Sony Agrees to Terms to Stream ‘The Interview’
by Kipp Jones24 Dec 2014Los Angeles, CA
It was announced Wednesday that Youtube,
Google Play, and XBOX Live had all agreed to
stream The Interview for Sony, which will coincide with a limited theatrical
release through a small number of American movie theaters.
Sony will reportedly make The Interview available as
an online rental.
CNN‘s Brian Stelter stated that the original
YouTube deal was “tentative” and that his “sources cautioned that the deal
could still fall apart.”
The studio eventually agreed to release the film via the
other providers, and is currently available for a 24-hour rental, payable with
VISA, Mastercard,
American Express and Discover cards.
Sony was reportedly engaged in talks with YouTube and the
other VOD partners for several days, but those talks were delayed by
negotiations over financial terms and speculation over whether streaming the
film will leave streaming partners vulnerable to cyber attacks.
Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton hinted
at negotiations in a statement on Tuesday about the decision to release the
film in a limited capacity. “We are continuing our efforts to secure more
platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible
audience,” he said.
You can now stream The Interview for $5.99, or
purchase it for $14.99.
