data breach at Xfinity has given hackers access to the personal information of nearly all of the company's customers.

Comcast, the parent company of Xfinity, sent a notice to customers Monday saying there was "unauthorized access to its internal systems" as a result of a vulnerability in software from cloud computing company Citrix, which is used by Xfinity.

Xfinity said it began notifying customers of the data breach Monday through a variety of channels, including the Xfinity website, email and news media.

The company said the unauthorized users had access to its internal systems between Oct. 16-19 and they discovered the "suspicious activity" during a routine cybersecurity exercise on Oct. 25.

Xfinity says it notified federal law enforcement and initiated an investigation "into the nature and scope of the incident." The company said they determined on Nov. 16 that information was likely acquired.

Bayer (Connecting the Dots: Bayer, Sidley Austin LLP, Pfizer Inc. (Covid Vaccine Manufacturer), FDA, Johnson & Johnson (Covid Vaccine Manufacturer), Vaccine Injuries & Soros Funding, All Networking)

Bayer AG

Bayer AG (/ˈbaɪ.ər/, commonly pronounced /ˈbeɪər/;[3] German: [ˈbaɪɐ]) is a German multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company and is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies and biomedical companies in the world. Headquartered in Leverkusen, Bayer's areas of business include pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare products, agricultural chemicals, seeds and biotechnology products. The company is a component of the EURO STOXX 50 stock market index.[4]

Bayer was founded in 1863 in Barmen as a partnership between dye salesman Friedrich Bayer (1825–1880) and dyer Friedrich Weskott (1821–1876). As was common in this era, the company was established as a dyestuffs producer. The versatility of aniline chemistry led Bayer to expand its business into other areas, and in 1899, Bayer launched the compound acetylsalicylic acid under the trademarked name Aspirin. In 1904, Bayer received a trademark for the "Bayer Cross" logo, which was subsequently stamped onto each aspirin tablet, creating an iconic product that is still sold by Bayer. Other commonly known products initially commercialized by Bayer include heroinphenobarbitalpolyurethanes, and polycarbonates.

In 1925, Bayer merged with five other German companies to form IG Farben, creating the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company. Following World War II, the Allied Control Council seized IG Farben's assets[a][5] because of its role in the Nazi war effort and involvement in the Holocaust, including using slave labour from concentration camps and humans for dangerous medical testing, and production of Zyklon B, a chemical used in gas chambers.[6] In 1951, IG Farben was split into its constituent companies, and Bayer was reincorporated as Farbenfabriken Bayer AG. Bayer played a key role in the Wirtschaftswunder in post-war West Germany, quickly regaining its position as one of the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical corporations.

Republicans' Calls Growing to Defund Harvard

Newsmax

By Sandy Fitzgerald    |   Thursday, 14 December 2023 09:06 AM EST

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/harvard-claudine-gay-antisemitism/2023/12/14/id/1145909/

Republicans are calling for Harvard University to be defunded of billions of dollars it receives through tax breaks and federal payments after statements made by its president, Claudine Gay, concerning antisemitic speech on campus while she was being questioned during a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing last week.

"We must defund the rot in America's higher education," Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., the committee member questioning Gay during the hearing, told the New York Post. "It is unacceptable and un-American that any taxpayer dollars are going to universities propping up their promulgation of antisemitism by supporting professors, students, and staff, many who have openly called for the genocide of Jews."

She added that House Republicans "will use every tool at our disposal to ensure that schools that protect and encourage antisemitism are cut off from any and all federal funds."

The university is under investigation by the federal Department of Education to determine if it has violated the civil rights of its Jewish students, who come under Title VI protection in the federal Civil Rights Act.

Harvard's highest governing board, the Harvard Corporation, this week said Gay will stay in office and rejected calls for her removal after her congressional testimony, saying that she "is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing," according to NPR.

The calls for Gay to resign or be fired came after her testimony included saying that calls for the genocide of Jewish people did not automatically breach Harvard's code of conduct. She has apologized for her statements.

Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., after Gay was permitted to stay on, told the Post that he plans to introduce a bill making Harvard and other schools face financial consequences if they are shown to foster antisemitism on campuses after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

"The American higher ed system is a racket, forcing taxpayers to first subsidize schools before roping them into paying student loans they didn’t choose to take on," he said in a statement to the Post. "The schools make out like bandits, indoctrinating our youth with hate and delusion, all while taxpayers fund the whole thing. My bill starts to combat this scheme."

Federal government funding to Harvard hit a record $676 million this year in direct payments, along with a $25 million COVID rescue fund payment, according to the school's statement for fiscal year 2023.

Harvard also gets 64% of research funding from federal departments, with the largest amount allocated from the Department of Health and Human Services.

More federal cash comes in through tuition payments from students, with an undisclosed amount of the $1.33 billion in tuition payments coming from federal student loans and Pell grants.

Harvard's tax-exempt status, however, results in its largest source of money, as donations are tax-deductible.

This also allows the school to benefit by not being required to pay taxes on certain transactions, allowing it to build an endowment to total just under $51 billion.

Tax breaks are also in place that allow Harvard's money management to trade bonds, property, and shares without being charged capital gains or corporation taxes, or taxes on dividends and interest payments.

Harvard in 2023 brought in $186 million more than it spent and drew $2.46 billion from its endowment. The endowment tax was just 1.4%, while an individual taxpayer would face a 37% tax.

The 1.4% tax came as a result of tax reforms during former President Donald Trump's administration, with the levy being imposed on endowments in colleges with at least 500 students who pay tuition, and with net assets of at least $500,000 per student.

Harvard has 23,000 students, meaning its endowment comes to $3 million in net assets per student.

Other Republicans who have called for defunding Harvard and other universities over antisemitism include Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Florida governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis.

"Any university or college that peddles blatant antisemitism, especially after Hamas’ brutal attack on Israeli civilians, women, and children, has no place molding the minds of future generations, never mind receiving millions of taxpayer funds to do so," Scott said in October when he introduced legislation to defund universities that "fund or facilitate events that promote violent antisemitism.”

DeSantis, a graduate of Harvard Law School, called on the government to "get smart about how we deal with these universities. We can’t keep funding universities that are creating this type of toxic environment and toxic ideology.”

Smaller Bites: Connecting the Dots: Norman Lear, His Wife Lyn Davis Lear & Soros Funding, All Networking

Television Producer-Writer Norman Lear Dies at 101

Television producer-writer Norman Lear, whose groundbreaking hit comedy shows such as "All in the Family" and "Maude" addressed social issues like race and abortion that had rarely been seen on U.S. television, died Wednesday at the age of 101, according to media reports.

Lear, one of the most influential people in television, died at his Los Angeles home of natural causes, his publicist told Variety.

Lear, who won six Emmy awards for his work in television, was known for his campaigning for liberal causes, including voting rights, and worked well into his 90s.

In 2017, he rebooted his 1970s TV series "One Day at a Time" to focus on a Cuban American family, and in 2020 he earned his sixth Emmy for a live special broadcast of "All in the Family" and "Good Times."

In February 2021, Lear received the Carol Burnett Award, a lifetime achievement award, at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony for his contributions to television.

In addition to "All in the Family" and "Maude," Lear dominated American TV screens in the 1970s and '80s with the situation-comedy shows "Sanford and Son," "The Jeffersons," and the soap-opera spoof "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." At one point in the 1970s Lear had eight shows on the air with an estimated 120 million viewers, Time magazine said.

By drawing material from social themes of the time, Lear's shows made network executives nervous because they had a depth and air of controversy.

"For him to say that he didn't have an impact on not only television but society is ... a little too humble," said Rob Reiner, who had a co-starring role on "All in the Family" before becoming a film director.

Lear and production partner Bud Yorkin put "All in the Family" on the air in January 1971 and the show would go on to win four Emmys for best comedy in its nine seasons. It was based on a British show, "Til Death Do Us Part," and gave U.S. television one of its most memorable and controversial characters - Archie Bunker.

Carroll O'Connor portrayed Archie as a crude, loud, blue-collar New Yorker who spouted racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic comments. He was cast against a scatter-brained wife he called "Dingbat," a liberal daughter and an even more liberal son-in-law he referred to as "Meathead" and played by Reiner.

"All in the Family" was the top-rated show on U.S. television for five straight years, according to CBS, and TV Guide ranked it fourth on its list of television's all-time greatest shows.

Born on July 27, 1922 in New Haven, Connecticut, Norman Milton Lear's most lasting creation was partly based on fact. Many of the harsh words that came out of Archie's mouth had first been spoken by Lear's own father, Herman Lear, who went to prison for selling fake bonds, and frequently told his wife to "stifle" herself and called his son "the laziest white kid I ever saw."

"I grew up in a family that lived at the top of its lungs and the ends of its nerves," Lear told Esquire magazine.

Some critics said the Archie Bunker character put a laughing face on bigotry but Lear said it only pointed to the complexity of humanity.

As with Bunker, the character was like none previously seen on U.S. television. Maude was on her fourth husband, protested marijuana laws and had an abortion before the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the procedure nationwide. Her husband battled alcoholism, had two nervous breakdowns and attempted suicide.

Black characters in U.S. television in the '70s were mostly limited to minor roles until Lear made them the focus of some of his shows.

"The Jeffersons" was another spin-off of "All in the Family" and featured an upwardly mobile Black couple who moved to Manhattan's glitzy upper eastside neighborhood. The show's lead character George was often rude and loud. Lear's other hits included "Sanford and Son" a sitcom about a Black junkyard owner in a Los Angeles neighborhood, and "Good Times," a protrayal of a working-class Black family in a Chicago housing project.

Other Lear-produced hits included "Diff'rent Strokes," "Fernwood 2 Night," and the "All in the Family" spin-off "Archie Bunker's Place." But Lear also had flops such as "All That Glitters," "Sunday Dinner" and another "All in the Family" spin-off, "Gloria."

Lear, who grew up in Connecticut, dropped out of college in World War Two to join the Army and flew 52 combat missions. He went to Los Angeles in 1950 with the intention of being a publicist but began writing for TV stars such as Danny Thomas, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin and Andy Williams.

Lear shifted focus in 1981 and founded the liberal activist group People for the American Way to boost voting rights and fight right-wing extremism. He also established the Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Communication.

In 2001, he and a partner purchased an original copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and sent it on a three-year tour of U.S. schools, libraries and events.

Lear is survived by his third wife, Lyn, and his six children. (Writing and reporting by Bill Trott; Additional reporting by Susan Heavey; Editing by Diane Craft)
