Fallout from the Trump administration's Signal chat fiasco has resulted in at least three National Security Council staffers being fired.

National security adviser Mike Waltz inadvertently added Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of The Atlantic magazine, to a March 11 group text using the Signal encrypted messaging service where top officials were discussing plans to attack the Houthis in Yemen.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump made his clearest commitment to not fire anyone over the accidental leak of his administration's plans for an airstrike against the Houthis.

However, sources told Axios that several NSC members have been fired. CNN reported three NSC staffers were fired.

Axios added that its source said several people had been fired, possibly as many as 10, including senior directors.

Brian Walsh, a director for intelligence and a former top staffer for Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Thomas Boodry, a senior director for legislative affairs who previously served as Waltz's legislative director in Congress, and David Feith, a senior director overseeing technology and national security who served in the State Department during Trump's first administration were the three NSC officials let go, CNN reported.

The outlet added the firings followed conservative influencer Laura Loomer's Wednesday visit to the Oval Office.

"I woke up this morning to learn that there are still people in and around the West Wing who are LEAKING to the hostile, left-wing media about President Trump’s *confidential* and *private* meetings in the Oval Office," Loomer posted late-morning Thursday on X.

"I want to reiterate how important it is that people who gain access to the White House or the administration respect the privacy of their conversations with President Trump and his senior staff."

Adding that she would not divulge "any details about my Oval Office meeting with President Trump," Loomer said: "It was an honor to meet with President Trump and present him with my research findings. I will continue working hard to support his agenda, and I will continue reiterating the importance of, and the necessity of STRONG VETTING, for the sake of protecting the President of the United States of America, and our national security."

One U.S. official told Axios that Loomer was furious that "neocons," Bush administration veterans with hawkish foreign policy views, had "slipped through" the vetting process for administration jobs.

The Trump administration Thursday threatened to withhold federal Title I funding from public schools nationwide unless state education officials prove that programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion have been eliminated. 

The Department of Education sent out a memo to top public education officials to threaten the removal of the funding, which goes to districts with high percentages of students from low-income families, reports The New York Times.

The memo was sent out with a certification letter that state and local officials are required to sign and return within 10 days. 

"Federal financial assistance is a privilege, not a right," Craig Trainor, the acting assistant education secretary for civil rights, said in a statement Thursday. "When state education commissioners accept federal funds, they agree to abide by federal anti-discrimination requirements."

The administration, however, has not defined which programs violate how it interprets civil rights laws. 

In her confirmation hearing in February, Education Secretary Linda McMahon agreed that schools should be allowed to celebrate the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., but said she was "not quite certain" about whether classes focusing on Black history were acceptable as part of President Donald Trump's agenda. 

The Education Department more recently, though, said an assessment of school policies depends on "the facts and circumstances of each case" and that programs that recognize historical events and contributions would not be in violation if they "do not engage in racial exclusion or discrimination."

Schools, however, must consider if their program discourages members of all races from participating or creates hostile environments. 

According to the Pew Research Foundation, the federal government is responsible for about 8% of local school funding, but the amounts districts get depend on income levels. Mississippi gets about 23% of school funding from the U.S. government, but in New York, 7% comes from Washington.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told reporters Thursday that she's "concerned" that the Medicaid could face cuts under the Senate budget resolution currently being considered by legislators.

Collins cited language in the bill that instructs the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to "reduce the deficit by not less than $880 billion" between 2025 and 2034.

"I'm concerned about the instruction to the House Committee for $880 billion, it's the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House, which has jurisdiction over Medicaid, because I don't see how you can get to that amount without cutting Medicaid benefits," Collins said.

"In my state, there are more than 400,000 Mainers that rely on that health care program. Our rural hospitals depend upon it as well, and they are really struggling because of actions and inactions by the state Legislature. So the last thing I want to do is cut Medicaid for vulnerable people who are disabled or seniors who cannot work."

Collins' comments came on the same day that America's Essential Hospitals, a group that represents hospitals and medical centers, sent a letter to congressional leaders warning that "the proposed changes to Medicaid are significant and threaten the ability of essential hospitals and other safety net providers to stay open, especially in underserved areas in all corners of the nation."
