ATF’s AR-15 Ammo Ban Halted in Big Win for California
by AWR Hawkins10 Mar
2015
On March 10 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and
Explosives (ATF) halted their proposed AR-15 ammo ban to reconsider the
“framework” on which the ban rested.
This is huge news for Californians, who already face a ban on most
traditional hunting ammunition thanks a statewide ban on lead-based ammunition
singed by Governor Jerry Brown (D)
on October 11, 2013.
The pending AR-15 ammo ban was to be directed toward the
M855 round and would have left Californians with even fewer types of ammunition
available for hunting and target shooting purposes. But on March 10, ATF
Headquarters announced that the ban is being delayed to reconsider the “framework”
being used to determine armor piercing qualities.
Public comment on the proposed ban was being accepted
through March 16, but on March 10 the ATF released a “Special Advisory” saying
they had gotten the message.
After the close of the comment period, ATF will process the
comments received, further evaluate the issues raised therein, and provide an
additional open and transparent process (for example, through additional
proposals and opportunities for comment) before proceeding with any framework.
The bottom line–Californians and other Americans received a
reprieve… for now.
