Ross Perot Jr.
has been named the new chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as it lobbies for policies it
believes will achieve 3% economic growth, Axios
reported.
While
the influential lobbying group supports President Donald Trump's efforts to
relax regulations and extend his tax cut, the Chamber is worried about the
impact tariffs will have on small businesses and the economy, Axios said.
"This
year is going to be tough," Perot told Axios. "We're waiting for the
tax code, and so you've got a little bit of uncertainty there. Then I think
people are waiting on where we are going to go on tariffs. Once that settles
down, we can all go to work."
The
Chamber said tariffs could cause some businesses to go bankrupt and is pushing
for the administration to exempt businesses with less than 20 employees from
them.
"The
margins are so tight on their product that they can't pass the price on, and
they get caught," Perot told Axios.
Overall,
Perot, the son of former two-time third party presidential candidate Ross
Perot, said the Chamber maintains a strong relationship with the Republican
Party.
"I
think we had issues in the past. But today, I see very strong
relationships," Perot told Axios, noting he agrees with the Trump agenda
more than he disagrees with it. "If you're for business and if you're for
pro-growth and deregulation — and that's what the Republican Party stands for —
the Chamber is full force behind helping get your job done, including
reelection."
The
Chamber recently announced a six-figure ad campaign in support of the One
Big Beautiful Bill Act that will fund President Donald Trump's domestic policy
agenda.
The Chamber
said its advertising blitz, set to begin this week, targets
"misinformation" about the tax policy bill and is part of the group's
larger advocacy centering on tax efforts.
