Mandy,
Here is my candidate for local Hero:
Sam Sewell is a modest Renaissance man who has lived for nearly three decades in North Naples. He is a psychotherapist and counselor. He is an active officer of SW Florida Mensa, and has served as their gifted child coordinator for many years. His insightful work with challenging teens is evidenced by the many young people he has helped to secure successful lives.
Sam facilitates discussion groups which discuss everything from Ansel Adams to Zen Buddhism. He does free seminars on Marriage and Family issues. His award winning research on Family Issues is published in several languages.
Sam is also an ordained Minister, teaching Comparative World Religions and Biblical History. He is on the board of his area ministerial association, and serves on the Adjunct Faculty for the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Naples Community Hospital.
Sam has done many personal appearances and radio and TV interviews for his newly released book, “I Fired My Doctors and Saved My Life.” Diagnosed with incurable heart disease and needing a heart transplant three years ago, he has made a remarkable health turnaround and has been an inspirational example to thousands!
He walks four miles a day and eats a most commendably healthy diet! He also now does Health and Fitness Coaching and Nutritional Counseling
Sam is an avid reader and is very well informed on a variety of topics. His interests range from Philosophy, Psychology, Science, Religion, Literature, the Arts and just about anything else that makes it worth waking up in the morning.
Sam is an aviation enthusiast and also a Hot Rodder, with a trophy winning car.
Sam does organic gardening and operates an Organic Foods Co-op.
His gorgeous yard is a show stopper. People stop to photograph is home & floral gardens.
Sam is a former Navy pilot, and has a deep, ongoing commitment to the welfare of his country.
Sam hosts a weekly “Call the Shrink” internet talk radio program, and runs several websites & eight blogs, with thousands of daily hits. He is charismatic and compassionate, and always available to listen to friends, with a cheerful & upbeat attitude. He is lots of fun at parties! In addition to managing a busy life and being a loving husband to an unusually successful wife and partner, and an admired father to three grown children, Sam is also one of my best friends.
Sam is well worthy of being honored as our local hero because of the many, many things he does on a continual basis to impact the lives of everyone who knows or comes in contact with him. Although he doesn’t seek leadership, fame or honor, Sam lives to serve. Our community is a richer place because Sam walks among us!
Selwyn Mills Ph.D.
Congratulations Sam! Thank you for your many contributions to the betterment of all of our lives!
Many more years of good health & joy to you!
