Cornell University: Antisemitic threats to our community

https://statements.cornell.edu/2023/20231029-antisemitic-threats.cfm

University Statements

Oct. 29, 2023

Dear members of the Cornell community,

Earlier today, a series of horrendous, antisemitic messages threatening violence to our Jewish community and specifically naming 104 West — the home of the Center for Jewish Living — was posted on a website unaffiliated with Cornell. Law enforcement was immediately notified.

At this time, Cornell Police (CUPD) are on the scene and investigating. Police will continue to remain on site to ensure our students and community members are safe.

Cornell Police have also notified the FBI of a potential hate crime.

Threats of violence are absolutely intolerable, and we will work to ensure that the person or people who posted them are punished to the full extent of the law. Our immediate focus is on keeping the community safe; we will continue to prioritize that.

We will not tolerate antisemitism at Cornell. During my time as president, I have repeatedly denounced bigotry and hatred, both on and off our campus. The virulence and destructiveness of antisemitism is real and deeply impacting our Jewish students, faculty and staff, as well as the entire Cornell community. This incident highlights the need to combat the forces that are dividing us and driving us toward hate. This cannot be what defines us at Cornell.

All of our community deserves to feel safe at Cornell. If you become aware of any threats to your safety or to the safety of the community, please contact CUPD at 607-255-1111. We also encourage you to download the RAVE Guardian app, which will enable you to report any safety concerns to CUPD in real time.

In the days ahead, we will work to reinforce a culture of trust, respect and safety at Cornell. Regardless of your beliefs, backgrounds or perspectives, I urge all of you to come together with the empathy and support for each other that we so greatly need in this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Martha E. Pollack
President

Google’s Eric Schmidt talks about how to run the world (not that he wants to)

https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/technology-blog/story/2008-06-09/googles-eric-schmidt-talks-about-how-to-run-the-world-not-that-he-wants-to

This article was originally on a blog post platform and may be missing photos, graphics or links. See About archive blog posts.

Despite its famous motto of ‘Don’t be evil,’ there are some in the dark corners of the Web who speculate that Google’s real plan is to take over the world. Google Watch features headlines such as ‘Google Must be Stopped,’ and ‘Is Google God?’ The site Google World Domination even has a countdown clock, which indicates that the Skynet-type moment when we will all be slaves to the mighty Google algorithms will take place in roughly 6 years and 192 days. (Interestingly, the site, which includes a creepy video, features ads by Google, demonstrating how insidious that plot actually might be).

With that type of speculation out there, it’s news any time a Google executive talks about running the world.

And that’s exactly what Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt did today, sort of.

He didn’t say that Google wanted to run the world. But he did offer an interesting suggestion to a crowd of power players in Washington about the best way to do it: Just like Google.

‘It is possible to build a culture around innovation. It is possible to build a culture around leadership. And it is possible to build a culture around optimism. Google is an example, but by no means the only example, of a culture that can be built based on relatively scalable principles. We could run our country this way. We could run the world this way.’

It was meant to be an inspiring moment ...

...as Schmidt wrapped up a speech to the Economic Club of Washington during a luncheon in a packed ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton HotelClick here for an audio clip of Schmidt’s comments.

The appearance was a homecoming of sorts for Schmidt. Vernon E. Jordan Jr., the club’s president and a former President Clinton advisor, noted that Schmidt was born a few blocks away from the hotel at George Washington University Hospital, and grew up in the Northern Virginia suburbs. His mother, Ellie Schmidt, was in the audience.

Schmidt talked about cloud computing and the promise of mobile devices, all the while plugging some Google products. For the journalists sitting in the back of the room (no lunch of seared beef filet with Cabernet reduction and lemon and thyme glazed salmon filet for us), Schmidt did commisserate about the state of the newspaper industry.

‘We all care a lot about this. Newspaper demand has never been higher. The problem is revenues have never been lower. So people are reading the newspaper they’re just not reading it in a way where the newspapers can make money on it. This is a shared problem. We have to solve it. There’s no obviously good solution right now.’

One possible solution some have have floated has been for Google to use a sliver of its approximately $175 billion market cap to buy a newspaper, such as the New York Times, but Schmidt recently downplayed such an idea.

Like many Silicon Valley executives who come to Washington, Schmidt spoke broadly about technology (his speech was titled, ‘The Future of the Internet: Engine for Economic Growth’) and did his best not to make any major news. He didn’t even come close to mentioning Yahoo, let alone comment on the possibility of Google cutting a deal to place ads next to Yahoo’s search results.

Schmidt opted to talk less about the nuts-and-bolts of one of the world’s largest companies than the ways in which technology can shape the future. Noting that the United States was founded ‘by people who saw a better model,’ Schmidt concluded his speech with this call to arms:

‘So let’s be revolutionaries. Let’s take this opportunity, this huge change that is before us, with technlology, and let’s change businesses, communications and the way we interact, on some new principles that reflect the very best of America.

Those sound like the words of someone who might be considering a run for higher office one day, assuming Google isn’t running everything by then.

Why Obama sent the Palestinians $221 million during his last hours in office

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/why-obama-quietly-sent-palestine-222755112.html

On Monday the Associated Press reported that as one of Barack Obama's final actions in office before the inauguration of President Donald Trump, he released $221 million to the Palestinian Authority.

However, the payment itself has been frozen by the State Department under President Trump.

The money came from federal aid the US provides to the West Bank and Gaza, aid that totaled about $355 million in 2015. The sum released by Obama during his last hours in office had been held up by a group in Congress that included Reps. Ed Royce of California and Kay Granger of Texas.

"The easiest way to sum it up is that Congress had been looking at various behaviors from Palestine — unilateral attempts at statehood, corruption, incitement of violence, and paying salaries to people in jail for terrorism — and that's why the hold has been there," Dr. Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told Business Insider.

Schanzer characterized the move by Obama as both shocking and "a strange message to send."

For more news videos visit Yahoo View, available now on iOS and Android.

"I was tracking President Obama's 11th-hour moves on the Palestinians, and this issue never came up once ... Most analysts and observers didn't think Obama would or could do this," Schanzer said.

The Obama administration had been pressing for the release of the funds for some time, according to the Associated Press, which reported that a notification sent to Congress said the money came from the US Agency for International Development and was set to support humanitarian aid, political and security reforms, and "rule of law."

The Palestinian Authority, which had been had been hurting for cash, used the money for "salaries unpaid and debts that are owed," Schanzer said.

Schanzer, however, said the Palestinian Authority had done nothing to warrant this reversal on Obama's part, characterizing activities such as corruption and incitement of violence as "ongoing."

Mahmoud Abbas Yasser Arafat

Schanzer pointed to the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, as an example of corruption. Abbas entered his 12th year as president this year, despite being elected to only a four-year term in 2005.

Obama is "releasing funds to a guy that’s become an autocrat," Schanzer said.

Obama's unilateral action came as he closed his presidency with a critical eye toward Israel. In December, the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding that Israel stop building settlements on Palestinian land. The US refused to vote on the resolution, effectively allowing it to pass.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of moving the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, which Abbas has urged against.

Ann Williams: An Open Letter to Oprah Winfrey

palestinechronicle.com

June 9, 2007 Articles

https://www.palestinechronicle.com/ann-williams-an-open-letter-to-oprah-winfrey/

Dear Oprah,
An enthusiastic "Thank You" seems an ineffective expression for all the positive effect your life and work has generated within the culture, especially on social justice issues of illiteracy, universal health care and resistance to racism and oppression for people everywhere.
Oprah, you have a unique gift of empathy and Americans have had the sense for several years that you are open-minded to seek out and process alternative information in order to understand all sides of an equation. It is in this spirit that I respectfully ask you to reconsider your position on your pending trip to Israel.
Imagine this: If you woke up one sunny morning (recall Sept. 11) and saw armored military tanks of a foreign invader pounding loudly through the streets of Chicago, you would be stunned. Visualize how horrific that would be. If we were continually attacked here in our streets and neighborhoods of America, and forced to suffer under an illegal military occupation for years on end, we would be resentful, angry, and naturally resist, as is our human right. The recurrent horror of Sept. 11 takes place on a smaller scale daily in the Occupied Territories, in Iraq and around the globe at the behest of a US-sponsored War Machine. Water, jobs, health care and other resources are intentionally with-held by Zionists, who differ drastically from peace-oriented Israelis. People in Gaza and the West Bank are beaten, humiliated and/or killed daily by Israeli soldiers with US-made weapons. Many who do survive are parlayzed for life. All for no good reason–merely money, power, "security" and control. Things which are illusions, anyway.
Statistics have shown that for every one Israeli killed, four Palestinians, including women and children, are killed. The trauma endured by the victims of apartheid in S. Africa is parallel to the current situation in the Occupied Territories. Human rights are non-negotiable, no matter what era or location.
Similar atrocities took place in Lebanon during the the summer invasion by Israel last year. The true origins of the devestation was hidden from the world by a complicit, corporatized press. Dr. Noam Chomsky of MIT has stated that "Israel is America’s client state."
Forty years of needless suffering and direct occupational oppression by the US-sponsored Israeli state armed with US-manufactured weapons– including countless firearms, F-16 machine guns, Apache helicopters, fighter jets and Catapiller bulldozers which are shockingly used to violently level Palestinian homes, infrastructure and olive trees, destroying a formerly viable way of living.
Since 1948, the Palestinian people people have been terrorized on a daily basis and intentionally prevented from progressing in a meaningful direction or having a reasonable quality of life on land that they shared in peace at one time with those of Hebrew origins. In fact, up until 1948, Palestinians and Israelis lived side-by-side in relative co-existance. This is something rarely communicated to the world due to the focus on negative aspects by the mainstream Western press. With mainstream press often sanitized, distorted and corrupt, I hope you can review Independent Media sources such as www.democracynow.org (Pacifica radio network), www.palestinechronicle.com  , www.truthout.org  and www.palestinemonitor.org. for the other side of the story. The US supplies more US aid to one of the smallest countries–Israel– than any other entity on earth. Billions more. And still, there is no peace, no "security"??? Because it is impossible to attain under these inhumane circumstances.
Myself and many others–sincerely hope you will take the time and energy to visit the Occupied Territories on the same trip to Israel and gain clarity about the Truth based on allowing both sides of the narrative to be told. Suffering on all sides must cease if there is to ever be any peace in the Middle East. It is imperative that you courageously bear witness to that which has been mostly hidden from the rest of the world.
Sincerely,
Ann V. Williams

Democrats, leftists rely on disgraced SPLC group to smear Speaker Mike Johnson

Repeats Palestinian propaganda after terror attack in Israel

By Peter LaBarbera

Published October 26, 2023 at 9:17pm

https://www.wnd.com/2023/10/democrats-leftists-rely-disgraced-splc-group-smear-speaker-mike-johnson/

Democrats, leftists and media opposed to new House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., are using the notorious, far-left group Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and its discredited "hate" designation to tar Johnson as being affiliated with a supposed "hate group," which is actually a leading Christian conservative legal defense organization.

Johnson worked as an attorney for Alliance Defending Freedom, formerly the Alliance Defense Fund, which the SPLC has smeared as a "hate group" – mainly due to ADF's longstanding opposition to homosexuality and the transgender agenda.

As Daily Signal reported Thursday, "Leftist groups and one of Johnson’s Democratic colleagues in the House noted his history as a lawyer with Alliance Defense Fund, now known as Alliance Defending Freedom. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which gained its reputation by suing Ku Klux Klan groups into bankruptcy, has branded ADF a 'hate group,' placing it on a 'hate map' alongside Klan chapters."

Democrat Representative Judy Chu, representing California's 28th Congressional District, blasted Johnson on X Wednesday as he was on his way to being elected Speaker of the House. Her Oct. 25 X post stated: "MAGA Extremist Mike Johnson is not fit to lead the House of Representatives. He: - led efforts to overturn 2020 election, helping fuel the January 6 insurrection; - wants to criminalize abortions nationwide; - worked previously for an @splcenter[SPLC]-identified hate group." Chu's post was accompanied by a video of Johnson assailing Roe vs. Wade for leading to the loss of millions of future workers through abortion-on-demand:

MAGA Extremist Mike Johnson is not fit to lead the House of Representatives. He: - led efforts to overturn 2020 election, helping fuel the January 6 insurrection - wants to criminalize abortions nationwide - worked previously for an

@splcenter

-identified hate group

The left-biased Guardian repeated the SPLC "hate" smear in its reporting on Johnson:

What do you need to know about Speaker Mike Johnson? He wrote an amicus brief to throw out 2020 election results, voted to overturn the results of the election, and worked for Alliance Defending Freedom – designated a hate group by the SPLC.

SPLC's tactic of "designating" various conservative organizations as "hate groups" to advance the Left's political and cultural narratives has come under withering criticism in recent years as many millions of Americans who follow conservative media and social media were educated on the group's radicalism and highly political nature.

(Editor's note: Years ago, this reporter's organization, Americans For Truth, which opposes the LGBT agenda, was one of the first pro-family, socially conservative groups to be mislabeled a "hate" group by the SPLC. The leftist group's "reporting" was so slipshod that in 2010 the author of one SPLC report mistook this writer for Paul Cameron, another socially conservative researcher whose first name also begins with "P.")

If anything, despite the massive blowback in recent years against SPLC's spurious "hate" designations, the Alabama-based "anti-hate" organization has only expanded its web of conservative organizations maligned as "hate groups." For example, in the MSNBC interview below, SPLC CEO Margaret Huang discusses how the SPLC added "Mom For Liberty," a national grassroots organization of moms (and dads) opposing leftist "critical race theory" and pro-LGBT and pro-transgender propaganda targeting young children in schools as a "hate" group:

Great to join @DeadlineWH today for a discussion of @splcenter's new Year in Hate and Extremism report. We are lifting up how hate has moved into the local arena, targeting schools and students, doctors' offices, libraries and other public spaces.

Moms For Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler dismissed the SPLC labeling it and 11 other groups "anti-government extremist groups": "Outside of it being a leftist attack, political hit job, there's no credibility behind it. It's truly laughable," Florida-based Ziegler told USA Today in June. Ziegler is the chair of the Sarasota School Board.

USA Today reported: "In 2018 the SPLC paid $3.38 million and issued public apologies to Maajid Nawazan, an Islamic activist and the founder of the Quilliam Foundation, to avoid a defamation lawsuit after the SPLC labeled him and others as 'anti-Muslim extremists.'"

Predictably, the dominant corporate media used loaded terms like "ultra conservative" to describe Johnson, the media watchdog group Media Research Center reports. In contrast, words like "ultra-liberal" are rarely used by "mainstream" journalists:

ABC, CBS, and NBC blasted new Speaker @RepMikeJohnson as a “hardline,” “hard-right,” “ultra-conservative” who’s “staunchly anti-abortion.”

Left-watcher Andy Ngo sent out an X post Monday revealing the radicalism of the SPLC's union, which in its own series of X posts Oct. 18 echoed radical Palestinian propaganda despite Hamas terrorists' wanton slaughter of Israeli citizens:

https://twitter.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1716615687060246563

Scarlett Johnson noted that the SPLC Union's post stressed that Palestinian "lives matter," but made no similar assertion for Israelis' and Jewish lives, even though theirs had just been savagely brutalized and murdered by Hamas terrorists in their Oct. 7 slaughter of unsuspecting civilians:

The union for far-left "hate watch" group SPLC has released a statement condemning Israel and demanding it surrender to the terrorist groups that operate in the Palestinian territories. The SPLC under its current leadership has forged close ties with Antifa & the extreme far-left. One of its staffers is a domestic terror suspect in Georgia indicted on RICO charges. Another one last week was revealed to have helped the pro-Palestine insurrection at a U.S. capitol building.

The Walter E. Fernald State School, later the Walter E. Fernald Developmental Center, was the Western hemisphere's oldest publicly funded institution serving people with developmental disabilities.[2][3] Originally a Victorian sanatorium, it became a "poster child" for the American eugenics movement during the 1920s. It later was the scene of medical experiments in the 20th century. Investigations into this research led to new regulations regarding human research in children.

The school occupies a 186 acres (75 ha) property off Trapelo Road in Waltham, Massachusetts.

History

Early history[edit]

The Fernald Center, originally called the Experimental School for Teaching and Training Idiotic Children,[4][5] was founded in Boston by reformer Samuel Gridley Howe in 1848 with a $2,500 appropriation from the Massachusetts State Legislature. The school gradually moved to a new permanent location in Waltham between 1888 and 1891. It would eventually comprise 72 buildings total, located on 196 acres (0.79 km2). At its peak, some 2,500 people were confined there, most of them "feeble-minded" boys.

Under its third superintendent, Walter E. Fernald (1859–1924), an advocate of eugenics, the school was viewed as a model educational facility in the field of mental retardation. It was renamed in his honor in 1925, following his death the previous year. The institution was involved in several different procedures that used the residents as test subjects, some of which included sterilization and radiation experimentation.

The institution did serve a large population of children with cognitive disabilities (referred to as "mentally retarded children"), but The Boston Globe estimates that upwards of half of the inmates tested with IQs in the normal range. In the 20th century, living conditions were spartan or worse; approximately 36 children slept in each dormitory room. There were also reports of physical and sexual abuse.[6]

Nuclear medicine research in children

The Fernald School was the site of the 1946–53 joint experiments by Harvard University and MIT that exposed young male children to tracer doses of radioactive isotopes.[7] Documents obtained in 1994 by the United States Department of Energy[8] revealed the following details:

·         The experiment was conducted in part by a research fellow sponsored by the Quaker Oats Company.

·         MIT Professor of Nutrition Robert S. Harris led the experiment, which studied the absorption of calcium and iron.

·         The boys were encouraged to join a "Science Club", which offered larger portions of food, parties, and trips to Boston Red Sox baseball games.

·         The 57 club members ate iron-enriched cereals and calcium-enriched milk for breakfast. In order to track absorption, several radioactive calcium tracers were given orally or intravenously.

·         Radiation levels in stool and blood samples would serve as dependent variables.

·         In another study, 17 subjects received iron supplement shots containing radioisotopes of iron.[9]

·         Neither the children nor their parents ever gave adequate informed consent for participation in a scientific study.

The Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments, reporting to the United States Department of Energy in 1994, reported on these experiments:[10]

In 1946, one study exposed seventeen subjects to radioactive iron. The second study, which involved a series of seventeen related subexperiments, exposed fifty-seven subjects to radioactive calcium between 1950 and 1953. It is clear that the doses involved were low and that it is extremely unlikely that any of the children who were used as subjects were harmed as a consequence. These studies remain morally troubling, however, for several reasons. First, although parents or guardians were asked for their permission to have their children involved in the research, the available evidence suggests that the information provided was, at best, incomplete. Second, there is the question of the fairness of selecting institutionalized children at all, children whose life circumstances were by any standard already heavily burdened.

It has been claimed that the highest dose of radiation that any subject was exposed to was 330 millirem, the equivalent of less than one year's background radiation in Denver.[11] A 1995 class-action suit resulted in a 1998 District court decision awarding the victims a $1.85 million settlement from MIT and Quaker.[11]

The school also participated in studies of thyroid function in patients with Down Syndrome and their parents.[12] This study showed that their iodine metabolism was similar to normal controls.

Reform lawsuit

This situation changed in the 1970s, when a class action suit, Ricci v. Okin, was filed to upgrade conditions at Fernald and several other state institutions for persons with intellectual disability in Massachusetts. U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Louis Tauro, who assumed oversight of the case in 1972, formally disengaged from the case in 1993, declaring that improvements in the care and conditions at the facilities had made them "second to none anywhere in the world". A result for Fernald residents of the class action suit which took effect in 1993 was the provision of "a guaranteed level of care, regardless of cost, to compensate for decades of neglect and abuse".[3]

Twenty-first century

The buildings and grounds survived into the 2000s as a center for mentally disabled adults, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation. In 2001, 320 adults resided at Fernald, with ages ranging from 27 to 96 years and an average age of 47 years. According to a December 13, 2004 article in the Boston Globe, Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney announced in 2003 that the facility would be closed and the land sold by 2007. In 2003, a coalition of family advocates and state employee unions began a campaign to save Fernald and asked Judge Tauro to resume his oversight of the "Ricci v. Okin" class action lawsuit that had led to improvements at Fernald and the other state facilities beginning in the 1970s.

In an August 14, 2007 ruling, Judge Tauro ordered the Department of Mental Retardation to consider the individual wishes of all 185 institution residents before closing the facility. However, in September 2007, the new administration of Governor Deval Patrick appealed Tauro's ruling to the First Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston. In a statement, the Patrick administration contended that Fernald had become too expensive to continue to operate and that equal or better care could be provided in private, community-based settings for the remaining Fernald residents. The administration's cost claims have been disputed by the Fernald League for the Retarded, Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition of Families and Advocates for the Retarded, Inc. (COFAR) and other family-based organizations, which have continued to advocate for the preservation of Fernald as a site for ICF/MR-level care for its current residents. Those advocacy organizations proposed a "postage-stamp" plan under which Fernald would be scaled back in size and the remaining portion of the campus sold for development. The Patrick administration, however, declined to negotiate with those Fernald advocates, and pressed ahead with its appeal and closure plans.

A significant portion of the Waltham campus, encompassing its facilities established through Fernald's tenure, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.[13] Fernald was the subject of a 2005 documentary film "Front Wards, Back Wards" directed by W.C. Rogers, which has been shown on some PBS television stations.[14][15]

As of June 2013, Fernald remained open with 13 residents living on grounds, the oldest of whom was 84 years old and a resident since the age of 19.[3] It was reported to cost approximately US$1,000,000 per client per year, or about four times the United States national average for a state-supported institution.

The Fernald Center's last resident was discharged on Thursday, November 13, 2014,[16][17] after a protracted legal and political battle which cost the Commonwealth of Massachusetts over $40 million in additional costs over the projected closure date of 2010. Remaining residents were integrated into community services or other state-operated programs.[18] In 2014 the land was purchased by the city of Waltham in two parcels, 139 acres for $2.7 million paid out of Community Preservation Act funds, and 40 acres for $800,000 of city funds. The CPA section may only be used for open space, recreation, or historic preservation. The 40 acre portion has no restrictions for future use.[19] There was a period of discussion about building a new high school for Waltham on a section of the site,[20][21] but eventually the proposal was discarded due to difficult topography, potential soil contamination, and a denial of approval from the Massachusetts Historical Commission related to the demolition of certain buildings on the site.[22]

Current status

In May 2017 and 2018, the Waltham Lions Club held a fundraising carnival on the grounds with rides, games, prizes, a petting zoo and food.[23][24]

In November/December 2020 and 2021, the site became the home of the Greater Boston Lights Show, a fundraiser for the Waltham Lions Club chapter.[25] The decision to host a holiday lights display at this location angered disability rights advocates.[26]

In December 2021, the Waltham Recreation Department held an online meeting to collect public input for potential recreational development on the Fernald property.[27] While many suggestions were made around walking paths, gardens, and other passive recreation facilities, the majority of the meeting focused on the need to honor and respect the history of Fernald and the treatment of the residents.[28]

As of 2021, despite at times considering use of the property as a high school or police station or for recreational development, it remains vacant except for these special events.[29] Many proposals have been made to the Waltham city council for various uses, but most have been tabled.[30] A number of residential buildings have been removed and wetlands restoration work has taken place in the northwest corner of the property.

Glyphosate, the key ingredient in RoundUp pesticide, has now been found in significant amounts in popular food brands according to two different toxicology studies.

We’re talking about popular foods from some of the largest food brands, including Quaker, Doritios, Kelloggs and Back to Nature. Yes, some of theses are brands that position their branded foods as natural, yet they have been found to contain hundreds of PPBs (parts per million). This is a significant amount according to food scientists, as we’ll discuss.
