence Day for those whose land this country stole, those who were murdered and forced with brutal violence onto reservations, those who were pushed from their holy places and denied their freedom.”

“The faces on Mount Rushmore are the faces of men who actively worked to destroy Indigenous cultures and ways of life, to deny Indigenous people their basic rights,” the lengthy statement continued.

“The Indigenous-led Land Back movement is all about restoring the rights and freedoms of Indigenous people. It’s about dismantling white supremacy and systems of oppression and ensuring that Indigenous people can again govern the land their communities called home for thousands of years,” the virtue signaling political statement concluded.

The ice cream company argued that the Supreme Court agreed with them by ostensibly ruling in 1980 that the land that Mount Rushmore was on was stolen from the Sioux tribe. The court awarded the Sioux $105 million in damages, but the tribes refused the payment.

“The US exists on stolen land. We have to acknowledge that — today and every day. In the case of Mount Rushmore, the Supreme Court already did!” Ben & Jerry’s wrote.

On its website, Ben & Jerry’s claims its social mission is to “eliminate injustices in our communities by integrating these concerns into our day-to-day business activities.”

Earlier in June, Ben & Jerry’s announced that they would not pay to advertise on Twitter with Elon Musk at the helm, ironically blaming what it says is a rise in “hate speech” on the platform since he took over restoring free speech. However, they still seem to be on the social media platform.

The message was not met with enthusiasm online. Many called for a boycott similar to the one Bud Light is experiencing after crawling into bed with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvany. That ill-considered move has cost the company billions.

Country singer John Rich is leading the way in calling for a boycott of the ice cream company.

“Make @benndjerrys Bud Light again,” the country star tweeted.
