Just when you think your holiday travel is safe, the Service Employees International Union is ready to help ruin the holidays. Employees of private contractors at New York airports congregated at LaGuardia’s Terminal B on Tuesday to protest their wages – what they call “poverty wages and poor working conditions.”

The workers, from Airway Cleaners, PrimeFlight, AirServ, and Aviation Safeguard, suggested that the wages are somehow affecting travelers – and actually made the case that they’re doing a bad job thanks to their impoverishment. Why? According to the SEIU, low-bid contracting has driven down wages, with one study suggesting that outsourcing of baggage porter jobs tripling from 25 percent to 84 percent over the last two decades, and depressing real wages in New York by 45 percent.

The problem for the SEIU is that according to the Airline Quality Ratings, presented by the Wichita State University and Purdue University, “For the fourth consecutive year, the performance of the nation’s leading carriers improved.” Overall, 10 of the 15 carriers rated in 2010 and 2011 improved in 2012. That included ratings in “on-time performance, baggage handling, involuntary denied boardings and customer complaints.”

Starbucks union delegates involved in contract bargaining voted to reject the coffee chain's latest proposal that guaranteed annual raises of at least 2%, Workers United said.

Out of the 490 baristas representing the company's more than 550 unionized U.S. stores, 81% rejected the proposal, which did not offer any changes to economic benefits such as healthcare or any immediate pay hike.

"Starbucks' current offer is insufficient to finalize a deal," the workers union said.

Starbucks said in a statement that the union presented an incomplete framework for single-store contracts to their delegates to vote on, adding that its actions were causing a delay in reaching a mutual agreement.

The company pays its baristas more than $19 an hour on average currently, which with benefits comes to about $30 an hour. It had proposed to the union that their annual raises would not fall below 2%.

The parties had been advancing contract negotiations in recent weeks after agreeing to bring in a mediator to help resume stalled negotiations in February.

Since then, they have reached tentative agreements on many key contract issues, such as health and safety measures, but the latest offer was "not good enough," according to the memo shared by Workers United.

The union, representing over 10,000 baristas, and the company had recently agreed to withdraw lawsuits filed against each other.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. government has criminally charged David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) of California, for allegedly conspiring to obstruct an immigration-related detention in Los Angeles.

On June 6, Huerta allegedly conspired with other protesters to share the location of a site where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents had arrived to conduct a search warrant of businesses purportedly employing illegal immigrants without authorization.

When he arrived at the location, Huerta allegedly sat down in front of an ICE vehicle to obstruct its path, and encouraged others to do so, according to the criminal complaint filed against him in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

“HUERTA and another person sat cross legged in front of the vehicular gate. HUERTA waved at those around him and yelled ‘everybody sit down, sit down!’... HUERTA also yelled to the protestors ’stop the vehicles,'” according to an affidavit in support of the complaint. Huerta was arrested after allegedly sitting down in front of a white police van that attempted to enter the site, and allegedly preventing it from entering the property.

Los Angeles has been rocked by three days of riots and protests against federal immigration enforcement efforts. President Donald Trump activated the National Guard to quell the riots, amid California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s opposition to the deployment. In response, the state sued the Trump administration on June 9, alleging the deployment was illegal.

At least 21 protesters had been arrested as of Sunday night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The criminal complaint alleges that Huerta was taunting federal agents at the site.

“HUERTA was also yelling at me and other officers, at one point screaming ‘explain to me, you want to go [expletive] speak with your [expletive] face’ and reaching through the gate to gesture with his arm,” Ribner wrote, adding that “HUERTA also yelled to the protestors ’stop the vehicles.'”

Huerta has been charged with one count of a “conspiracy to impede an officer” under Title 18, United States Code Section 372. The offense carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison, as well as a fine. A video of Huerta’s activity was shared on social media by Bill Essayli, the interim U.S. Attorney whose office is leading the prosecution.

Some Democratic elected officials and labor groups criticized Huerta’s arrest and called for his release.

“The violent assault and arrest of California SEIU President David Huerta is unacceptable. Mr. Huerta should be released immediately and all charges dropped,” U.S. House of Representatives’ Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) wrote in a statement.

The American Federation of Labor—Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) in a statement: “As the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda has unnecessarily targeted our hard-working immigrant brothers and sisters, David was exercising his constitutional rights and conducting legal observation of ICE activity in his community.

“The labor movement stands with David and we will continue to demand justice for our union brother until he is released.”

2013 election for Mayor

On January 27, 2013, de Blasio announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City in the fall election. [37]

The Democratic primary consists of 9 candidates including big names such as Council Speaker Christine Quinn, former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner and, former New York City Comptroller and nominee for Mayor in 2009 Bill Thompson.[38][39] Early polls following the entrance of Weiner into the race in April showed De Blasio in fourth or fifth place.[40]

Despite this poor starting position, de Blasio was able to gain the endorsements of many major Democratic clubs such as the Barack Obama Democratic Club of Upper Manhattan as well as New York City's largest trade union, SEIU Local 1199. Celebrities such as Alec Baldwin and Sarah Jessica Parker have also given endorsements.[41][42] Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean and U.S. Congresswoman Yvette Clarke have also thrown in their endorsements.[43]

De Blasio gained media attention during the campaign when he and a dozen others, including City Councilman Stephen Levin, were arrested for protesting the closing of Long Island College Hospital.[44] Fellow Democratic mayoral hopefuls Anthony Weiner and City Comptroller John Liu were also at the protest but stayed in the background to avoid arrest. De Blasio and Levin were released a few hours later with a disorderly conduct summons.[45]

Over time, de Blasio began to move up in the polls and a mid-August poll showed him taking the Democratic lead for the first time.
