House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told party members Friday that the future of the Democratic agenda to preserve abortion rights and restrict guns — the subjects of two landmark Supreme Court rulings this week — will depend on the midterm elections.

"Over the last two days, the Supreme Court has inflicted devastation on our nation: flooding our public spaces with more deadly weapons and erasing women’s fundamental right to make their own reproductive health decisions," Pelosi wrote in a letter to Democratic House members. 

The Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Friday overturned Roe v. Wade and its nearly 50 years of precedent protecting abortions as a constitutional right. On Thursday, SCOTUS ruled that New York City's ban on concealed carry permits was unconstitutional.

According to Pelosi, President Biden and other Democratic leaders, those two decisions cast a dark cloud over America and represent an erosion of human rights.

"The only way we can secure a woman’s right to choose in the balance it existed, is for Congress to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade as federal law," Biden said. Noting that Congress doesn’t have enough votes to do that, he called on Americans to vote for lawmakers in the midterms who would codify a right to have an abortion into federal law. 

"This fall, Roe is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to privacy, liberty, equality are all on the ballot," Biden said.

The Dobbs decision is just "Republicans’ opening act in their despicable crusade to punish and control women," Pelosi wrote in her Dear Colleagues letter, noting that former Vice President Mike Pence had called for "sanctity of life [to be] restored to the center of American law in every state in the land."

In his own opinion on the Dobbs decision, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Supreme Court should also consider other precedents that paved the way for decisions recognizing citizens' rights to privacy in using contraception (Griswold v. Connecticut) and gay marriage (Obergefell v. Hodges).

"We must ‘Remember in November’ that the rights of women, and indeed all Americans, are on the ballot," Pelosi said, promising to "continue to beat the drum – not only of what the challenges are, but what we as Democrats are doing about it."

Democrats face strong headwinds in the four and a half months before the November midterms, where they hope to keep slim majorities in the House and Senate. 

With Biden's dismal approval ratings, sky-high inflation and the cost of everything from gas to food increasing, Republicans are widely expected to do better in congressional races. And poll after poll has shown that the economy and inflation are the top issues among likely voters.

A Fox News poll released in May found that a slim majority of registered voters favor banning abortions after 15 weeks, while an earlier poll revealed that six in 10 registered voters favored the court upholding Roe v. Wade.

Critical Race Theory (CRT) is now being taught at West Point military academy.

Cadets at the rigorous academy in upstate New York are instructed that "whiteness" connotes "race privilege" and "structural advantage," according to newly revealed documents and course materials from the military academy, The Washington Times reported.

The documents were given to Judicial Watch after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit was filed amid reports that CRT was appearing in military training and recommended reading lists for service members and was being taught at the service academies.

Presentation slides at West Point instruct cadets that "in order to understand racial inequality and slavery, it is first necessary to address whiteness."
"Whiteness," the slide reads, is a "standpoint or place from which white people look at themselves and the rest of society," and refers to "a set of cultural practices that are usually unmarked and unnamed."
Another slide with a graphic that reads: "Modern Day Slavery In The USA" notes that Black people are less likely to "have a college education, receive recommended medical screening tests, receive bank approval for a housing mortgage, own their own homes or receive a job promotion."

A further presentation informs cadets that "racism is ordinary, race is socially constructed, and White Americans have primarily benefited from civil rights legislation."
The Department of Defense (DOD) divulged more than 600 pages of documents including presentation slides, course outlines, and emails exposing the extent of CRT instruction at West Point, The Washington Times reported.

"Our military is under attack — from within," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "These documents show racist, anti-American CRT propaganda is being used to try to radicalize our rising generation of Army leadership at West Point."

Rep. Mike Waltz, a Florida Republican, said the superintendent of West Point confirmed that the academy hosted a course that includes critical race theory and a seminar titled "Understanding Whiteness and White Rage" that was attended by more than 100 cadets.

The seminar was "taught by a woman who described the Republican Party and Republican Party platform [as] a platform of White supremacy."
CRT emerged at universities in the 1970s as a legal theory examining bias within institutions. The theory, which has evolved from a legal framework, asserts that a racial hierarchy exists in American society and that racism has become normalized.

The theory says that racism is part of everyday life, so people — white or nonwhite — who don’t intend to be racist can nevertheless make choices that fuel racism.

Some critics claim that the theory advocates discriminating against white people in order to achieve equity, according to Education Week.

That’s a question consumers need to weigh as they consider genome testing.

Companies in this space, including 23andMe, Veritas Genetics and Ancestry, have a good reason to protect your DNA — their business future depends on maintaining the trust of consumers. But there are thorny issues related to genetic privacy that still today don’t have easy answers or iron-clad legislative protections. And regulators aren’t convinced they are doing right by consumers. A recent Fast Company report indicates that 23andMe and Ancestry are being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission over their policies for handling personal info and genetic data and how they share that info with third parties.

“The key thing about your genetic data ... it is uniquely yours. It identifies you, so if you are going to entrust it to a company, you should try to understand what the consequences are,” said Jennifer King, director of consumer privacy at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society, whose research on the issue and interviews with individuals shows a lack of consumer knowledge.

Ancestry.com LLC is an American genealogy company based in Lehi, Utah. The largest for-profit genealogy company in the world, it operates a network of genealogical, historical records, and related genetic genealogy websites.

In November 2018, the company claimed to provide access to approximately 10 billion historical records, to have 3 million paying subscribers, and to have sold 18 million DNA kits to customers.^[4] By 2022, this number had risen to 30 billion records according to the company.^[5] On December 4, 2020, The Blackstone Group acquired the company in a deal valued at $4.7 billion.

As a Supreme Court case involving a former Washington high school football coach and religious liberty awaits its fate, Sports Illustrated came under fire Monday for a tweet about the situation.

The sports magazine tweeted its daily cover featuring former Bremerton High School Joseph Kennedy kneeling in front of the Supreme Court.

"SCOTUS will soon rule on the case of a public school football coach who wants to pray on-field after games," the tweet read. "@GregBishopSI on Joe Kennedy, the machine backing him and the expected result: a win for Kennedy and an erosion of a bedrock of American democracy."

Rep. Yvette Herrell, R-N.M., was among the Twitter users who took issue with the tweet.

"Sports Illustrated seems to be under the impression that coaches and players praying on the field spells the end of American democracy," Herrell wrote. "If that were true, American democracy would have been destroyed long before the legendary Jim Thorpe threw his first pigskin."
