The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that as part of its settlement with President Donald Trump, the IRS will no longer pursue any claims it may have against Trump, his family members, or his companies over unpaid taxes.

The agreement, signed by acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, says it encompasses "tax returns filed before the effective date" of the May 18 settlement.

The IRS waiver comes after the Trump administration announced the creation of a $1.7 billion fund to compensate allies of the Republican president who assert that they were mistreated by the Department of Justice under the Biden administration.

The Anti-Weaponization Fund was announced by the department as part of a deal to resolve the president's lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns.

Blanche called it a "lawful process for victims of lawfare and weaponization to be heard and seek redress."

Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward defended the settlement agreement between Trump and the Department of Justice.

"I already have the authority to settle any claim that is brought against the United States of America," Woodward told reporters.

"I think that it's way, way, way too early for us to rush to judgment on whether this was a good or a bad idea, to describe it as a slush fund, or really even to criticize it," he added.

John Koskinen, who served as IRS commissioner under the Obama administration, told Politico the expanded settlement set a "terrible precedent."

"It makes you wonder what the President has to hide in those tax returns. He's apparently been actively trading in the stock market and, since he knows a lot more about situations than the average investor, he's probably generated significant taxable earnings," Koskinen said.

"Not auditing his returns is the same as giving him an easy way to, in effect, receive money from the government," Koskinen added.

Danny Werfel, who served as IRS commissioner under the Biden administration, told Politico he was "unaware of a single precedent where the IRS has agreed in advance to permanently forgo examination of previously filed tax returns for a specific person or business."
