Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, a key figure in shaping U.S. foreign policy during the late 20th century, has died at the age of 100.

Mr. Kissinger died at his home in Connecticut on Wednesday, according to Kissinger Associates, Inc.

A German-born American diplomat, he served as secretary of state for two presidents. While serving under Republican President Richard Nixon in the 1970s, Mr. Kissinger played a key role in many significant global events.

Mr. Kissinger, who met with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Xi Jinping during a surprise visit to Beijing on July 20, was instrumental in engineering the opening of relations between the CCP and Washington under President Nixon during the Cold War in the early 1970s.

His efforts also led to U.S.-Soviet arms control talks, expanded ties between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and the 1973 Paris Peace Accords, leading to the end of the Vietnam War and ultimately the communist takeover two years later.

President Nixon brought Mr. Kissinger to the White House as national security adviser after winning the 1968 presidential election on the promise of ending the Vietnam War. That process was long and bloody.

While many praised Mr. Kissinger, others labeled him a war criminal due to his realpolitik support for authoritarian regimes, particularly in Latin America. In 1973, the United States supported a coup in Chile that ousted President Salvador Allende and led to the establishment of the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Similar support was extended to other regimes with questionable human rights records.

Mr. Kissinger's prominence as the prime architect of U.S. foreign policy diminished with President Nixon's resignation in 1974. Despite this, he remained a diplomatic force under President Gerald Ford and continued to express strong opinions until his recent passing.

Mr. Kissinger remained active well beyond his centenary, participating in White House meetings, publishing a book on leadership styles, testifying before a Senate committee on the nuclear threat from North Korea, and visiting CCP leaders in Beijing in July.

In his later years, the former U.S. diplomat faced restrictions on his travels as other nations sought to question or arrest him regarding past U.S. foreign policy decisions.

President Gerald Ford, who referred to Mr. Kissinger as a "super secretary of state," also acknowledged his prickly demeanor and self-assurance, which critics viewed as paranoia and egotism. President Ford once remarked that Mr. Kissinger "had the thinnest skin of any public figure I ever knew."

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who served under former President Donald Trump, paid his respects to Mr. Kissinger on Wednesday.

"From the day he came to the United States as a teenager fleeing Nazi Germany, Dr. Kissinger dedicated his life to serving this great country and keeping America safe," Mr. Pompeo said

"He left an indelible mark on America's history and the world. I will always be grateful for his gracious advice and help during my own time as Secretary," he continued. "Always supportive and always informed, his wisdom made me better and more prepared after every one of our conversations."

Born Heinz Alfred Kissinger on May 27, 1923, in Furth, Germany, Mr. Kissinger relocated to the United States with his family in 1938 to escape the Nazi campaign targeting European Jews for extermination.

He anglicized his name to Henry and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War Two and later attended Harvard University on a scholarship. He earned a master's degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1954, subsequently joining Harvard's faculty, where he remained for the next 17 years.

Light the World Giving Machines bring together local, national, and international charities – including CARE – to raise money for those who need it most.

New York (November 28, 2023) — On the eve of Giving Tuesday, Light the World Giving Machines returned to NYC with a community kick off event and official “unwrapping” in Times Square. The Light the World Giving Machines, inaugurated in 2017, are a charitable initiative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, creating a way to provide help to others in local communities around the world and during the holiday season.

CARE was selected to be one of nine global charities to participate this year in the Light the World event. At the kick off, CARE and the other featured charities were invited to describe how donations through the Giving Machines would be used to improve people’s lives.

“Latter-day Saint Charities has been a committed partner of CARE’s since 1985, and together we’ve worked to help uplift so many across the world through the global CARE network,” said Caroline Blayney, CARE USA, Executive Director, Philanthropy East, who represented CARE at the event. “I am honored to be here today during this season of giving to celebrate the Light the World Giving Machine campaign alongside these wonderful organizations, all doing so much good in the world at a time when hope and compassion are needed most. The Light the World Giving Machines provide meaningful ways to support our work, so that individuals can live with dignity with access to economic opportunities, food and nutritional security, as well as essential humanitarian assistance.”

With the swipe of a credit card and the push of a button, passersby can give back with the “purchase” from a selection of dozens of charitable items, ranging from chickens to polio vaccines to clean water, and so much more. When donors make their purchase, the Giving Machine dispenses a postcard featuring an image and description of their gift. 100% of all donations go directly to each participating charitable organization, as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covers all expenses associated with the initiative, including credit card transaction fees.

Three different CARE donation options will be available at the NYC Giving Machines:

·         For $25, you can purchase Two Chickens as well as tools and training for families in places like Benin to establish a thriving poultry business that will support them for years to come.

·         For $29, you can purchase Vegetable Seeds to be planted on half an acre of land to provide a family with healthy vegetables and nourishment.

·         For $140, you can provide Refugee Support for one displaced family in need. This includes food, shelter, hygiene items, blankets, and other supplies.

The New York City Giving Machines moved from Times Square to The Church of Our Saviour, at 59 Park Ave. (at 38th St.) on November 28, 2023, where they will stay until the end of the year.

In addition to NYC, Giving Machines can be found in 40 other US cities, and 14 international cities. This is nearly double the number of cities compared to the 2022 campaign. Since 2017, the Giving Machines campaign has raised more than $22 million for charities.

Putin Pictured in Hell on The Economist Cover

By The Moscow Times

Dec. 20, 2012

The cartoon's accompanying article, which is presented as a travel guide, says the quickest way to hell is by constantly committing major sins without giving in to feelings of remorse.

https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2012/12/20/putin-pictured-in-hell-on-the-economist-cover-a20348

President Vladimir Putin was pictured in hell on the cover of The Economist's last issue for 2012, floating along in a fiery river with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and the euro under the heading "A rough guide to Hell."

The issue, set to hit newsstands Dec. 22, also shows U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the cartoon, with the former speeding along toward Putin in a motorboat and the latter looking sad as she sits on railway tracks above the River Styx.

The devil is pictured watching over the whole chaotic scene with a copy of The Economist in his hands.

The cartoon's accompanying article, which is presented as a travel guide, says the quickest way to hell is by constantly committing major sins without giving in to feelings of remorse.

The Economist ranked Russia 102nd out of 162 countries in its democracy rating back in 2006, during Putin's second term as president, concluding that elections were carried out under strict government control, press freedom was limited, and civil liberties were only partially observed.

At the time, the magazine predicted that Russia's democratic credentials would only get worse.

Reactions to the death of Rosalynn Carter, former first lady and global humanitarian:

___

Former President George W. Bush called Carter a woman of dignity and strength. “There was no greater advocate of President Carter, and their partnership set a wonderful example of loyalty and fidelity. She leaves behind an important legacy in her work to destigmatize mental health. We join our fellow citizens in sending our condolences to President Carter and their family,” Bush said in a statement with former first lady Laura Bush.

___

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia said Carter would be remembered for her compassionate nature and passion for women’s rights, human rights and mental health reform. “The State of Georgia and the United States are better places because of Rosalynn Carter," Ossoff said in a statement. “I join all Georgians and Americans in mourning her loss. May Rosalynn Carter’s memory be a blessing.”

___

Former President Donald Trump said Carter “earned the admiration and gratitude” of the nation. “From her days as a U.S. Navy spouse, to the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, to her tenure as First Lady of the United States, and her later work at the Carter Center and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, she leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary accomplishment and national service,” Trump said on Truth Social.

In a separate statement, former first lady Melania Trump said Carter leaves behind a meaningful legacy. “We will always remember her servant’s heart and devotion to her husband, family, and country. May she rest in peace,” Melania Trump said on X, formerly Twitter.

___

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Carter was a “saintly and revered public servant” driven by faith, compassion and kindness. “On the world stage, First Lady Carter was a pioneer. Her historic, high-stakes diplomatic mission to Latin America in 1977 ushered in a new era of engagement in the region. Two years later, she became the first sitting First Lady to address the World Health Organization, where she argued that mental health was an aspect of physical health – and that health is a human right,” Pelosi said in a statement offering condolences to the Carter family.

___

Bill and Hillary Clinton called Carter a champion of human dignity. “Thanks to her mental health advocacy, more people live with better care and less stigma. Because of her early leadership on childhood immunization, millions of Americans have grown up healthier. And through her decades of work at the Carter Center and with Habitat for Humanity, she spread hope, health, and democracy across the globe,” the former president and former secretary of state said in a joint statement. “Rosalynn will be forever remembered as the embodiment of a life lived with purpose.”

___

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens called Carter “the model for the modern day First Lady” and praised her work promoting mental health awareness. “She never stopped advocating for mental health or the Equal Rights Amendment,” Dickens said in a statement. "The city of Atlanta joins all of Georgia — and mourners around the world — as we honor the memory of First Lady Rosalynn Carter.”

___

Habitat For Humanity, the Georgia-based charity that the Carters worked for tirelessly, said its members were saddened by the former first lady's passing. “She was a compassionate and committed champion of #HabitatforHumanity and worked fiercely to help families around the world,” the group said on X.

___

Carter's legacy will be a source of pride for her home state, said U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, the chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Georgia Democrats join our entire state, nation, and the world in mourning the loss of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter – an extraordinary humanitarian, fierce mental health advocate, and beloved daughter of Georgia," Williams said.

__

The Carter Center said it was grieving the passing of its co-founder. “She was a partner in good deeds with her husband, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, as they traversed the globe to strengthen democracy, resolve conflicts, advance human rights, and eliminate debilitating diseases after their time in the White House,” the center said in a statement. In lieu of flowers, Carter requested that those wishing to honor her memory do so through contributions to the Carter Center’s Mental Health Program or the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, the statement said.

X Sues Media Matters After Report of Ads Next to Antisemitic Content

Newsmax.com

Monday, November 20, 2023

https://www.newsmax.com/us/nazis/2023/11/20/id/1143016/

Messaging platform X on Monday sued media watchdog group Media Matters, alleging the organization defamed the platform after it published a report that said ads for major brands had appeared next to posts touting Nazism.

X, formerly Twitter, has faced growing outrage since Media Matters published the report on Thursday, which led IBM, Comcast and several other advertisers to pull ads from the platform in response.

On Saturday, Musk posted that X would file a "thermonuclear" lawsuit against Media Matters and others "who colluded in this fraudulent attack on our company."

Since Musk purchased Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022, a stream of advertisers have fled the platform, wary of some of Musk's controversial posts and layoffs of employees who worked to moderate content.

X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino told employees in a note on Sunday that while some advertisers had paused their investments following the report's publication, the company had been clear about its efforts to fight antisemitism and discrimination.

In an interview with Reuters earlier on Monday, Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said the nonprofit's findings flew in the face of X's statements that it had introduced safety protections to prevent ads from appearing next to harmful content.

"If you search for white nationalist content, there are ads flourishing. The system they say exists is not operating as such," he said.

Carusone gained attention in American politics for his initiatives that target right-wing personalities who he considers "bullies".[2] These activities, which he calls "brand safety", include similar that helped drive advertisers away from the shows of Glenn Beck,[2] who eventually lost his Fox News show, and Rush Limbaugh. He is also said to have played a role in hastening the departure of Bill O'Reilly from Fox.

Apple CEO Tim Cook was one of just three business titans seated at China President Xi Jinping’s table at last night’s dinner in San Francisco, a privilege that came at a cost of $40,000 a ticket, The New York Times reports.

The chief of Apple, which earns one-fifth of its revenue in China, was seated next to Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao at the event, held at the Hyatt Regency.

Citadel Securities CEO Peng Zhao and Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio also nabbed seats at the coveted table, where U.S. Commerce Secretary Dina Raimondo and U.S. China Ambassador Nicholas Burns were also in attendance.

Elon Musk attended the reception, costing $2,000 a ticket, along with Marc Benioff, chairman of Salesforce; Stan Deal, CEO of Boeing; and Raj Subramaniam, FedEx CEO.

Other notable business leaders at the dinner were Albert Bourla, chairman and CEO of Pfizer; Merit Janow, chairman of Mastercard; Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm; and Hock Tan, president and CEO of Broadcom.

Xi began his keynote address asking, “Are we adversaries or partners?”

“If one sees the other side as a primary competitor, the most consequential geopolitical challenge, and a pacing threat, it will only lead to misinformed policymaking, misguided actions and unwanted results,” the 70-year-old Xi continued.

Saying his aim is a “win-win” relationship with the U.S, the Chinese president signaled China will send new pandas to the United States, calling them “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.”

“We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States, and do our best to meet the wishes of the Californians so as to deepen the friendly ties between our two peoples,” Xi said, hinting that the San Deigo Zoo might be the first to receive the first pair of pandas.

The dinner was at the end of a day in which Xi and President Joe Biden held their first face-to-face meeting in a year and pledged to try to reduce U.S.-China tensions. It was also the final day of a two-day meeting of 21 Pacific nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Washington, D.C.’s National Zoo’s three giant pandas, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji, were returned to China eight days ago. Now, only four pandas are left in the United States, in the Atlanta Zoo.

“I was told that many American people, especially children, were really reluctant to say goodbye to the pandas, and went to the zoo to see them off,” Xi said.

Guests at the dinner were served a three-course meal consisting of an autumn vegetable salad, steak or vegetable curry as the main course, and a fresh fruit tart for dessert.

The wines served, Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc and Frank Family Carneros Pinot Noir, retail for an affordable $30 and $40, given the price of the tickets to the event.
