Reacts to Orlando Shooting: ‘It’s Inexcusable'
June 13, 2016
Earlier today, “Scandal” star Kerry Washington spoke to “Extra" about Saturday's mass
shooting in Orlando, which took the lives of 49 victims.
At the SAG-AFTRA Foundation 7th annual L.A. Golf Classic,
where she received the Actors Inspiration Award, Washington commented, “It’s so
devastating what happened in Orlando, and I just wonder what it’s going to take
for us to create some real reform around gun control in this country.”
Kerry, who is expecting her second child with husband
Nnamdi Asomugha, added, “My heart just goes out to the LBGT community, it’s not ok for
there to be such acts of hate, it’s inexcusable… It’s also scary to me that you
can put somebody on a no-fly list, but that same person can walk into a store
and buy a gun.”
As for her award, the actress noted how ironic it was to
receive an honor from SAG-AFTRA since when she was younger, she didn’t think
acting was something she could pursue. She shared, “When I learned about actor
unions… I thought, ‘Well, if there are unions that exist that must mean that
thousands of people are actually able to make a living. Even if you’re not
famous, you’re able to do what you love to do — that’s what encouraged me to
pursue this career.”
