Brady Campaign
Honors Katie Couric for Discredited Gun Control Documentary
by AWR Hawkins 17 Nov 2016
The Brady Campaign to
Prevent Gun Violence gave Katie Couric an
award for the gun control documentary over
which she faces a defamation suit for $12 million.
The documentary — Under the Gun — drew a
lawsuit from the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) over “misleading” edits
that made VCDL members appear stumped by Katie Couric’s line of gun control
questions.
At the heart of the edits was an eight-second pause which
made it look like the VCDL members were at a loss when questioned by Couric.
On May 27, 2016, Breitbart News reported
Couric’s admission that she regretted the insertion of the pause. The Wrap quoted
a source close to Couric saying: “This was an unnecessary mistake. It did
not represent editing someone’s sentences. There was no factual error. This is
not a mistake that is a substantive mistake. It could have been avoided. This
was a poor decision that was made, and it involves silence.”
But VCDL wants the record corrected and they filed a
defamation suit to ensure that it is. CBS 6 reported on the defamation suit and
quoted VCDL president Philip Van Cleave saying:
We were horrified to see how Couric and her team
manipulated us and the video footage to make us look like fools who didn’t
stand up for the Second Amendment. We want to set the record straight and hold
them accountable for what they’ve done. You shouldn’t intentionally
misrepresent someone’s views just because you disagree with them.
Yet the Brady Campaign awarded
Couric a “Bear Award” for the documentary. PEOPLE magazine reported the award without
any mention of the “misleading” edits or the defamation suit. Rather, they
said, “Couric was also honored for her gun violence prevention film,
Under the Gun.”
