CNN is preparing to cut staff this week as CEO Mark Thompson pushes ahead with a
major digital overhaul, with even deeper reductions possible if a looming
merger reshapes the network, the New York Post reports.
The
Warner Bros. Discovery-owned outlet is expected to eliminate “a few dozen”
positions as it refocuses its more than 3,000-person workforce on growth areas,
according to the Status newsletter.
The
cuts are said to target roles tied less to digital expansion, underscoring
CNN’s continued move away from its traditional cable model.
The
layoffs follow an earlier round under Thompson, who reduced headcount by
roughly 6% last year as part of a broader strategy to pivot toward streaming
and digital audiences.
Bigger
changes could be on the horizon.
Paramount recently agreed to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal valued at about $110
billion, a transaction still awaiting regulatory approval. If completed, the
merger could trigger more sweeping cuts at CNN, particularly as overlapping
roles are consolidated.
At
Paramount, similar restructuring is already underway.
BS
News recently trimmed about 6% of its workforce — roughly 60 to 70 employees —
with leadership saying parts of the newsroom needed to shrink to fund digital
growth initiatives.
The
company also shut down its long-running CBS News Radio division, eliminating
all roles tied to the unit.
Industry
observers expect a combined CNN and CBS
News operation to streamline functions aggressively.
As
one former media executive put it, “The day of reckoning is coming,” adding
that consolidation would allow companies to “combine a number of functions and
save a lot of money.”
