California Gov. Jerry Brown is traveling to Mexico for three days of meetings and will discuss immigration with President Enrique Pena Nieto and separately with Central American diplomatic and religious leaders.

The governor's office announced Sunday that Brown will sit down Monday with Nieto and separately with Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs, whom the governor met with last week in Sacramento.

The meeting Tuesday with more than a dozen Central American leaders comes as a surge of unaccompanied young migrants and families mostly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala have crossed the U.S. border since October.

The governor's trade mission aims to increase direct investments in California, promote university exchanges and form environmental partnerships to combat climate change.

The trip includes a delegation of more than 100 state government, business, economic development, investment and policy leaders.
