Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins said she has "an extremely common" medical condition that's treated with medication and has no impact on how she does her job.

In an interview with News Center Maine, the 73-year-old Collins said she has lived for decades with a benign essential tremor, a condition that can cause shaking in the hands, head, or voice, but is not linked to cognitive decline or serious neurological disease.

"I have had it for the entire time that I have served in the United States Senate," she said. "It has absolutely no impact on my ability to do my job or on how I feel each day."

The disclosure comes as Collins prepares for what is expected to be one of the nation's most competitive Senate races in 2026.

Democrats have increasingly targeted the longtime senator as they seek to regain control of the Senate, while leftist critics online have circulated clips pointing to visible shakiness during public appearances.

Collins pushed back strongly against suggestions that the condition affects her ability to serve.

"If you talk to anybody in Washington, they will tell you that I am the hardest-working person that they have ever worked with," she said, noting she has never missed a Senate floor vote during nearly 30 years in office — a streak approaching 10,000 consecutive votes.

Medical experts interviewed by News Center Maine said essential tremor is common, especially among older adults, and should not be confused with conditions such as Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's.

"It's not associated with cognitive decline or memory decline," Dr. Rees Cosgrove of Mass General Brigham told the outlet. "It's not Parkinson's disease."

Collins said the tremor has occasionally been "the subject of cruel comments online," but emphasized it "does not hinder my ability to work," The New York Times reported.

Questions surrounding age and health have become increasingly prominent in national politics following concerns over former President Joe Biden's fitness while in office.

Collins is expected to face Democrat challenger Graham Platner, a 41-year-old Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and oyster farmer.

Considered an extremist by Republicans, Platner has publicly discussed health issues tied to his military service, including PTSD, herniated discs, and a Veterans Affairs disability rating.

Despite Maine's leftward shift in recent presidential elections, Collins has repeatedly survived tough reelection fights by cultivating an image as an experienced, pragmatic lawmaker willing to work across the aisle while still supporting core Republican priorities.

In her latest interview, Collins made clear she has no doubts about continuing to serve.

"It's inconvenient at times, but that's all," she said.
