President Donald Trump's bid to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is both "unlawful and dangerous," according to former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the central bank.

"President Donald Trump's claim that he has 'fired' Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook 'for cause' is not only unlawful; it is profoundly dangerous," Yellen wrote in a Financial Times opinion piece. "It represents a direct attempt to politicize the Fed, intimidate its leadership and bend monetary policy to the president's will."

Cook, appointed in 2022 and the first Black woman to serve on the Fed Board, has faced allegations from Trump and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte for mortgage fraud. She has denied wrongdoing and has vowed to fight her removal in court.

The Federal Reserve governors serve 14-year terms and may only be removed "for cause" tied to documented misconduct to avoid political retribution, according to Yellen.

"Accusations are not cause," Yellen argued. "For Trump to invoke cause here is a fiction; it is a pretext to justify an autocratic power grab.

"This is not about one Federal Reserve governor," Yellen continued. "It is about intimidation. By targeting Cook, Trump is sending a chilling message to every member of the Federal Reserve board and to the regional reserve bank presidents who take part in the Federal Open Market Committee: express disagreement with the president's views and you are next."

Yellen fears the Federal Reserve Board will become a "puppet stage for presidential whims and priorities."

She was a DEI hire by former President Barack Obama as the first woman Federal Reserve Board and former President Joe Biden as the first woman Treasury Secretary on those administration's presidential whims and priorities.

Yellen is not a fan of Trump's politics, taking the political position his politics are dangerous to economics.

"If markets believe the Fed's hand is guided by political orders, every interest rate decision will lose credibility," Yellen wrote. "Inflation expectations could become unmoored. The dollar's standing as the world's reserve currency would be imperiled."

Yellen urged Congress, the courts, and the financial community to reject Trump's move outright.

"Trump's attempted sacking of Cook should be met with outrage, not with shrugs," she concluded. "Congress must defend the Fed's independence. The courts must strike down this unlawful power play. And the financial community must raise its voice against a direct assault on the credibility of the dollar itself."

Trump is convinced the Biden holdover-led Fed is costing Americans billions by not reducing interest rates in a timely fashion, calling sitting Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell as "too late."

The roughly 300 National Guard troops still in Los Angeles will remain there despite a judge's ruling that President Donald Trump violated federal law by deploying them in the first place, a U.S. attorney said Tuesday.

Although Federal District Court Judge Charles Breyer, a Clinton appointee, ruled against Trump, he did not order the withdrawal of the troops.

Bill Essayli, acting U.S. attorney for the Central District of California,  said Breyer's decision was "misleading"; the troops are already doing what the judge said they should be doing — guarding federal buildings and employees.

"The military will remain in Los Angeles. This is a false narrative and a misleading injunction. The military has never engaged in direct law enforcement operations here in LA. They protect our federal employees our properties so our federal agents can safely enforce federal laws in the face of the thugs being unleashed and encouraged by state and local politicians," Essayli said in a post to X.

Breyer placed his injunction on hold for 10 days, The New York Times reported.

Breyer's ruling comes after California sued. The state said the troops sent to Los Angeles over the summer violated federal law prohibiting military enforcement of domestic laws. The Trump administration argued the Posse Comitatus Act doesn't apply because the troops were protecting federal officers, not enforcing laws. They say the troops were mobilized under an authority that allows the president to deploy them.

Trump federalized 4,000 members of the California National Guard and sent them to LA over the objections of Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom and city leaders. He also sent another 700 Marines amid the LA riots stemming from protests over ICE immigration operations.

Newsom took a victory lap after Breyer's ruling despite Essayli's assertion of the status quo.

"DONALD TRUMP LOSES AGAIN. The courts agree – his militarization of our streets and use of the military against US citizens is ILLEGAL," Newsom said in a post to X.

New York Attorney General Letitia James vowed to appeal a court ruling that vacated President Donald Trump's $527 million fraud penalty on Thursday.

James issued a statement shortly after the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department of the New York State Supreme Court, tossed the civil penalty against the president, calling it "excessive."

The court, which was split on the merits of the lawsuit and the lower court's fraud finding, dismissed the penalty Judge Arthur Engoron imposed in its entirety while also leaving a pathway for further appeals to the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals.

"The First Department today affirmed the well-supported finding of the trial court: Donald Trump, his company, and two of his children are liable for fraud," James said in a statement. "The court upheld the injunctive relief we won, limiting Donald Trump and the Trump Organization officers' ability to do business in New York. It should not be lost to history: yet another court has ruled that the president violated the law, and that our case has merit.

"We will seek appeal to the Court of Appeals and continue to protect the rights and interests of New Yorkers," her statement concluded.

After finding Trump engaged in fraud by flagrantly padding financial statements that went to lenders and insurers, Engoron ordered him last year to pay $355 million in penalties. With interest, Trump's total penalty has climbed to more than $515 million. When combined with penalties against other Trump Organization executives, the sum now exceeds $527 million.

The appeals court, the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, took an unusually long time to rule, weighing Trump's appeal for nearly 11 months after oral arguments last fall. Normally, appeals are decided in a matter of weeks or a few months.

Trump denied wrongdoing. In a six-minute summation of sorts after a monthslong trial, Trump proclaimed in January 2024 that he was "an innocent man" and the case was a "fraud on me." He has repeatedly maintained that the case and verdict were political moves by James and Engoron, who are both Democrats.
