Elon Musk Slams Mark Zuckerberg For Controlling Too Much Speech In America

Elon Musk Slams Mark Zuckerberg For Controlling Too Much Speech In America

https://presidentialhill.com/elon-musk-slams-mark-zuckerberg-for-controlling-too-much-speech-in-america/

(PresidentialHill.com)- Elon Musk mocked Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, accusing him of wielding too much power over public discussions and referring to him as “Zuckerberg the 14th.”

Musk, 50, was in Vancouver for the TED conference when he was questioned about his ambitions to purchase Twitter, which he had already disclosed.

He claimed that it was a bid to safeguard democracy and promote freedom of expression, not a ploy to gain money.

When asked what he would say to detractors who argue that having the world’s wealthiest man oversee such a powerful platform may be hazardous, Musk said he intended to make it more open, not more limited.

Musk explained that as for media ownership, Mark Zuckerberg owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with a share ownership structure that will keep Mark Zuckerberg the 14th controlling those firms. Musk was referring to Louis 14th, the all-powerful ‘Sun King,’ much to the audience’s delight.

Musk said it would be a different environment on Twitter with him at the helm.

Rather than controlling Twitter himself, Musk stated that he intended to maintain as many stockholders as possible. He owns 9.1% of Twitter at the moment. Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, are held by Zuckerberg, who owns 12.8 percent of the corporation.

Musk also stated that he intended to open-source Twitter’s algorithm and would like to err on the side of freedom of speech than censorship.

Musk’s philosophy would be, ‘If in doubt, let the speech exist. If it’s a gray area, he would say, let the tweet exist.’

Musk says he is not claiming he has all the solutions, but he believes social media should be extremely hesitant to delete anything. Permanent prohibitions should be approached with caution.

He believes that timeouts are preferable to permanent bans.

Musk and Zuckerberg have had a turbulent relationship for a long time.

In November 2014, Zuckerberg hosted a meal at his Palo Alto home for Musk, two top researchers from Facebook’s new artificial intelligence division, and two other Facebook executives. According to The New York Times, Zuckerberg organized the meal in response to Musk’s repeated warnings about artificial intelligence, which he considered alarmist.

The two never got along: in July 2017, Zuckerberg said on Facebook Live that Musk’s ideas on AI were quite reckless.

Musk said that he’s talked to Zuckerberg about AI and that his knowledge of the topic is quite poor.

The bad blood between them is ever-present.

When a SpaceX rocket explosion in 2016 damaged a Facebook satellite, Zuckerberg expressed his disappointment by saying he was very saddened by its “failure.”

Musk publicly deleted his companies’ Facebook pages when Facebook was questioned about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, tweeting that the company gave him “the willies.”

Since then, Musk has urged people to ‘#DeleteFacebook,’ accused Facebook of spying on users, and blamed the business for inciting the January 6 uprising.

Musk confessed on Thursday that he had no idea if his offer for Twitter would succeed.

Later on Thursday, Twitter’s CEO told employees that the board is still debating Musk’s bid to take the social media company private for $43 billion, promising a “rigorous process” but not committing to a timetable.

After the board meeting on Thursday afternoon, Parag Agrawal, 37, addressed the company’s employees in an all-hands meeting.

He told employees that the company was still evaluating Musk’s $43 billion offer.

Stay tuned.

Novartis Seeks COVID-19 Antiviral Candidate Authorization

Novartis Seeks COVID-19 Antiviral Candidate Authorization

February 10, 2022 • 11:24 am CST

https://www.precisionvaccinations.com/2022/02/10/novartis-seeks-covid-19-antiviral-candidate-authorization

(Precision Vaccinations)

Switzerland-based Molecular Partners AG today announced its partner Novartis had requested Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. FDA for ensovibep, a DARPin antiviral therapeutic candidate to treat COVID-19.

Ensovibep is explicitly designed to inhibit target cell entry of the SARS-CoV-2 beta coronavirus.

This FDA submission is based on the totality of clinical and preclinical studies data, including the positive results of the Phase 2 portion of the EMPATHY study. This randomized, placebo-controlled study enrolled 407 symptomatic patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.

DARPins (Designed Ankyrin Repeat Proteins) are mono or multi-specific protein-based therapies designed to engage their targets for various effects specifically.

Ensovibep includes three covalently linked individual DARPin domains that bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2.

With these domains incorporated into a single molecule, ensovibep is designed to block the receptor-binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, even in the presence of some mutations of the spike protein.

Several characteristics of DARPin therapeutics make them potentially suitable for COVID-19 treatment, including multi-specific binding, the rapid onset of action, and scalable bacterial production.

"We are pleased that the results from the EMPATHY trial demonstrate the positive therapeutic effect of ensovibep, with the potential to be an important new treatment option to combat the rapidly evolving SARS-CoV-2 pandemic," commented Vas Narasimhan, CEO of Novartis, in a press release issued on January 10, 2022.

"As COVID-19 continues to burden healthcare systems across the globe, a range of treatments will be needed, and Novartis is proud to continue our collaboration with Molecular Partners on this unique treatment for COVID-19 and contribute ensovibep to this suite of options."

Molecular Partners and Novartis entered into a license agreement on January 18, 2022, under which Novartis in-licensed global rights to ensovibep.

Larry Kudlow rips John Kerry's coal claim: 'Most ridiculous statement I've ever heard'

Climate czar John Kerry claims America 'won't have coal' by 2030

https://www.foxnews.com/media/larry-kudlow-john-kerry-coal-2030

After Biden administration climate czar John Kerry claimed America "will not have coal plants" by 2030, FOX Business host Larry Kudlow told "America’s Newsroom" that it was a "ridiculous statement."

JOHN KERRY SAYS US 'WON'T HAVE COAL' BY 2030

LARRY KUDLOW: There isn’t a legitimate analyst of energy or climate who would actually believe or actually promote no carbons by 2030 or 2035. That’s the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard and in fact, the State Department had to walk it back. It is unserious and it is silly. By the way on coal. We have 100 years of coal reserves at least. But we are loaded with natural gas. We are loaded with oil.

We also have the lowest carbon emissions of any big country in the world. They are strangling this and consumers are going to get killed. Families are going to get killed. Businesses are going to get killed. This throws a wet blanket over the entire economy. We’re already seeing the results of it. It is a crazy policy.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION - Frequently Asked Questions

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

https://www.transportation.gov/safety/mask-travel-guidance

Frequently Asked Questions

As a result of a court order, effective April 18, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) January 29, 2021 Order requiring masks on public transportation conveyances and at transportation hubs is no longer in effect. Therefore, CDC will not enforce the Order. CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks in indoor public transportation settings at this time.

In addition, effective immediately, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will not enforce its mask-related Security Directives. TSA is also withdrawing its Security Directive 1582/84-21-01E, which was issued on April 15, 2022, and was scheduled to take effect on April 19, 2022.

Wearing of Face Masks While on Conveyances and at Transportation Hubs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an Order on January 29, 2021, requiring the wearing of masks by travelers to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Conveyance operators must also require that all persons wear masks when boarding, disembarking, and for the duration of travel, with specific exemptions as described in the Questions below. The CDC Order defines “conveyance” as including “aircraft, train, road vehicle (including rideshares), vessel…or other means of transport, including military transport.” (42 CFR §§ 70.1, 71.1). Operators of transportation hubs must require all persons to wear a mask when entering or on the premises of a transportation hub. A “transportation hub” means any airport, bus terminal, marina, seaport, or other port, subway station, terminal, train station, U.S. port of entry, or any other location that provides transportation.” More information about this order can be found on the CDC website, including the CDC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the mask requirement.
TSA issued an emergency amendment and three security directives supporting the CDC Order. SD 1582/84-21-01 pertains directly to owners and operators of ground transport. The other three pertain to the aviation industry. For more information about the TSA COVID-19 prevention efforts, visit the TSA COVID-19 hub or view the TSA COVID-19 FAQs

To support the implementation of the CDC Order and TSA Directives, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) compiled FAQs and will update them as additional information becomes available. The USDOT will also continue to engage stakeholders in conjunction with the CDC and other Federal agencies.

Microchip Biotechnologies Inc. Awarded $6.1M Grant To Build Next-Generation DNA Sequencer

Microchip Biotechnologies Inc. Awarded $6.1M Grant To Build Next-Generation DNA Sequencer

Published: Nov 10, 2004

https://www.biospace.com/article/releases/-b-microchip-biotechnologies-inc-b-awarded-6-1m-grant-to-build-next-generation-dna-sequencer-/

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Microchip Biotechnologies Inc. (MBI) announced today that it has been awarded a $6.1 million grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to develop an innovative nanofluidic technological platform that promises to dramatically reduce the cost of DNA sequencing. The grant was the largest in a series of eleven awards totaling $38M announced on October 14 by NHGRI (part of the US National Institutes of Health), with the goal of broadening the applications of genomic information in medical research and healthcare. NHGRI's near-term goal is to lower the cost of sequencing a mammalian-sized genome to $100,000 or less, which would enable researchers to sequence the genomes of hundreds or even thousands of people as part of studies to identify genes that contribute to cancer, diabetes and other common diseases.

"We are very pleased to receive this award which recognizes MBI's unique capabilities in developing advanced instrumentation for genomics and DNA sequencing," said Dr. Stevan Jovanovich, the Principal Investigator on the grant and MBI's President and CEO. Dr. Jovanovich was formerly the Vice President for Global Research at Amersham Biosciences. "Our effort will combine the talents of MBI's scientific and engineering

staff with some of the leading researchers in the fields of genomics, chemistry, and molecular biology based at U.C. Berkeley, Northwestern University and Columbia University."

MBI plans to build a Microbead INtegrated DNA Sequencer (MINDS) System which will push Sanger-based sequencing toward its ultimate performance limit in a completely automated bench-top system. The MINDS System retains the advantages of current DNA sequencing methods, including well-developed community infrastructure, commercial availability of reagents, and existing base-calling and analysis software, but employs proprietary new technologies that reduce process volumes to the nanoliter scale.

The heart of the MINDS System will be microfabricated glass wafers with on-chip valves, pumps, and routers connecting etched nanofluidic channels that can label, amplify, and purify DNA fragments retained on individual microbeads, followed by ultra-fast separation and analysis of fluorescently-tagged products in etched on-chip electrophoresis channels. The MINDS microchips will replace not only the fused silica capillaries used in current sequencing hardware, but also entire laboratories full of sample preparation equipment. MBI projects that its MINDS System will reduce the cost of current DNA sequencing methodologies by a factor of 100 or more.

Collaborating with MBI to develop important enabling technology related to the amplification and selection of clones and associated nanofluidics will be Professor Richard A. Mathies at U.C. Berkeley, who stated, "MBI is uniquely positioned to exploit the cutting edge technologies developed by our collaborative research. Its team has many years of industrial experience designing and building leading instrumentation platforms used in the life sciences industry."

Also collaborating with MBI will be Professor Annelise Barron at Northwestern University in Illinois, who will develop novel DNA separation matrices for the on-chip etched electrophoresis channels, and Professor Jingyue Ju at the Columbia University Genome Sequencing Center in New York, who will evaluate prototype MINDS Systems as a beta test site.

"Receiving this grant is an important independent validation not only of MBI's technological approach, but also of the scientific and management teams we have assembled to move this important effort forward," said Dr. Robert Stack, MBI's Vice President of Corporate and Business Development. "We believe the MINDS System will provide genome center DNA sequencing capabilities to individual research laboratories at an affordable price. The integration of nanoscale sample preparation and microchip analysis in the MINDS System should help to usher in further advances in biomedical research, health care, and personalized medicine as well as forensics and infectious disease detection."

About MBI: Microchip Biotechnologies Inc., http://www.microchipbiotech.com/, is an early-stage, privately-held company located in Fremont, CA that is developing advanced nanofluidic sample preparation and analytical instrumentation for the genomics and biodefense markets based on their proprietary NanoBioProcessor(TM) platform.

The human genome is a complete set of nucleic acid sequences for humans, encoded as DNA within the 23 chromosome pairs in cell nuclei and in a small DNA molecule found within individual mitochondria. These are usually treated separately as the nuclear genome and the mitochondrial genome.[2] Human genomes include both protein-coding DNA genes and noncoding DNAHaploid human genomes, which are contained in germ cells (the egg and sperm gamete cells created in the meiosis phase of sexual reproduction before fertilization) consist of 3,054,815,472 DNA base pairs (if X chromosome is used),[3] while female diploid genomes (found in somatic cells) have twice the DNA content. While there are significant differences among the genomes of human individuals (on the order of 0.1% due to single-nucleotide variants[4] and 0.6% when considering indels),[5] these are considerably smaller than the differences between humans and their closest living relatives, the bonobos and chimpanzees (~1.1% fixed single-nucleotide variants[6] and 4% when including indels).[7] Size in basepares can vary too: telomeres size is decreasing after every duplication of chromosomes and size of centromeres can be slightly different (which was discovered when those were fully sequenced in 2022).

Kim oversaw all of WHO's work related to HIV/AIDS, focusing on initiatives to help developing countries scale up their treatment, prevention, and care programs. This included an ambitious "3x5 initiative" designed to put three million people in developing countries on AIDS treatment by the end of 2005. The goal was not met until 2007, but according to the WHO, served to push the treatment strategy for AIDS in Africa further and faster than could have otherwise been hoped.[12][13] As of 2012, the program has treated more than 7 million Africans with HIV.

The Defense Department will require U.S. troops to get COVID-19 vaccines starting mid-September or as soon as the Food and Drug Administration approves it -- "whichever comes first," according to a memo released Monday by the Pentagon.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in the memo to troops that he would not "hesitate to act sooner or recommend a different course to the President if I feel the need to do so" should the need arise with increasing cases attributed to the Delta variant.

"I will seek the President's approval to make the vaccines mandatory no later than mid-September, or immediately upon [approval by the Food and Drug Administration,] whichever comes first," he added.

News of the memo was first reported by The Associated Press.

Austin said the department will spend the next several weeks "preparing for the transition."

"I have every confidence that Service leadership and your commanders will implement this new vaccination program with professionalism, skill, and compassion. We will have more to say about this as implementation plans are fully developed," he wrote.

The decision comes a week after President Joe Biden told defense officials to develop a plan requiring troops to get vaccinated -- part of his broader campaign to require vaccinations among the federal workforce.

Since the vaccines were authorized by the FDA under emergency use, they have been voluntary for all service members. Military officials have maintained since last November -- before the vaccines had even been approved under an emergency use authorization -- that they would remain voluntary for personnel until the FDA issued formal approval.

But that was seven months before the highly contagious Delta variant began sweeping across the country, increasing case numbers and upping the likelihood that other, possibly more virulent, mutations could occur, according to Johns Hopkins University medical experts.

After months of declining coronavirus infections in U.S. troops -- 6,006 cases in May and 6,574 cases in June, according to the DoD -- cases soared to more than 11,200 in July.

Shortly after Austin's memo was released Monday, Biden issued a statement praising the decision, saying the country is on a "wartime footing" against the virus.

"We cannot let up in the fight against COVID-19, especially with the Delta variant spreading rapidly through unvaccinated populations," Biden said.

In a briefing with reporters Monday, Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said there's no evidence that vaccine refusal is a widespread problem in the military.

"Members of the military understand when you sign up for the military, that there are requirements laid upon you," he said. "Some of those requirements include being healthy and fit and ready to serve. Some of that depends on our requirement to make sure you're fit and healthy, through inoculation and vaccination."

Kirby said individual cases in which service members refuse to get vaccinated will likely be handled at the command level.

Vaccine holdouts have expressed a number of reasons why they have yet to get the shots.

A senior airman stationed in Georgia who spoke on the condition of anonymity said he has not had the shots because he has concerns about the messenger RNA technology used in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, a new technique to elicit an immune response. The vaccines are the first to use the technology after 30 years of research.

"Once FDA approves it, you know, I'm all for it," the airman said. "I go out, and I wear my mask. ... I don't think COVID is something that should be downplayed. I will have no problem taking the vaccine. It's just not FDA approved yet."

He added that he also is concerned that the Department of Veterans Affairs would not be required to provide health care or disability compensation to those who received it on a voluntary basis, should the vaccine cause long-term health effects.

"Let's say somewhere down the road, we come down with some disability because of something that was caused by the vaccine. That's not to say it will happen, but if it does, and come back to the VA, they're gonna be like, 'Well, it was voluntary at the time -- you got it under your own free will,'" he said.

Once service members are officially required to get the vaccine, Kirby said, their status will be tracked in their electronic medical records, along with other inoculations.

But details on exactly what the new policy will mean for service members are still scarce and will be laid out in an upcoming order.

The Pentagon believes the services have enough vaccine doses on hand to inoculate everyone, Kirby said.

The services will have to periodically report to Austin on how well the vaccination effort is going, Kirby said, but how that will work still has yet to be determined.

The exact number of active-duty personnel who have received the vaccine has not been released.

Kirby said Monday about 73% of the active-duty force has received at least one vaccine shot, and roughly 62% are fully vaccinated.

According to Defense Department data released last week, the numbers are lower across the services when including the Reserve and National Guard forces, with 50% of all U.S. troops fully vaccinated and another 11% with at least one dose.

More than 212,000 military personnel have contracted COVID-19, giving them natural immunity to reinfection for at least eight months, according to research -- a common reason some say they don't need the vaccine.

However, immune responses differ in individuals, and vaccines evoke a stronger, more universal response, which scientists say could protect people longer than natural immunity alone, according to research published in June in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Concern about the Defense Department's previous handling of the anthrax vaccine rollout also is cited by hesitant service members as a reason for not wanting to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The DoD launched a mandatory anthrax vaccine program in 1998 using an immunization that had been authorized under emergency use. Nearly immediately, troops reported side effects, including fever and chills, nausea and body aches.

The airman cited the anthrax vaccine program as one of the reasons service members are concerned about the vaccine. He described Austin's decision as a "bad move on his part ... given that already too many people in the military really don't trust their government."

But, he added, he now will get his shot.

"I have it in writing that it was mandatory," he said.

In his memo, Austin recommended that troops just go ahead and get their vaccines.

"I strongly encourage all DoD military and civilian personnel -- as well as contractor personnel -- to get vaccinated now and for military Service members to not wait for the mandate," he wrote.
