Martin O'Malley: "Black Lives Matter. White lives matter. All lives matter."

Black Lives Matter
Protests
At the Netroots Nation Conference in July 2015, dozens of Black Lives Matter activists took over the stage at an event featuring Martin O'Malley and Bernie Sanders. Activists, including Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, asked both candidates for specific policy proposals to address deaths in police custody.[165] The protesters chanted several slogans, including "if I die in police custody, burn everything down". After conference organizers pleaded with the protesters for several minutes, O'Malley responded by pledging to release a wide-ranging plan for criminal justice reform. Protesters later booed O'Malley when he stated "Black lives matter. White lives matter. All lives matter."[166] O'Malley later apologized for his remarks, saying that he didn't mean to disrespect the black community.[166]

On August 8, 2015, a speech by Democratic presidential candidate and civil rights activist Bernie Sanders was disrupted by a group from the Seattle Chapter of Black Lives Matter including chapter co-founder Marissa Johnson[167] who walked onstage, seized the microphone from him and called his supporters racists and white supremacists.[168][169][170] Sanders issued a platform in response.[171]

Nikki Stephens, the operator of a Facebook page called "Black Lives Matter: Seattle" issued an apology to Sanders' supporters, claiming these actions did not represent her understanding of BLM. She was then sent messages by members of the Seattle Chapter which she described as threatening, and was forced to change the name of her group to "Black in Seattle". The founders of Black Lives Matter stated that they had not issued an apology.[172]

In August, activists chanting "Black Lives Matter" interrupted the Las Vegas rally of Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush.[173] As Bush exited early, some of his supporters started responding to the protesters by chanting "white lives matter" or "all lives matter".[174]

In October, a speech by Hillary Clinton on criminal justice reform and race at Atlanta University Center was interrupted by BLM activists.[175]

In November, a BLM protester was physically assaulted at a Donald Trump rally in Birmingham, Alabama. In response, Trump said, "maybe he should have been roughed up because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing."[176] Trump had previously threatened to fight any Black Lives Matter protesters if they attempted to speak at one of his events.[177]

In March 2016, Black Lives Matter helped organize the 2016 Donald Trump Chicago rally protest that forced Trump to cancel the event.[178][179] Four individuals were arrested and charged in the incident. Two were "charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest", one was "charged with two misdemeanor counts of resisting and obstructing a peace officer", and the fourth "was charged with one misdemeanor count of resisting and obstructing a peace officer".[180] A CBS reporter was one of those arrested outside the rally. He was charged with resisting arrest.

Law enforcement
Many individuals in law enforcement have been critical of BLM.[citation needed] The hashtag #BlueLivesMatter, Blue Lives Matter, was created by supporters of the police.[200] Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. of Milwaukee County has been critical of Black Lives Matter, stating that there is no police brutality problem in America and that "there is no racism in the hearts of police officers".[201] Marchers using a BLM banner were recorded in a video chanting, "Pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon" at the Minnesota State Fair. Law enforcement groups said that the chant promotes death to police. The protest organizer disputed that interpretation, saying "What we are promoting is that if black people who kill police officers are going to fry, then we want police officers to face the same treatment that we face as civilians for killing officers."[202] A North Carolina police chief retired after calling BLM a terrorist group.[203] A police officer in Oregon was removed from street duty following a social media post in which he said he would have to "babysit these fools", in reference to a planned BLM event.

Marketing and Management Science in the 21st Century

Doing Well by Doing Good:
Marketing and Management Science in the 21st Century
by Samuel Sewell   bestselfusa@gmail.com   (239) 591-4565

The business community in America has, at best, a tenuous grasp on the indisputable principle that honorable conduct is a prerequisite for abundant profit! Benjamin Franklin understood the benefits of enlightened and ethical business practices when he advised, “Do well by doing good.”

Throughout the history of capitalism many entrepreneurs have prospered through application of this principle. A selected review of early industrialists makes the point that these entrepreneurs were driven by their own personal philosophy; that doing “good” for their people means that their business will also do “well.”

But it wasn’t until the 1960s that modern management science began  to teach students that they can create stable wealth by doing “good” for their employees, their customers, and their communities. Finally, a fundamental truth that guides the creation of sustainable wealth was available to business students.

Today there is excellent data, both qualitative and quantitative, showing that a company’s successful relationship with people and ethical business practices is positively related to its financial performance.

Four scholars, from divergent fields, deserve the credit for developing the established principles that produce optimal wealth. Let’s take a brief look at these pioneers.

Maslow, Drucker, McGregor, and Nash is not a law firm. MDMN is an acronym I created to serve as a reference point for this discussion on modern marketing and management science.

Abraham Maslow, through his books and teachings, brought us the psychology of business. Maslow, father of modern management, states: “The good society is one in which virtue pays.” In a just society prosperity is the natural consequence of “Doing Good.”

Peter Drucker’s primary academic career was spent at Sarah Lawrence College. He also published 39 books on management that were translated into 30 languages. “I became an immediate convert: Maslow’s evidence is overwhelming. But to date, very few people have paid much attention. He (Maslow) wrote Eupsychian Management to bring McGregor and me down to earth." -- Peter Drucker, 1995. Here in the 21st century it remains true that very few people are aware of the contribution of MDMN.

Douglas McGregor, PhD in psychology from Harvard University, was a Management professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His 1960 book, The Human Side of Enterprise, had a profound influence on education practices; “The ingenuity of the average worker is sufficient to outwit any system of controls devised by management.” Like all natural systems, human behavior cannot be controlled; however it can be managed. “Any attempt by management to enforce behavior that is contrary to human nature is preordained to fail. Conversely, management methods that compliment human nature are sure to provide wealth and well being for all concerned.”

John Nash, in the hit movie “A Beautiful Mind,” is at a bar with three other friends when he begins to develop a theory of what is now called Nash Equalibria, the idea that won him the Nobel Prize and the respect of his colleagues and loved ones, despite his schizophrenia.

At the bar, he and his friends begin to compete for the beautiful blonde in a group of five women. “If we all go for the blonde” Nash says, “we block each other; not a single one of us is going to get her…and we insult the other girls. But, what if no one goes for the blonde? We don’t get in each others’ way, and we don’t insult the other girls. It’s the only way to win….the best result comes from everyone in the room doing what’s best for himself and for the group.”

The two most important conclusions gleaned from John Nash’s equations are;

1. More profit is created through cooperation than through competition.

2. Nice guys finish first.

For more background we suggest becoming familiar with the works of Peter Drucker and Abraham Maslow, as well as Douglas McGregor, and find out why John Nash won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1994.

One can hardly complete a business course on the college level without being introduced to the difference between the “X” and “Y” theories of management, as well as Maslow’s needs hierarchy. These classes do not provide adequate familiarization with modern management science, nor do they really explain Maslow in relationship to management.

Most courses fail to convey adequately the idea that profits are maximized when respect for the “human side of enterprise” is obvious. Maybe an additional problem is that students of business do the same thing with their subjects as I did with Algebra. I did what I needed to graduate, and have never worked another algebra problem for the rest of my life.

While these ideas were slow to catch on, today’s upper echelon management professionals strive to find creative applications for these principles. Because of intellectual competition and academic hubris, the contributions of MDMN are rarely available in a single source no matter what college you attend. Best Self USA has blended the contributions of MDMN and created a marketing and management training program for individuals and organizations.

We have created a research paper tracking the history and guiding principles of modern management science and published it free of charge at:

I hope this helps remind business people of their college days, and encourages them to use proven profit enhancement principles based on “good guys finish first.”

Nancy Pelosi to DNC: Gun Control Part Of Building A ‘Strong America’
by AWR Hawkins 28 Jul 2016
During her July 28 speech to the DNC, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-52) described gun control as part of building a “strong America.”

She specifically pushed an all-out rejection of the NRA and called for Congress to add the no-fly list to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System’s (NICS) list of prohibited buyers.

Pelosi said, “If you’re on the no-fly list, then you belong on the no-buy list.” She did not mention that the NRA’s opposition to using the no-fly list for background checks has been echoed by similar opposition from The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and CNN, all of which have aligned against using the no-fly list for gun control. The news outlets cited the list’s imprecision and the fact that using such a list tramples the Due Process rights of Americans.

The Boston Globe also voiced opposition to using the no-fly list for gun control but took a different tack in so doing. The Globe simply asked why people who are too dangerous to board planes–or thought to be too dangerous to buy guns–are allowed to mingle with the rest of society, to begin with? If such people were simply arrested–or deported, when applicable–it would both increase the safety of Americans and remove the need for more laws/regulations to keep no-fly listers in check.

But Pelosi was on a mission. She described gun control as a show of “courage” and said now is no time for “cowardice in the face of the National Rifle Association.”
