America's two largest oil companies reported record or near-record quarterly profits Friday as the global energy market continues to grapple with supply disruptions caused by the war with Iran and tightening refining capacity worldwide.

According to a Financial Times report, ExxonMobil and Chevron earned a combined $26.5 billion during the second quarter, fueled by higher oil production, soaring refining margins, and elevated gasoline and diesel prices.

Chevron posted a record quarterly profit of $12.2 billion, nearly five times higher than a year ago.

ExxonMobil reported $14.5 billion in net income, double last year's level and its strongest quarterly earnings since the energy price spike following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The companies have increased production to near-record levels while operating their refineries at close to maximum capacity in an effort to meet demand as the conflict in the Middle East has reduced oil production across the Gulf region and disrupted refining operations.

Neil Hansen, ExxonMobil's chief financial officer, warned that additional price increases could be ahead if disruptions continue.

"As long as these disruptions continue, it is going to continue to impact the global energy system," Hansen told the Financial Times, noting that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries and China's decision to reduce petroleum product exports are also tightening global supplies.

He emphasized that the greatest pressure is not crude oil itself but refined products such as gasoline and diesel because of shrinking worldwide refining capacity.

The refining sector is benefiting even more dramatically from the shortage.

Valero Energy reported second-quarter net income of $3.7 billion, more than five times its profit from a year earlier. HF Sinclair nearly quadrupled earnings to $892 million, while PBF Energy swung from a loss last year to more than $1 billion in profit.

The surge in refining profits comes as global refinery capacity has become increasingly constrained, allowing operators with available capacity to command significantly higher margins.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly pressed for lower gasoline prices.

Last month, Trump directed the Department of Justice to investigate whether energy companies and gasoline retailers were engaging in price gouging, echoing a tactic previously used by the Biden administration after fuel prices surged following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In a Truth Social post in late June, Trump issued a blunt warning to retailers: "Gasoline Retailers must get their Prices down, IMMEDIATELY. If Retailers don't do this, big problems lie ahead!"

Trump has also said gasoline prices should fall to about $2.25 per gallon, arguing that lower crude oil prices and increased domestic energy production should translate into major savings for motorists.

"We're going to get those prices way down," Trump has said.

National average gasoline prices remain well above that target. According to AAA, regular gasoline currently averages about $4.11 per gallon nationwide, more than $1.80 above Trump's stated goal.

The Trump administration has also responded to gas prices by seeking to expand U.S. refining capacity rather than restricting domestic energy production.

White House officials have confirmed efforts to reopen shuttered refineries, including the strategically located St. Croix refinery in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which was originally designed to process heavy Venezuelan crude oil.

The administration has also expressed support for constructing additional refining capacity to strengthen America's energy security and help reduce gasoline prices.

At the same time, Venezuelan crude has become an increasingly important source of supply for American refiners.

Federal data show imports of Venezuelan oil have climbed from roughly 110,000 barrels per day in January to approximately 575,000 barrels daily by June, the highest level since 2018.

Texas and Louisiana refineries, which are specifically configured to process Venezuela's heavy crude, have absorbed most of those imports. Analysts say the additional Venezuelan supply has helped offset lost shipments from the Middle East as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have curtailed traditional Gulf exports.

Industry analysts caution that while oil companies are likely to face political criticism over higher gasoline prices, today's market conditions are fundamentally driven by global supply disruptions rather than excessive corporate pricing.

With refining capacity constrained across multiple regions, energy companies that can continue operating at full capacity are generating exceptional profits while attempting to satisfy worldwide demand during one of the most significant energy supply shocks in recent years.
