Americans are staunchly divided on how they feel President Donald Trump is handling his job, a Pew Research poll found.

According to the poll released Friday, 47% approve of how the president is handling his role with 37% strongly approving, and 51% disapprove with 40% strongly disapproving.

The poll showed stark divisions along partisan lines, with 84% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents approving of Trump's performance, compared to just 10% of Democrats and Democratic leaners. The partisan gap is consistent with his first term, though broader than in its final weeks, when Republican support had dropped.

Public opinion on Trump's policies was fractured, with 42% supporting most or some of his agenda, and 47% in support of few or none of policies; 9% supported all of his policies. Most Americans, 73%, believe Trump has clear goals, but it was mostly Republicans who think he will be successful.

Confidence in Trump's leadership and fitness for office was mixed. While 40% believe he has the leadership skills to govern, fewer expressed confidence in his ability to choose good advisers, with 31% expressing confidence in his picks and 51% having little or no confidence.

The survey of 5,086 randomly selected U.S. adults was conducted from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 1.6 percentage points.
