Students at American University in Washington, D.C. were directed to shelter in place Wednesday night after a report of a gunman on campus.

Just before 8:00 p.m., the university issued alerts to students requiring them to lockdown because a man with a gun had been reported.

The lockdown was lifted shortly before 9:30 p.m, the university said.

“All clear. Campus is all clear, the lockdown is lifted. Campus may resume operations. Suspect is in custody,” AU’s public safety department tweeted.

D.C. Metropolitan Police and university public safety officials investigated the initial report.

Less than an hour after the first alert, the university’s public safety office released a photo of a young man and woman on a bus, warning people to “not approach” them.

Officials posted in an update online that a “citizen” reported seeing a man with a gun to campus police.

Ambulances had been spotted on campus, but no shots were reported, the university student newspaper, The Eagle, reported.

No further details were immedately available about the suspect in custody.
