Markle Foundation:The Task Force on Security in the Information Age

Markle Foundation:The Task Force on Security in the Information Age
The Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 2002 "to determine how best to make information discoverable and accessible to the right officials at the right time to enable improved decision making with regard to major security threats against our nation.

Although the Markle Foundation Task Force claims that its purpose is to advance national security by promoting greater emphasis on information-sharing within government, it has been accused of being a covert lobbying group devoted to securing the transfer of taxpayer money to private information technology corporations.

Criticism
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Markle Foundation is supposedly prohibited from lobbying government officials. Nonetheless, it has been accussed of "actively and enthusiastically lobbying for more government spending on information technology. . . the increased expenditures and bureaucratic “reforms” advocated by the Markle Task Force are extremely beneficial to private contractors, which happen to be the very corporations and private interests represented in various official capacities by Task Force members and the Markle board of directors.

Markle Foundation Co-Chair Zoe Baird-- who first became famous after her nomination for President Bill Clinton's U.S. Attorney General was withdrawn amidst disclosures that she employed an illegal immigrant as a nanny and failed to pay Social Security taxes-- has also been accused of having a conflict of interest by sitting on the board of Convergys Corporation, which has a General Services Administration (GSA) contract for homeland security. . Report: NSA spied on pope

Report: NSA spied on pope
Francis, Benedict allegedly targets of intercepts
Jerome R. Corsi
“Data-gate” is the name the Vatican has unofficially given to allegations breaking in Rome that the NSA intercepted telephone conversations of Pope Benedict XVI and of Pope Francis when he was still Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires.

The weekly news Italian news magazine Panorama disclosed the allegations are scheduled to be published as a lead article Thursday.

The magazine reports suspicions that among the Vatican telephone calls intercepted by the NSA were conversations March 12 involving bishops and cardinals participating in the papal conclave. The Catholic leaders were staying at the Domus Internationalis Paulus VI, the hotel residence established by the Vatican for visiting clergy, where Bergoglio resided prior to being selected as pope.

The NSA issued a statement insisting it “does not target the Vatican.”

“Assertions that NSA has targeted the Vatican, published in Italy’s Panorama magazine, are not true,” the agency said.

Is a 900-year-old prophecy being fulfilled before our eyes? See the astounding movie “The Last Pope?”

The Panorama article reported suspicion the NSA monitoring of Bergoglio may date back to 2005. The article noted that U.S. State Department cables leaked by Wikileaks indicated Bergoglio was first placed under U.S. intelligence in 2005 when the U.S. Vatican Embassy reported to Washington that he was considered one of 16 candidates to succeed Pope John Paul II.

The Panorama article alleges that among the NSA intercepts were telephone conversations of Pope Benedict XVI in the last few weeks of his papacy.

Panorama charged the NSA intercepted the incoming and outgoing telephone calls of Pope Benedict XVI and other Vatican officials concerning one of Benedict’s last official acts, the selection of Ernst von Freyberg, a German aristocrat and industrialist, to head the Vatican Bank, which was announced Feb. 15.

Support a legal challenge to Barack Obama’s NSA spying programs.

Panorama reported the information obtained by the NSA intercepts were divided into four categories: “information intentions,” “threats to the financial system,” “foreign policy objectives” and “human rights.”

The magazine also suggested the NSA intercepted communications regarding the 2012 “Vatileaks” scandal involving Paolo Gabriel, Pope Benedict’s butler, who was caught stealing related to corruption within the Catholic Church.

Panorama charges the NSA spying was conducted from the annex of the U.S. Embassy in Rome, in via Sallustiana 49, a facility that supposedly houses a highly classified information collection service staffed by a nucleus of technical experts from the NSA and the CIA.

Rahm: 'Heads are rolling' over ObamaCare

Rahm: 'Heads are rolling' over ObamaCare
October 30, 2013, 07:12 pm
Chicago mayor and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday that he had been assured "that heads are rolling" over the technical problems plaguing the ObamaCare website.

“I have all the confidence and I — and all the assurance that heads are rolling and they're spinning right now to fix the problem," Emanuel told CNN.

Emanuel said that the president's focus was fixing the technical issues underlying the ObamaCare website. Users have been unable to open accounts and purchase insurance on the portal, which was billed by the administration as the easiest way for uninsured consumers to find coverage.

Insurance companies report that even when consumers successfully purchase a plan, bad data is then transmitted from the government.

"We'll deal with culpability later, because the most important thing you've got to do is get the problem fixed," Emanuel said.

During a speech Wednesday in Boston, Obama said there was “no excuse” for the technical glitches and that he took “full responsibility for making sure it gets fixed.”

“The website is too slow, too many people have gotten stuck, and I am not happy about it,” Obama said. “Neither are a lot of Americans who need health care.”

But the administration has so far publicly resisted calls to fire officials over the botched rollout.

In an interview with CNN last week, White House press secretary said that "it shouldn't be about having heads roll or firing people."

"The accountability [President Obama is] looking for is the accountability of making sure that everybody who has expertise in this matter is focused on fixing it, not focused on, you know, making heads roll," he continued. "That's not the time right now to focus on that. The time is to get these problems fixed, make sure the system is working most efficiently for the American people. That is what his focus is on right now."

Google and Yahoo furious over reports that NSA secretly intercepts data links

Google and Yahoo furious over reports that NSA secretly intercepts data links
Leaked files suggest NSA can collect information 'at will' by intercepting cables that connect Google and Yahoo's data hubs
Google and Yahoo, two of the world's biggest tech companies, reacted angrily to a report on Wednesday that the National Security Agency has secretly intercepted the main communication links that carry their users' data around the world.

Citing documents obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden and interviews with officials, the Washington Post claimed the agency could collect information "at will" from among hundreds of millions of user accounts.

The documents suggest that the NSA, in partnership with its British counterpart GCHQ, is copying large amounts of data as it flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the worldwide data centers of the Silicon Valley giants.

The story is likely to put further strain on the already difficult relations between the tech firms and Washington. The internet giants are furious about the damage done to their reputation in the wake of Snowden's revelations.

In a statement, Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, said the company was "outraged" by the latest revelations.

"We have long been concerned about the possibility of this kind of snooping, which is why we have continued to extend encryption across more and more Google services and links, especially the links in the slide," he said.

"We do not provide any government, including the US government, with access to our systems. We are outraged at the lengths to which the government seems to have gone to intercept data from our private fiber networks, and it underscores the need for urgent reform."

Yahoo said: "We have strict controls in place to protect the security of our data centers, and we have not given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency."

According to a top-secret document cited by the Post dated 9 January 2013, millions of records a day are sent from Yahoo and Google internal networks to NSA data warehouses at the agency's headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland. The types of information sent ranged from "metadata", indicating who sent or received emails, the subject line and where and when, to content such as text, audio and video.

The Post's documents state that in the preceding 30 days, field collectors had processed and sent on 181,280,466 new records.

Internet firms go to great lengths to protect their data. But the NSA documents published by the Post appear to boast about their ability to circumvent those protections. In one presentation slide on "Google Cloud Exploitation," published by the Post, an artist has added a smiley face, in apparent celebration of the NSA's victory over Google security systems.

The latest disclosures may shed new light on a reference in a GCHQ document, first reported in September by the Guardian, the New York Times and ProPublica. As part of its efforts with the NSA to defeat internet encryption, GCHQ, the 2012 document said, was working on developing ways into the major webmail providers, including Google and Yahoo. It added that "work has predominantly been focused this quarter on Google due to new access opportunities being developed".

In its report, the Post suggested the intercept project was codenamed Muscular, but the Guardian understands from other documents provided by Snowden that the term instead refers to the system that enables the initial processing of information gathered from NSA or GCHQ cable taps.

The data outputted from Muscular is then forwarded to NSA or GCHQ databases, or systems such as the XKeyscore search tool, previously reported by the Guardian.

The Post said the program allowed the NSA to circumvent the legal restrictions that prevent it from accessing the data of people who live in the United States, and that it fell instead under an executive order, signed by the president, that authorised foreign intelligence operations.

In response, the NSA specifically denied that it used the presidential order to circumvent the restrictions on domestic spying, though the agency said nothing about the rest of the story.

The NSA statement said, in full: "NSA has multiple authorities that it uses to accomplish its mission, which is centered on defending the nation. The Washington Post's assertion that we use Executive Order 12333 collection to get around the limitations imposed by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and FAA 702 is not true.

"The assertion that we collect vast quantities of US persons' data from this type of collection is also not true. NSA applies attorney general-approved processes to protect the privacy of US persons – minimizing the likelihood of their information in our targeting, collection, processing, exploitation, retention, and dissemination.

"NSA is a foreign intelligence agency. And we're focused on discovering and developing intelligence about valid foreign intelligence targets only."

A GCHQ spokesman said: "We are aware of the story but we don't have any comment."

The NSA statement was much more narrowly drawn than the initial response by the agency's director, General Keith Alexander. At a Washington conference on Wednesday as the Post story broke, Alexander issued an immediate denial, but was not specifically asked to address allegations that NSA intercepted data transiting between the companies' data centers.

Relations between the tech companies and the government are already strained over the Snowden revelations. Speaking at a tech conference in September, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said the government had done a "bad job" of balancing people's privacy. "Frankly, I think the government blew it," he said.

Google will have its first turn before a legislative panel to confront surveillance questions next month. Senators Al Franken and Dean Heller, who are backing a bill to compel the government to provide more transparency about bulk surveillance, announced Wednesday that the Internet giant will send a representative to a Senate hearing they will hold on 13 November.

These White Boxes Hiding in Plain Sight All Over the World May Be a U.S. Government Spy Tool

These White Boxes Hiding in Plain Sight All Over the World May Be a U.S. Government Spy Tool
Oct. 30, 2013 7:42am Sharona Schwartz
The German newspaper Der Spiegel over the weekend revealed that not only did the U.S. monitor the cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it also allegedly utilized the American embassy in Berlin as a listening station by means of a windowless structure filled with hi-tech gadgetry on the roof to monitor cellphone and other sensitive communications.

An Israeli intelligence analyst has now discovered similar mysterious white structures positioned on the rooftops of many key American embassies including in Beijing, Moscow, and Tel Aviv and published the photos to support his claims. While the structures appear to have a solid exterior, they are actually permeable by communication signals, according to the German report.

Der Spiegel described attic-like rooms positioned on the roof of the embassy in Berlin from which the CIA and NSA are able to monitor “a large part of cellphone communication” in the epicenter of the German government, calling the operation “a nest of espionage.”

The paper, which cites both German and U.S. sources, reports that the structures are designed to appear as integral parts of the buildings, but in reality they hide technology used for sophisticated electronic surveillance. It reports that the structures are covered by a material “permeable even by weak radio signals.”

Intelligence analyst Ronen Solomon tells the Israeli newspaper Ma’ariv that the “boxes” conceal “very advanced wiretapping devices.”

Solomon examined photographs of the white structures on the roofs of the U.S. embassies in Tel Aviv, Madrid, Moscow, Beijing, Berlin and Stockholm.

“In all of the cases, it seems as though the ‘cubes,’ while appearing as part of the structure, are actually construction supplements. If the findings of Der Spiegel are correct, then the US intelligence agency’s listening devices are dispersed around the world,” Ma’ariv reported.

Here is a montage of the photos published on the Hebrew website Ma’ariv:

Israeli officials say that they are not surprised by the reports and that the assumption in Israel has always been that “the US listens in on all of the conversations taking place in the Middle East, as well as in Europe, especially if they are unencrypted,” the paper reports.

For this reason, Israeli defense officials are prohibited from discussing “top secret” information over any phone line, even encrypted ones. Classified information can be conveyed only via envelopes with a wax seal, Maariv reports.

Spiegel cited a “top secret” NSA document from 2010 which revealed a unit called the “Special Collection Service” (SCS) which operates in 80 locations overseas including in Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Rome. The paper described the unit as “an elite corps run in concert by the US intelligence agencies NSA and CIA.”

Former Mossad chief Danny Yatom told Ma’ariv on Friday that he is “certain” the U.S. “has been listening in on its allies, including Israel.”

The Times of Israel reports Yatom believes the U.S. is most likely spying on Israel to learn more about the government’s position on negotiations with the Palestinians and about Iran’s nuclear program.

“It is important for them to know what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu really thinks…They have interests here because they want to be able to contend with Israeli claims that arise when talking about these issues,” the Times of Israel quoted Yatom as saying.

While TheBlaze has not verified the photos shown by Ma’ariv, other online photos of various U.S. embassies do appear to show boxlike structures on the roofs.

Ma’ariv’s full report was translated to English on the website of Israel Defense magazine and can be found here.
