National Public Radio announced a major new expansion into multimedia and digital platforms Monday thanks to $17 million in new grants from four foundations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Joining the foundation established by the Microsoft founder is the Knight Foundation, the Wallace Foundation and the Ford Foundation, along with individual donors.

Although a large portion of the new funds will be devoted to technological advances allowing listeners to access NPR content across multiple platforms, the new grants will also be devoted to covering topics such as education, global health and development and race and culture.

"This support will allow NPR to build transformative platforms that secure the future of public media journalism, and represents a powerful vote of confidence for that vision," said Kinsey Wilson, NPR's Chief Content Officer who leads its news, programming, music and digital teams. "We'll be able to dive deep into issues that are at the center of people's lives, and drive tremendous innovation in how we engage people with those issues."
