House
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Wednesday he supports impeachment efforts
against two federal judges, citing what he called "egregious abuses"
and judicial overreach aimed at President Donald Trump and executive authority,
The Hill reported.
At a
press conference, Johnson was asked about calls from Republicans to move
forward with impeachment articles against U.S. District Judge
James Boasberg of the District of Columbiaand
U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman of Maryland.
"I'm
for it," Johnson said. "Judge Boasberg is one who's been mentioned.
And these are some egregious abuses."
Johnson
emphasized his background in constitutional law and his prior service on the
House Judiciary Committee, which would handle any impeachment proceedings.
While acknowledging impeachment is a serious step, he argued that their rulings
justify congressional action.
"Impeachment
... is an extreme measure. But extreme times call for extreme
measures," Johnson said.
"I
think some of these judges have gotten so far outside the bounds of where
they're supposed to operate, it would not be, in my view, a bad thing for
Congress to lay down law, so to speak, and, you know, to make an example of
some of these egregious abuses."
Johnson
stopped short of committing to bringing impeachment articles to the House
floor, saying only, "We'll see where it goes."
Republicans
have increasingly targeted Boasberg over rulings that blocked Trump
administration efforts, including orders preventing deportations under the
Alien Enemies Act and directing planes carrying illegal aliens to turn around.
Rep.
Brandon Gill, R-Texas, introduced impeachment
articles against Boasberg last March, accusing him of abuse of power. That
resolution had 23 co-sponsors.
Gill
later filed a second impeachment resolution tied to Boasberg's role in
approving nondisclosure orders related to subpoenas issued during former
special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into alleged 2020 election
interference.

the Justice Department to secretly obtain phone records of multiple Republicans
in Congress.
Boardman
has drawn similar scrutiny from Republicans over her sentencing decision in the
case involving Sophie Roske, who traveled across the country with the intent to
assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Boardman sentenced Roske to
eight years in prison, far below what prosecutors sought.
Rep.
Chip Roy, R-Texas, introduced impeachment articles against Boardman last fall,
accusing her of a "willful and systemic refusal to comply with the
law."

San
Francisco has filed a first-of-its-kind lawsuit against some of the country’s
largest food and beverage manufacturers, accusing them of engineering and
aggressively marketing ultra-processed foods they knew were making Americans
sick in order to boost profits.
The complaint,
filed on Dec. 2 in San Francisco Superior Court, targets nearly a dozen major
corporations, including Kraft Heinz, Mondelēz
International,
Post Holdings, Coca-Cola,
PepsiCo,
General Mills,
Nestle USA, Kellanova, WK Kellogg, Mars, and Conagra
Brands. It alleges
that the companies’ ultra-processed food products have fueled epidemics of
obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers while saddling
governments with soaring health care costs.
“These
companies created a public health crisis with the engineering and marketing of
ultra-processed foods,” San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said
when announcing the suit.
“They
took food and made it unrecognizable and harmful to the human body. ... These
companies engineered a public health crisis, they profited handsomely, and now
they need to take responsibility for the harm they have caused.
City
Says Companies Engineered Products to Be Addictive
The
lawsuit, brought on behalf of the people of the state of California, claims
that the defendants violated the state’s Unfair Competition Law and public
nuisance statute through unfair and deceptive marketing. It seeks to halt
alleged deceptive practices, require corrective measures, and obtain
restitution and civil penalties to help offset health costs tied to
ultra-processed food consumption.
“Defendants
did everything in their power to deprive consumers of an informed choice,” the
complaint states. “They designed food to be addictive, they knew the addictive
food they were engineering was making their customers sick, and they hid the
truth from the public. They relentlessly promoted these dangerous products,
made untold billions of dollars from doing so, and then they left taxpayers to
foot the bill for the resulting public health crisis.”
Ultra-processed
foods are described in the complaint as former whole foods that have been
broken down; chemically modified; combined with additives such as artificial
sweeteners, emulsifiers, and colorants; and reassembled using industrial
techniques. They include sodas, energy drinks, boxed macaroni and cheese,
breakfast cereals, chips, candies, and many processed meats.
Over
roughly the same period in which such foods came to
dominate the U.S. diet, obesity rates have surged and diagnoses of
Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and
colorectal cancer in younger adults have climbed, the filing notes.
A
24-year study
published on Nov. 13 in JAMA Oncology found that young people with the highest
intake of ultra-processed foods had 45 percent higher odds of early-onset
colorectal adenomas—colon polyps that often precede cancer—than those with the
lowest intake. Researchers said the risk appeared to rise in a “fairly linear”
way as consumption increased, “meaning that the more ultra-processed foods [a
person eats], the more potential that it could lead to colon polyps.”
Federal
data point to how widespread these foods have become. A recent Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention brief
estimates that 55 percent of total calories consumed by Americans aged 1 and
older now come from ultra-processed products such as burgers, pizza, sweet
baked goods, and sugary drinks. Among youth aged 1 to 18, the share rose to
nearly 62 percent of calories.
Health
Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again Commission has warned
that such diets lead to nutrient depletion, increased intake of calories, and
exposure to harmful additives, and has urged
a shift toward minimally processed, whole foods. Multiple federal agencies,
including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug
Administration, and the Department of Agriculture, are working
on a uniform federal definition of ultra-processed foods as part of
a broader diet-related disease strategy.
San
Francisco’s complaint also draws a direct line between “Big Tobacco” and “Big
Food,” noting that cigarette makers R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris bought
major food companies in the 1960s and 1970s and applied their expertise in
creating and marketing addictive products to snacks, beverages, and other
packaged foods. The filing alleges that companies intentionally designed
products to trigger cravings and targeted children with intensive advertising.
“These
companies were extraordinarily successful,” the complaint states, noting that
ultra-processed foods now make up more than 70 percent of grocery store
products and more than half of the diets of individuals in the United States.
“[Ultra-processed
foods] sit on the pantry shelves of nearly every household in America, and
American children get two-thirds of their daily energy from [these products],”
the complaint reads.
The
companies named in the lawsuit did not respond to requests for comment.
In a
statement responding to the lawsuit, the Consumer Brands Association, which represents many of the
companies named, defended its members and questioned the scientific basis for
the city’s claims.
“The
makers of America’s trusted household brands support Americans in making
healthier choices and enhancing product transparency,” Sarah Gallo, senior vice
president of product policy and federal affairs at the trade group, said in a
statement to The Epoch Times.
She
said manufacturers are offering products with “increased protein and fiber,
reduced sugars and sodium, and no synthetic color additives,” noting that
“there is currently no agreed-upon scientific definition of ultra-processed
foods.”
“Attempting
to classify foods as unhealthy simply because they are processed, or demonizing
food by ignoring its full nutrient content, misleads consumers and exacerbates
health disparities,” Gallo said, noting that companies “adhere to the rigorous
evidence-based safety standards established by the [Food and Drug
Administration].”
The
case is expected to draw close attention from public health groups and the food
industry as a possible test case for using tobacco-style litigation against
makers of ultra-processed foods.
Consumer
Brands Association (CBA), Formerly The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA)
The Consumer Brands Association (CBA),
formerly the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA),[1] is a United States-wide trade association for manufacturers of consumer packaged goods (CPG).
The CBA represents companies that manufacture
food, beverages, household, and personal care products. As of December 2020,
the CBA represented more than 1,700 brands.[2] Since the CBA's rebranding in 2020, 18
companies have joined it, increasing growth by more than 30%. As of 2021, the
CBA represents 73 CPG companies with nearly 2,000 brands.
History
The Consumer Brands Association
(CBA)was founded in 1908 as the American Specialty Manufacturers Association,
which consisted of 45 food and branded-product manufacturers in New York City.[4] It was headquartered at 2401 Pennsylvania
Avenue, Washington, D.C.[5]
Since its founding, the association has
helped draft legislation such as the Federal Food,
Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938, which gave the Food and Drug Association (FDA)regulatory
authority and credited innovations, like the Universal Product Code (also
known as the UPC bar code) in the 1970s. A digital disclosure tool called
SmartLabel was launched in 2015.
On January 1, 2007, the association merged
with the Food Products Association and
formed the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), the world's largest trade association representing the food, beverage, and
consumer products industry (GMA/FPA).
After two outbreaks of salmonella in 2006-2007,[6][7] members of the GMA made efforts "to
reassess industry practices for eliminating salmonella in low-moisture
products".[8]
In 2022, the association paid $9 million to
settle a lawsuit by the State of Washington, for violating the states's
campaign disclosure law when the association opposed a GMO-labeling ballot
initiative, Initiative 522, in 2013.
Advocacy
initiatives
On
December 5, 2013, the GMA sent a petition to the FDA to support a new rule
allowing food that is made with genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
to be labeled as natural.[10]
In
September 2019, the association announced it would relaunch itself as the Consumer
Brands Association (CBA) in January 2020.[15] The
rebranded association focused on representing the CPG industry and a new,
consumer-centric agenda.[16]
In May
2020, the CBA launched the Critical Infrastructure Supply Chain Council
(CISCC), an integrated resolution of 35 or more trade associations that address
short- and long-term supply chain problems.[17]
CBA
advocates on behalf of the CPG industry to Congress, state legislatures, and
administration officials. The CBA's advocacy program focuses on:[18]
·"Frictionless
Supply Chains" is focused on promoting goods to consumers through frictionless supply chains;
·"Packaging
Sustainability" aims to increase recyclability and redesign the current US
recycling system;
·"Smart
Regulations" advocates for federal regulations;
·"Trust
in CPG" commits GPG to selling consumers safe, reliable products.
Programs
and initiatives
·Better
Process Control School - The CBA hosts training for companies that produce
low-acid and acidified foods, like tomato sauces, pickled products, and some
pet foods. It fulfills FDA and USDA requirements in acidification, thermal processing,
and container closure evaluation operations during the canning.[20][21][22]
·Facts
Up Front - A program of the CBA and Food Marketing Institute, this labeling
system displays nutrition information on the front of food and beverage
packages.
·Hands-on
Classrooms - Provides free resources for students, teachers, administrators,
and parents about food safety, systems, and processing.
·The
Food Waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA) - A collaborative effort of the CBA,
the National Restaurant Association,
and the Food Industry Association to
reduce the volume of food waste being sent to landfills, donate more food to
people in need, and recycle unavoidable food waste.
·The
Smart Label platform[23] -
launched in 2015, it hosts detailed information about around 80,000 products
from more than 1,000 participating brands.

"Though defensive violence will always be 'a sad necessity' in the eyes of men of principle, it would be still more unfortunate if wrongdoers should dominate just men." - St. Augustine
"A new idea is first condemned as ridiculous, and then dismissed as trivial, until finally it becomes what everybody knows." -
William James
"This is the real task before us: to reassert our commitment as a nation to a law higher than our own, to renew our spiritual strength. Only by building a wall of such spiritual resolve can we, as a free people, hope to protect our own heritage and make it someday the birthright of all men." --Ronald Reagan
A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government." -- Edward Abbey
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." John Stuart Mill
"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." ~~~George Washington
"I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 400 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than to the faculty of Harvard University." William F. Buckley, Jr.
"Conservatives are enemies of the government. Liberals are enemies of the nation because they are not enemies of the government." Aristotle the Hun
"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" Albert Einstein
"Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ANON
"That government is best which governs least." Thomas Paine
“A nation that substitutes emotion and empathy for rational thought will eventually digress into the Dark Ages,” Congressman Steve King (R-IA),
INTEGRITY: The highest courage is to dare to be ourself in the face of adversity. Choosing ethics over convenience and truth over popularity means there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.
The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
They may be more likely to go to Heaven for good intentions yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.~ C. S. Lewis
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." ANON

This blog was started to give people a source of information they can trust. I almost never make the mistake of including scams, false rumors, or poorly researched items. I encourage readers to alert me if they spot an anomaly. It will be quickly corrected.
The search function is in the upper left hand corner. Readers are invited to cut and paste from this blog to your own emails. Each subject title has an embedded link so cut and paste the title and the first few lines. That will direct a person back to this blog.
Below the usual ad and personal profile you will find links to topics located on the right hand side of the page. You may find it easier to select topics of interest to you rather than scrolling all topics as they occur chronologically. (Gee, that's a six syllable word!)
The government is conspiring against the citizens. The citizens have pitchforks, torches, tea bags, tea parties, Grand Juries and the Constitution. The government doesn't stand a chance!
